  1. I had to choose between UCB, NWU and NYU. I chose the first and I have no regrets sofar - actually I am pretty happy.
  2. So Chicago seems to offer a smaller stipend than Berkeley...that's surprising...
  3. Let me share something with you: a part from MIT and Harvard, conditional on being in a TOP 10 school - and we all know there are at least 12, maybe even 15 TOP 10 schools - it does not really matter where you go and it is just a matter of personal tastes, constraints and funding. Really, look at the placement in the last 10-12 years: All top schools other than Harvard and MIT can place only one student per year into a TOP 10/15 school... I am sure that every year, in the entering class of any TOP school there are several people with multiple TOP 10 offers and in the end where you end won't make too much difference...you'll have all the tools and the condition to do great research and, on expectation, you will have a worst placement than students at Harvard and MIT (on expectation).
  4. Are you counting only people who left because they accepted ab offer elsewhere or also people who temporarily left but are going to be back? For example, Christy Romer, Shapiro and Farrell are in Wasington DC or are going there. Also David Romer is DC. By the way, Michael Katz is coming back next year...
  5. Why do you count only two famous economists with that surname?? I really think there are at least three (or even four)...
  6. I think when people say TOP5 they usually refer to: MIT, Harvard, Princeton, Stanford and Chicago. You can either agree or disagree, but this is the common perception (I disagree for example). Also, I remember EconPhd.net speaking about the "Magic 7" or the "Big 7" : the 5 above plus Berkeley and Yale. Again, this could be considered unfair since one would include NW or maybe NYU or UMI. Nonetheless, at some point you should stop adding schools. My personal idea is that, except for Harvard and MIT, all the other TOP 10 are really really similar in terms of faculty, placement, reputation and the like. Finally, for the sake of the trade I would stick witht the "Big 7" group that is also what the OP started with.
  7. And you still haven't seen this year's skit party videos....they are hilarious. I will post a link later on....
  8. Yeah, me too... Let me know if you want to meet with other TMers...
  9. Given the fact that Harvard is Harvard and everybody would like to go there...since you are comparing Harvard to Stanford and Princeton, at that point you should compare it also to Berkeley and NYU (expecially if you like behavioral...)
  10. BIG BIG CONGRATULATIONS! Visible, now you can be happy and also a bit more relaxed. PS: I knew it, and I told ya
  11. That's true. But Berkeley it's much closer to San Francisco. Also, Berkeley has a very live and active cultural/political environment - if you care - whereas people told me that in Stanford there is nothing but the campus - I also heard their campus is so big that you would need a car in order to go to one place from another still inside the campus!
  12. This year is 63 offers (I do not know the details about how many of them come with funding). I will let you know for the skits!!!
  13. Last year Berkeley sent out 52/55 admissions. But I do not know how funding differs among those. And also I do not even know if there is a wait-list
  14. Buddy you should be more careful about who is leaving, where and when. Saez 's first employment was as assistant Professor at Harvard; and after two years he moved here, so.... Berkeley is a great place to study and to live...
  15. That's definetely true for Berkeley and Stanford. I think Yale makes even more offers. Nonetheless I would have expected for Princeton a ratio offer/entering class size much closer to those of MIT and Harvard than to those of Berkeley, Stanford or Yale.
  16. Hei hei hei, thanks a lot! Anyway, yes this year was probably the worst one (even though the Romers are on leave, they have not gone to some other university). Since Berkeley had been able to keep its own stars until this year (which I repeat was kinda strange) and since this year was the worst one in terms of losses, I am pretty confident that the storm is gone. The only field in which we are obviously down is macro (and that's why we should have a couple of hires there this year). If you want to do history, Berkeley is a great place to be (Delong, Eichengreen and DeVries). You also mentioned Behavioral...well there is no place better than Berkeley for that (Rabin, Della Vigna, etc...). I am not interested in International but some of my friends are and they are pretty happy with faculties in that field. Also, I do not think Miguel is considering leaving at all. Finally, Berkeley in past years has distinguished itself for really good and smart picks from the job-market for assistant professors...
  17. 60 seems too much for Princeton to me. Nonetheless, I have to say that I know of (relatively) many people who chose, last year, Stanford or MIT or Berkeley (4 in my class) over Princeton. I know it could sound a bit strange, but I guess Princeton position is kinda akward: they admit many of the same people who get into Harvard/MIT and of course many of them will go for Cambridge MA. On the other hand, if yo have an offer from Stanford, Chicago or Berkeley it can make sense to prefer the latters over Princeton...maybe because of the location... Just my 2 cents...
  18. Congrats to all! If you need any further information about living/studying/drinking in Berkeley let me know... Hope to see you at flyouts!
  19. I think they are done. I have two friends of mine, one admitted and the other waitlisted....so...
  20. I also think so. I think they more look for "the kind of guys who well fit our program atmposhere or phylosophy" instead of just "the best guys". Good luck to all!!!!
