  1. hello Kirtanasarin and all, Thanks for your advice and thanks for sending me the document. I've tried to improve it by reclassifying it, split it to 2 different word doc and added a few of my own problems. -- to anyone who needs it! available in beatthegmat: Tough math problems + permutations/combinations
  2. shottayardie: sorry i didn't manage to reply you in time. I hope you get what you've expected.. and more! for Math problems you can check out the tough math problems that I've received from Kirtanasarin on Test Magic [ http://www.www.urch.com/forums/just-finished-my-gmat/87585-500-640-q45-v34-notes.html ] I've also reclassified, split them up to 2 different word doc and added a few of my own problems. available in beatthegmat: Tough math problems + permutations/combinations Hope someone will find it useful!
  3. Thanks so much! and thanks to everyone who has read this.. i got my AWA score and i scored 6! yay!
  4. Hellos I am posting my Sentence Construction notes here! My SC notes for GMAT I don't have fantastic verbal grades but i do think the my notes will be beneficial anyone who would like to have a basic but comprehensive understanding on the topic. I have compiled this from ManhattanGmat SC book, PR, Kaplan, spidey's notes from TM, beatthegmat notes, Sahil's grammar notes which I found online and other random useful notes I read on TM and elsewhere. I must have spent more than 20 hours collating and understanding it! Its not perfect - so please feel free to improve it and pass it around! - its in a word doc to enable you to do so.
  5. Dear all, I just did my gmat today. I did alright - not super fantastic compared to the rest. I wouldn't say I'm very happy, but I definitely am very relieved in not seeing 580 :) This score should be good enough for the school that I'm applying for - hopefully its still not too late to apply that is! I just have a couple of comments/ thoughts about the gmat experience and the studying process. I won't really comment on the studying method because I don't think my results are superior enough to do so. The Experience 1. I didn't finish the 37th question of the math section and I was quite upset! 2. When I went back in for the verbal section, I realised that the so-called noteboard was a different from the math section. The math was the 5 noteboards mentioned in the mba website. But for the verbal, it was just a piece of noteboard! This noteboard was slightly bigger than the A4 size I received before. I was thrown away because I scheduled my timing by the no of questions I did on one page. Because of this, I quite screwed up my timing and worked too quickly passed the middle section. By the last 10 questions, I must have almost 30 mins left! :S I jst had to compensate by working slowly and correctly in the last 10... I'm not sure if the different type of noteboards used are stated on gmat official website because I remembered specifically checking the number of pages on the website before I decided on the planning. So what a downer! The studying 1. I spent 6 weeks studying full time, during which I went away for 10 days. - This is SO not good for your studying. I went away because my boyfriend was going out of town to work. So i thought I'd follow him there and stay home to study while he's at work. That didn't really work out well because I had to adjust to the timing difference and I fell ill in the process. 2. I primarily followed beatthegmat's method of studying (Beat The GMAT!). It seemed that I was on track but when I took the first gmat mock on PR, I scored a 500. I was deeply upset. The worse part was when it didn't improve through the weeks or only marginally. I was consistently scoring 500+ on pr and 500+ on kaplan. I think I probably only really "improved" when I started becoming more active on TM. I did the questions that were in the forums and posted questions I didn't know. And that was only in the last 2 weeks before the actual exam. 3. In the last week, I was still scoring results that made me worried. I scored 600 on the first gmat prep and 670 on the second gmat prep 4 days later - what a huge difference. I just figured I'll do my best and be as confident as I can. I would probably have done better the next time round. But I'm not going to do so. So here goes the... Things that I would have done differently 1. not go on a trip - so bad 2. start using TM earlier. I had only used it to look for inspirations - only in the last week I used them to practise questions. I think its a very good way to improve because the questions that people post are normally slightly more difficult. It'll give you good practice and expose you to different methods of solving more quickly. 3. Search more effectively on TM. If you know people who pose difficult questions or give fabulous explanations, search for them! I searched for 800Bob whose explanations helped me a lot in the verbal section. I would have spent more time searching but I didn't have a lot of time to do a lot of things! Thanks Lastly, I'd like to give thanks to 800Bob for being a god that he is![clap] and others who have helped me in my last ditch attempt by answering my questions like california. Notes I am also posting my Sentence Construction notes here. 6. I don't have the document either. I presume above are the questions and possible explanations
  7. Ca, thanks for your explanation! Does it work for even number of integers with an even multiple? eg series of sets are consecutive multiples of 4 I presume not because the median number has to be "averaged" with the numbers beside it Mannu08, this is an example - hopefully it clarifies if assume that m = 5 and the series of numbers are consecutive multiples of 3, and 33 is the median, the series of numbers will be 27 30 33 36 39 The average will be (27+30+33+36+39)/5 = 33 If you were to assume that m = 5, the average will still be 33
  8. Ca, yes definitely! and thanks lots!
  9. "this vaccine was the source of this virus found in mesotheliomas" --> the SV40 virus is in mesotheliomas, and the source of SV40 is from the vaccine. So from the researchers' point of view, does the virus cause meostheliomas cancer? if it does, doesn't E says that the virus does not cause mesotheliomas because there isn't such virus in the sample? I don't seem to get it...
