  1. Hi amigo, Thanks for your comments. I'll make it a point to be more careful about spelling and grammer. yeah, your right about reference about "primordial times" being unnecessary, considering that i haven't substantiated it. shilpa
  2. Hi fish,i didn't get the reasoning by which you arrived at '5 ppl like exactly 2 products',i arrived at final answer of 5,too....
  3. Answer 's gotto be 1/2. the Q claims "atleast" one of his kids is a girl p(E)=(number of outcomes involving the occurence E=1)/ (total number of possible outcome = 2)
  4. Hi all, Conclusion of this essay is weak[xx(], i always run out of things to write by the time i reach the conclusion. Erin/Sri/Amigo/any-other-helpful-souls out there, plz give some pointers as to how to improve it, and rate the essay:) shilpa 033. Creating an appealing image has become more important in contemporary society than is the reality or truth behind that image. Facade of beatitude is what man tries to achieve, this obsession with portraying an appealing image in effort to enthrall others is not limited to contemporary society but, has been prevalent since primordial times, it arises from the basic need of the human being to be appreciated and even envied by his peers. Only children who are very young have guileless innocence ,they reveal their true emotions and feeling. They are not hesitant about voicing their discomfort or, crying out when in pain. As the child grows he becomes more attuned to the world around him , about the impact his behavior and words are having on those around him. The need for acknowledgement and appreciation makes the him modulate his actions to what he things will be favorable. People, in general, are more conscious about the opinion the society has about them, than what they personally feel. Society, seems to prefer the facade than voice of real person behind it. Consider for example, Jimmy Carter's election campaign. He was very popular during most of his campaign, and public opinion polls showed him to be leading his contender Henry Ford by 39 percent. In one interview with Playboy magazine he mentioned that he does have promiscuous thoughts and had “committed adultery in his mind“. There was wide outcry about these words and his popularity plunged remarkably. Although, Jimmy Carter did win the presidency by a narrow margin, the outcry against his words shows that society prefers words and actions which are considered acceptable, rather than words that really convey the honest opinions or thoughts. Though politics is the most prominent arena where individuals imposture as perfect human being with impeccable lives, it is prevalent in every part of human society. In colleges and high school , students make an effort to follow the excepted trends and fashions in order to create an appealing image, many try to masquerade the image of being “cool” in order to be part of exclusive clique of students, who fancy the thought that, their social standing is coveted by others. In conclusion, the incessant need to be appreciated and admired makes a person create an appealing image, and, Society, ostensibly, seems to be more interested in the way a person portrays himself than what he really is.
  5. Hi all, I could not come up with substantial examples for this essay[:(!], any pointers will be of great help:cool:.[sir, Amigo, if you guys see this post, plz do rate it] shilpa "Many problems of modern society cannot be solved by laws and the legal system because moral behavior cannot be legislated." Society has tried to solve problems and maintain order, since primordial times using laws. Every tribe or community had laws which required strict adherence. Nevertheless, history offers plethora for evidence to suggest that problems which stem from fundamental nature of man, cannot be solved with legal system. During the middle ages many attempts were made to solve the problems like adultery, etc. using legislation in attempt to maintain the cohesion of the families. These laws which dictate on the moral behavior have always been circumvented and never really effective as laws cannot really control man's personal thoughts and actions. The failure of Prohibition: enforcement of legislation against alcohol consumption, is another example where legal system where not able to enforce morality. Most of the modern day problems arise from dissolution of families- because of high rate of divorces, teenage pregnancies, drug use, etc. Legal system cannot enforce laws which can prevent breaking up of the families as that would be coercion, making people remain in unhappy marriages. Psychologists claim that children from broken homes are usually scathed by the experience and are more likely to drop out of school and get themselves into trouble with the law. Another major problem of today is teenage pregnancy. Children who are too young to take care of themselves end up becoming responsible for someone else. This results in students dropping out of school to take care of their kids. Lack of education makes them eligible only for minimum wage jobs. These mothers are not equipped or matured enough to bring up their children in the right way. Students can be made aware of merits of abstinence but this is something that cannot be imposed by the law. Promiscuous life style also results in spread of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. Decadence of the modern society is not something that can be solved by legal system but by introspective look into these problems and change in the outlook of the society . In conclusion, modern day problems cannot be solved with legislations as morality cannot be enforced. Society should try to solve these problems through education and by increasing the awareness of these problems.

