  1. I use papers to organize all of my academic papers. It's pretty much a nerdier version of iTunes and has an awesome companion ipad/iphone app. It allows for you to auto-import a lot of a paper's metadata like author, title abstract. It's far superior to having random pdf's all over your computer. It's only for mac though. When I'm studying for a class, I start by rewriting my notes entirely. Then from the rewritten notes, I make a "cheat sheet" which I try to fit on one page of computer paper. I write as small as possible and try to get as much (organized) information on that paper as I can. I try to pretend that I can take that paper into the exam (which I don't btw :)) so I would want to put as much information on it as possible, while still being able to find/use the thing. It usually takes me about 5 hours to make a sheet (i write pretty small). I think this method works well a few days before the test, so you have a little while to digest the material, but that it's still fresh in your head. @ilikefreefood, If your department has a newer copier machine it might have the ability to scan documents and email them to you as a pdf from the machine. I've been doing that with my notes this semester and it's saved me a lot of time.
  2. I'd love a free shirt. Plus I could rep it year round in arizona.
  3. here is what you NEED. ability to read and understand the language/logic of mathematics, multivariate calc, linear algebra. However the ability to read and understand the language/logic of math is really fostered by taking some serious proof based math classes. but they are not needed at all. It just might take a little more elbow grease for you to get through your first year. I think it's often overlooked on this forum that math camp exists to help everyone get on the same page (mathematically speaking). So if you are a little worried about your math ability, make sure you go to math camp and take it seriously. There are accounting/finance PhDs in my first year courses, who are survivng only because they took our math camp with us and none of them ever took topology or anything else like that, it's just a little more work for them. P.S. I know its a stats course, and it's also not needed, but take probability and your life will be much easier. I promise.
  4. Someone told me that R and Matlab have virtually the same coding, is that true? I've been using R for a while and have never even opened matlab.
  5. I took a few practice tests and read through the quant practice questions. I really should have spent more time. I did not study at all for the Verbal or the Analytical sections as not much weight is placed upon them. Q: 770 V:570 verbal A: 4.5
  6. http://unicast.org/enclosures/life-econ-crop.pdf This should help clear things up.
  7. Don't worry. unless you want to go top ten, you will be fine.
  8. Economists as well as finance professors face higher opportunity costs. 100k at a university v 250k being an economist for goldman sachs. Also maybe the argument could be made that since economists (as a profession) are more aware of things like opportunity cost, maybe econ profs are better negotiators of salary terms.
  9. Ours counts as a fall course and we receive a grade. Which means it would be a terrible idea to skip.
  10. I visited a few schools at significant (well, relative to how little money I have it's significant) personal expense. They all told me that they would reimburse me for my expenses as long as I provided receipts, etc. I sent all these requests back to them promptly. (Second week in March, first week in April and third week in April, respectively) How long should it take for them to send a check to me? I don't want to be a bother, but being paid back roughly $1000 between three schools would really ease some financial anxiety. So how long is a normal turn around time?
  11. That has to be the case because they are giving less money to this year's incoming class in order to make sure that they have funding for the current first years.
  12. Syracuse has always been slightly sketchy about telling people about their placements. http://web.archive.org/web/20080519145305/http://www.maxwell.syr.edu/econ/doctoral/job_placements.htm That's a link using archive.org from 2008. I really don't like how they refuse to itemize who was placed where each year. I think this aggregate way is BS.
  13. It wouldn't let me edit my old post to put in new information, would an admin please delete my old one, it's on the forth page. Thanks Type of Undergrad: B.S. Quantitative Economics. & B.A. Political Science Undergrad GPA: 3.34 GRE: 770Q 570V 4.5 AWA Math Courses: Calc I-III, (AP, AP, A) Linear Algebra (A), Real Analysis (D), Probability (B+) Econ Courses: Intro Micro ©, Intro Macro ©, Elementary Econometrics (A), Econometrics (A), Advanced Econometrics (A), Intermediate Micro (A+), Intermediate Macro(A+), Economic Growth (A), Economic Development (B+), Environmental Economics (B+), International Monetary Policy (A) Grad Courses: Advanced Micro (A), Advanced Macro (A-) Letters of Recommendation: All very good, from top 10. Research Experience: Work at a public policy think tank. Thesis in Political Science. Research Interests: Applied micro, development Statement of purpose: Way better than average Other: LORs are the most vital part of your application. Do not overlook the importance of building quality relationships with a few profs. However don't use this as an excuse to be a kissa$$. RESULTS: (Attending: Arizona) PhD Accepts: Arizona (tuition waiver and assistantship for years 2-5), Purdue (no $), Colorado-Boulder (waitlisted for $), PhD Waitlists: Boston College (Decent Chance of admit, but won't know until after deadlines for other schools), OSU (acceptance not probable); both withdrawn PhD Rejections: Duke, Maryland, Penn State, Vanderbilt and Indiana, Masters Accepts: Michigan, Boston University, Toronto, UBC Masters Rejections: Tufts (really?) What would you have done differently? The most glaring thing would be not to have gotten a D in real analysis, I think I could have pulled vanderbilt without that. Other than that I think I had a pretty solid plan. Take the most useful classes you can, do as well as you can and spend your free time having fun. I think people on TM get too worked up about not having an 800Q or a 4.0 at the expense of living life.
