  1. I'm surprised to hear that schools explicitly state that they require master's degree. To my knowledge a master's degree is not a requirement for most pubpol PhD's. People entering Pubpol PhD programs tend to have a few years of experience and some do have MPP's. However, it is not a requirement and I'm sure you can sell your research experience at the UN. I would say finding a Pubpol program with a strong focus on international development is the harder task since most pubpol programs focus more on domestic (social, health, urban) policies. If you want to focus on international policy issues I would suggest that you look into the affiliated faculties in poli sci or econ and check if they research on international development issues. KSG is obviously the best choice. WWS would be good as well. I don't think Chicago's Harris School focuses on international development isues. Michigan's Ford School would be OK too. Maryland has international stuff too, but I believe it's focused more on security issues. LBJ(Texas Austin) focuses more on social policy. Duke has a new program so I can't tell what it's going to be like but presently it does not have much faculty focused on international development. NYU's Wagner School is mostly social and urban. CMU's Heinz as well. I'm not sure of Syracuse's Maxwell School. RAND's program is strong on security and health but not much development issues. If you really are into development and are certain you don't want to do economics than you pool becomes much smaller. I haven't done this but you could look for Development Think Tanks and look where the people did there PhDs.
  2. Brown; urban, development & growth
  3. I have a question to those in grad school already. (1) How many people in your department receive no aid from the department during their 1st year? (2) Are there cases where students don't get assistantship(RA/TA) in the second year even if they successfully finish their first year self-funded?
  4. Well, I called Cornell's dept to ask what the possibilities of becoming admitted for those on the "not yet decided status". The guy told me that the bulk would be rejections. This was somewhat expected as there seems to be a lot of "yet decided" applicants here.
  5. asquare, great post! Wish I get the "opportunity" to bargain. By the way, just got rejected from the Ford School.
  6. It would be great if those who already have better offers than Cornell that you are certain about, send the dept a note asking them to terminate your application process. It could save many people's lives here. ^^

    Ksg?

I called the office and all decisions have been made. I'm out. Also, she said that there is no waitlist. Good luck!

    Ksg?

Congratulations commodore! You seem to be on a role. Which professor called you? and were there any info concerning other admits(like how many were admitted)?

    Ksg?

Congrats! what a great admit! What was the aid package like?

    Ksg?

commodore, out of curiosity would you prefer KSG over Yale?

    Ksg?

There's one post on the gradcafe with an acceptance to KSG's pub pol program via phone. Has anyone heard?

    Cornell?

I just got the same mail. "To date, no decision has been made concerning your application."

    Cornell?

When did you send the e-mail. I sent mine this morning but still haven't heard back. By the way, what was the e-mail that you used?
  14. Wow! totally awsome! Congrats! Which would you prefer GSB or Yale?
  15. I checked mine and nothing much yet. However, I applied to the joint econ and pubpol track. Considering the fact that the deadline was Feb 1, it seems quite early for an admission
  16. Congrats to everyone who got in! The graduate office says that Duke will be sending out admits/rejects throughout this week. Why can't they just send it out in one day! EconChump, your profile seems extremely strong. Maybe the committee thought you would just go somewhere else. Anyway, this waiting is causing insomnia.
  17. Congrats!! What are the financial offers like? Could you guys also pm your profiles(or post it here)?
  18. In general, what are the specs like for those who finish in 4 years and get a good academic job. Do they have one exceptional paper or do they have comparable research in terms of quality and quantity to those who finish in 5 years but just do it faster?
  19. Congrats on your admmissions to Duke Pubpol! I assume you applied to the econ track. When were you notified? One of my profs says if you'll be content at working in think tanks then Phd in Pubpol would be fine. If you want to get a job in PubPol schools Phd in Pubpol would be fine but would have to compete against people from various fields(Econ, Public Health, etc.). Obviously, if you want an academic job in the econ dept the a Phd in Pubpol won't take you there. There have been cases where KSG grads got jobs in econ depts but are very rare cases. Duke pubpol hired 2 assistant profs last year and both were econ grads(from MIT and Cornell). The department is in the process of hiring some more and those flying in our mostly sociology grads. So, in my opinion a PhD in pubpol doesn't have much of a merit in getting jobs in Pubpol schools as well.
  20. The site is mostly in Korean so it won't be much help. Just in case you still want the link: http://www.gohackers.com/html/move.htm?id=admission
  21. The posts seems to be true. I saw an admissance post on another(international) site. The guy had taken all threee core PhD sequence at Stanford as a MS.Stat student and got A's. Not surprising that he/she got in. I'm pretty much ready to cross out Princeton from my list now.
  22. It seems that JHU updated application status on the website a couple of days ago.
  23. Every step from my decision to study economics last year to applications has been indebted to this forum. It truly is the best source for aspiring economists.