  9. Hi Gautam, I liked you essay because of the fact that you have highlighted both positive and negative aspects of the issue. I'm of the opinion that some of the topics require ambivalence, as they cannot be dealt with extremes[thts unless TOEFL demands it, I have just started with TOEFL preparation today so i haven't read about exactly how they are supposed to be].
  10. Hi all, These are my thoughts on the issue, I wrote it within 35 minutes and i think i have been repetitive, as i couldn't think of many examples to support my stand. any pointers on other faults with essay will be of immense help. shilpa Compulsory attendence enforces discipline and certain amount of commitment in students,Inspite of compulsory attendance having its merits it should not be imposed on college students as college education is persued by adults capable of determining their own future and they should not be coerced into attending the classes . Unlike schools which require tough rules about attendence to make sure that recalcitrant students are not cutting classes therby falling behind in their grades, college teaches adults who are supposed to matured enough to realise that cutting classes will affect not only their grades but their entire future. College educates students trying to master specialized skills which requires not only keen interest in the subject but also certain level of commitment which cannot be forced upon. A student who attends classes only for the sake of attendence is not in any advantage over student who has missed the class. Many college students work part time, so there might be times when they would not be able to make to class on time. They should be penalized for it as long as they make up for the lost lecture and they don't make habit out it. Students should realize that part time work is just a means to reach the end, which is the education. While educators argue that some students once they join the university lose focus and start partying too much, it must be acknowledged that these students even if forced to stay in the classroom would not learn much as being physically present is not the same as being involved in the ongoing topic of discussion. Such students will learn from their foibles when they perform badly in examination and mend their ways. University education is not only aimed at teaching students about certain field but it also prepares students to face life, and one of the first things it teaches is that every person is responsible for him/herself. In conclusion, I believe that forcing students to attend classes is futile endeavor as learning is only possible if the student is dedicated, commited and interested in the class. Since the college students should be matured enough to realise the impact missing classes will have on their education, they should be let to make their own mistakes and learn from them.

  15. Hi everybodyl, Here's my opinion on the same topic, any comments will be of immense help. shilpa ----------------------------------------------------------------- Every person is a complex individual, since populace is formed by such diverse, heterogeneous group it is impossible to generalize on what determines their attitude. Personality of an individual is shaped by both nature and nurture. Greater influence of innate characteristics over the upbringing or vice versa has been topic of contention between psychiatrists, philosophers and biologists involved in study of human genome, without reaching definite conclusion. Various studies have been carried out on characteristics of identical (mono-zygotic) twins , often arriving at contradictory conclusions. Dr Robert Winston conducted a study to highlighting importance of nature in moldings personalities .In his documentary identical twins brought up in disparate environment followed similar courses. one interesting example was of pair of twins who shared love for reading, one twin was raised in affluent neighborhood and had access to personal library, his identical twin who was raised by impoverished parents spent hours in public library. Another study conducted by Northwestern University on identical twins arrived at conclusion that environmental factors contribute to who we are as individuals, this research concluded that attitudes are shaped by different environmental factors including nourishment the embryo received in the womb, values imparted by parents, education and social circle. People with the same kind upbringing brought up in similar neighborhood need not necessarily have same attitude or outlook towards life . Innate characteristics and abilities do play a role in determining a person's attitude. Genetic make up of an individual influences the behavioral pattern. A person with inherently high intelligence quotient might develop a sense of confidence, while a person of low intelligence might have low self esteem which he might try to compensate by becoming overtly assertive and domineering. A Person might not react in identical manner to the situation if it is faced by it at two different stages of life. Person's attitude or character is in continual stage of evolution based on the past experience and how he or she is able to deal with it. Genes impart certain potential and characteristics, manifestation of which is determined by upbringing and social environment. Hence both nature and nurture have strong influence of individual psyche.
