  1. Hi everyone, It happens that one prepares very well; but on the test day, when it matters the most, anxiety and fear can be detrimental:crazy::confused:. So, can we have this thread devoted to Dos and Donts 3-4 days before the exam. We can have some words of motivation and some of caution As far as my case is concerned, I will be giving GRE on 19th. I have prepared a little of verbal and analytical sections and would go through my own wordlist in remaining days. But I am more afraid of making silly mistakes in quant, since I cant afford to loose any score in my strong section. Also, since this will be my first computer-based exam I don't know how I will be able to maintain my composure in a :(4-hr long exam.

  3. I feel more comfortable with RCs as it needs more comprehension than vocab and my vocab is weak. I thought newer version wont reuire much vocab; but even in new GRE sentence equivalence are completely vocab based and so are text completion to some extent. SO due to more accuracy I try to complete RCs if there is time shortage. To save time I always read question(not answer options) before; so that I can skip unwanted words while reading passage..............Inexperienced advice (adapt at your will) Also 2 queries for experienced (who have already appeared for New GRE) 1) By any chance is there an option for 'find' in the ets test software? 2) Is any passage so big that we have to scroll to read it?
  4. I have completed my undergraduate studies from India and want to apply for MS in US. I had English as the language of instruction in all the educational institutes I have attended till my undergraduate. Can anyone clarify whether education from english medium institute is sufficient as English Proficiency requirement. Do I need to give TOEFL in addition? I am specifically interested in applying to Caltech, Berkeley, Stanford, UCLA, EPFL The institute admission page mentions exception to TOEFL for students with English as first/native language. In my case Hindi is the native language, but English is first language of instruction
  5. did you needed calculator for any questions? I think it might be more time consuming and confusing to type/click in calculator as compared to paper work
  6. CRITICS welcomed to reply to this post People who make decisions based on emotion and justify those decisions with logic afterwards are poor decision makers. Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the statement and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, you should consider ways in which the statement might or might not hold true and explain how these considerations shape your position. MY RESPONSE Before analyzing the statement, it is necessary to first clarify what does the term "poor decision makers" signify. Does it refer to act of arriving at decision or does it refer to outcome of decision. Agree that one may argue that decision arrived at due to emotional biases may not be always reliable; but that doesn't mean that their outcomes are bound to be wrong. If person makes a decision just because it feels for it then we can question his decision making capability. But if he is able to justify for it with proper logic consideration then we can't term him as poor decision maker. Infact most of the innovative theories made by great scientists were just intuitions or dreams which are forms of emotional feeling. Take the case of Einstein, who discovered the famous theroy of relativity. He was just watching a fast train and found some distortion in it's shape. And from that experience he felt that whenever body moves at high speeds there is change in their physical dimension. Now he just felt for it without any scientific background and it was only after lot of research he came up with laws of theory of relativity. Agree that his proposition of theory without proof would have been mocked at; but since he has proven it mathematically and with experiments we salute his decision. There are also some counter examples where wrong decision have been made due to emotional prejudices. Religious sentiments are the most visible of them. Some people follow some blind faiths just because of some religious following. Now their decision is flawed not because they are sensitive; but because they don't think about the religious preaching logically. Some adverse people utilise their blind-following to obscure them of the real meaning of preachings. As is the case with me some decision like going for higher studies are motivated by emotion to excel. But before actually doing them I do analyse the pros and cons of my decision like what will knowledge gain by higher studies compared to practical experience by worjing in industry. So to summarise, decision made without any logically background is poor; but
  7. The questions are in the book which I ordered from flipkart. No, e-copy available
  8. As we all know revised GRE is starting coming August. Everyone is anxious of new pattern and searching for appropriate material. Most of the publisher have already released their books for revised GRE. But before purchasing them, it would be better to know which one is worth how much and targeted to which section (verbal/math/ACRO). So, everyone is requested to post review of the books they are using. Since some might give GRE in August; also mention whether your views on book are pre-exam our post-exam. I have just bought the 'The Official Guide to Revised General Test by ETS'. Most of the theory material in the book is available as free download on ets website. Only the problem sets are additional. There are 6 sets of verbal (2 each from easy, medium, hard level) giving around 60 verbal questions. There are 3 sets of quant giving 45 questions and 1 set of 10 questions on data interpretation. It also has full-length PBT which is not on ets site. So we have around 200 questions total each with detailed explanation of answers. It has one full-length test in CD which I guess is same as (I have reserved it for end and hence don't know what's inside)
  9. Hi pdc, thanks for invitation for study group. I prefer gtalk compared to skype due to connection problems. I am online from 4pm GMT to 7pm GMT (for reference check this post is being sent at 4.30pm GMT). If you are ok with timing and gtalk usage PM me with gmail id. Also few clarifications; (1)I hope you are giving exam around mid september so that we move with similar pace. (2) I feel confident with quant and would study it only at end. I will utilize majority of my time for verbal(60%) and AW(25%)
  10. Hi everyone Just joined. Had tried to post twice on this thread. Don't know whether moderator disapproved them. Hope this one gets posted I will be giving my gre exam on 19 sept and need study group for discussion From this thread I can see 4-5 persons giving gre in early august. Please post your experience on revised gre. Also there are lot of others appearing in late august / early september. Have you made any study groups?
  11. except for academic discussion, I don't use English as language of communication
  12. From official guide page 56 Problem set-2:RC(easy) of verbal section q-1) A person who agrees to serve as mediator between two warring factions at the request of both abandons by so agreeing the right to take sides later. To take sides at later point would be to suggest that the earlier presumptive impartiality was a sham What does the passage emphasizes about mediator When I try to read first sentence I get a feeling that it is not constructed properly. Can anyone break the sentence in smaller parts? Especially clarify the usage "by so" I gave it a try myself [clap];) A person (who...abandons)2 (by...later)3 In this part-1 is adj type describing the person, part-3 is something like secondary act signified by 'ing' verb. I think it should be followed by main action word. Would also like to hear questions/answers from others preparing from ETS official material as I will be following it. [can anyone correct this last sentence for punctuation marks. I think there should be some break marks after 'others' and 'material']
  13. @AjaYrUlEz you seem to have the vastest material compared to any other person appearing for revised gre:tup: will u be able complete all of them till September By the way i am also giving exam in September and need a group for studying for the same. Any urch member group for August/September appearing students?
  14. @AjaYrUlEz you seem to have the vastest collection of books compared to anyone other giving the revised gre  By the way I am also have scheduled the exam on 19 sept and looking for group study. any group on urch for sept appearers?
  15. I think december is too late. If I am not wrong Dec 1 is date you can expect score; ets somewhere warns it might need around 2 weeks to forward scores to universities. So take a decision accordingly. Also visit the websites of each universities for admission schedules. Some top US universities I checked have deadline in mid-december. And I feel waiting till deadline might decreases chances of selection as shortlisting starts as soon as procedure begins in september. So, early bird gives first impression. And to overshadow him you can't be just equal to him but need to be better than him. So unless you are hardly pressed to postpone GRE, don't risk it.