  10. Would like to bring attention to this thread. Does anyone know if "as a result of" is the correct idiom? And Legolife says - "determined" and "as a result of" are redundant. Anyone knows why??
  11. 2001 proved to be the automaker's first losing year since 1992, when the company had lost $7.4b, which was primarily because of almost $7 billion in accounting charges. a. when the company had lost $7.4billion, which was primarily because of b. when the company had lost $7.4 billion, primarily resulting from c. when the company lost $7.4 billion, primarily because of d. which is when the company lost $7.4 billion, and that was primarily because of e. which is when the company lost $7.4 billion, primarily resulting from Ans C Please explain!!
  12. i don't get this, the ans seems to weaken than support. what am i missing? Although exposure to asbestos is the primary cause of mesothelioma, a slow-developing cancer, researchers believe that infection by the SV40 virus, since in the United States 60% of tissue samples from mesotheliomas, but none from healthy tissue, contain SV40. SV40 is a monkey virus; however, in 1960 some polio vaccine was contaminated with the virus. Researchers hypothesize that this vaccine was the source of this virus found in mesotheliomas decades later. Which of the following, if true, most strongly supports the researchers' hypothesis? a. SV40 is widely used as a research tool ini cancer laboratories. b. changes in the technique of manufacturing the vaccine now prevent contamination with SV40. c. recently discovered samples of the vaccine dating from 1960 still show traces of the virus. d. In a small percentage of cases of mesothelioma, there is no history of exposure to asbestos. e. In Finland, where the polio vaccine was never contaminated, samples from mesotheliomas do not contain SV40. OA: E
  13. If m is a positive odd integer, what is the average of a certain set of m integers? 1. The integers in the set are consecutive multiples of 3 2. The median of the set of integers is 33. Why is the answer C? median doesn't tell us how many numbers are there in total, which we need to find out to know what is m and the sum of m.
  14. mannu08, i don't understand what you mean by this: if stmt 1 gives ans no and yes ans 2 gives no, then true answer will be D If statement 1 gives yes and no, doesn't that mean that it is insufficient?
  15. Just to re-confirm, for all non negative x and y, x > y is true when x^2 > y^2, and vice versa?
  16. can i safely assume that for questions of this nature we can always use (1) - (2) if the difference is always what the question is asking?? as per these 2 examples?
  17. guess i answered my own question!! :) for those who are interested, please see a similar explanation in the thread here http://www.www.urch.com/forums/gmat-sentence-correction/38515-she-runs-faster-than.html
  18. 3. interior of a circle is inscribed in a rectange of side 10 and 8 cms. what is the area of the greatest possible circle ? We are restricted by the smaller of the two sides, so diameter is 8, which means area is 16pi. Can someone explain how this explanation is arrived? Or does any one else have a different solution? I somehow thought that the diameter is greater than 10 since the rectangle is inscribed in the circle, and the lengths 10 or 8 should be chords of the circle and hence smaller than the diameter. any thoughts?
  19. Hi I'm very very confused whether the words does or have come before or after the noun. See the examples.. French wines taste better than Australian wines do. - correct French wines taste better than do Australian wines - correct Are the following correct? Please also explain 1. France has more good wine than does Australia 2. France has more good wine than Australia does 3. France has more good wine than does any other country 4. France has more good wine than any other country does 5. France has more good wine than Australia have Under what circumstances are the "have /does" put behind or in front the noun? can someone please clarify the rule? Thankss!
  20. I think if it was C, then it should have been "have contacted with..." contact no longer becomes a noun
  21. how coincidental - well not very since its the first question in OG! - i wrote the same one. lets compare: This argument is fundamentally flawed and will probably send a negative signal to the investors because it shows the incompetence of the company in presenting clear facts. First, the example that was given did not clarify its objective, which is to show how the company is efficient. It is unclear whether the price or the time taken to process has fallen. This is crucial in identifying whether the efficiency refers to the ability to reduce the cost or reduce the time taken. For all we know, costs might actually have increased if the film processing continues to require a five-day and the total cost is $1. Secondly, it is not logical to use the example given as it does not relate to the industry that is in. While the efficiency may have improved in one industry, it may not have improved in another industry. The efficiency of an industry often depends on the stage it is at in the industry cycle curve. Definitely an infant industry like nanotechnology cannot be compared to film processing technology which is at its declining stage. It is well known fact that past results are not an indication of future performance. The conclusion that experience will enable them to “minimise cost and thus maximise profits” are unwarranted. If the long experience were positive experience that had provided them with good financial results, it is not indicative that they would be able to replicate their success. This is because there are many external factors beyond the company's control that will affect the bottom line of a company such as the increase in costs of oil which in turn cost the freight to increase. The report can be made better if another example relating to its line of business is used and the reference of long experience is eliminated
  22. The answer should be E. Researchers are using computer images ... and (are) developing programs We are definitely not saying that the surgeons are the ones who are developing the programs. At first i chose C too but after reading pgarg00's comments, i realised I overlooked the meaning of the sentence. Always remember to read for meaning !
