  1. Is Booth Business Econ going to send more acceptances or are they done ?
  2. I received an offer from UChicago, haven't heard from Cornell till now.
  3. Is the course being offered this year?? Currently there is a self paced version available on : https://catalog.rice.edu/browse/online/courses/17-math-camp Is this any different from the last year course in terms of Certificate given and Final Test ?
  4. Trying to decide between taking up an RA stint or going for a Masters at Indian Statistical Institute(most of the successful Indian candidates graduate from there). RA stints under profs are difficult to get in India and finances prohibit me to seek them abroad. Therefore applying to J-Pal India and other Economic Research Think tanks. At this point it's crucial for me to diagnose the problem in my application. It could be the obvious one(as you pointed out) i.e. a lack of research experience or it could be that adcoms don't look favorably upon MBA econ courses as prep for PhD level economics or both. Trying to resolve that issue by discussing with my letter writers and then I shall be able to make a more informed decision. P.S. Is work ex looked down upon even if you are a recent graduate? I worked for a couple of years before joining IIM Calcutta
  5. Same here, except for the fact that I have 0 offers and 5r + 5ir. Shall try my luck next year !!!
  6. What could other ways be except for coursework on transcript ?
  7. Hi guys, I have self studied most of advanced math(Real Analysis, Measure Theory) but I don't have courses to show for it. Therefore, I was wondering whether getting a good score in Math GRE could be used as a signal for mathematical knowledge.
  8. Would be grateful for any form of guidance guys!
  9. Hi guys, I am an Indian Student.I applied this year and the scoreline till today is 0a/0w/2r(+5 implicit rejects)3p. Got a reject from Penn State today and an implicit one from UVA. BU,NYU and Maryland are the ones remaining but I am not too hopeful.Anyways I have to make some important decisions regarding my career in the next few days and therefore this seemingly premature "advice needed" post. My profile is Type of undergraduate: IIT Roorkee(majored in Chemical Engineering) Graduate: IIM Calcutta(MBA) GPA: 7.8/9 ( Rank 20 in a class of 460) ( 8.44/9 in Econ and Maths) GRE: Q 170 V 163 AWA 4.5 TOEFL - 113 ( R 30, L 29, S 26, W 28) Math courses: Cal I-II (UG) A+( Covering Differential equation, Vector Calculus, Fourier Transforms etc) Numerical analysis UG B+ , Statistics Grad A- , Optimization, Real Analysis ( Self Studied using Rudin as reference), Operations Research A+, Dynamic Systems UG B Econ courses: Micro A- , Macro A , Intermediate Macro A+ , Behavioral Econ A+, Econometrics A+, Labour economics A, Game Theory A+, Eco Dev A Research Experience: None Published; did some as part of coursework in grad( Intergenerational Education Mobility) Term Papers on Monetary Policy and Development Economics Work Ex: Programming background, worked for a couple of years for a Tech firm TA: None Recommendation: One from Game Theory professor graduated from Princeton, one from Macro Prof from U Minnesota, and one from Eco Dev prof graduated from JNU (India). All three teach at IIMC Interest: Dev Eco , Game Theory Applied to: Michigan, Minnesota, Columbia , BU, Maryland, Virginia, Cornell, PSU, NYU, Northwestern The obvious gap in my profile is lack of Research Experience. But I wanted to confirm whether is that it or is there something else that the adcoms look for which I lack. RA opportunities in India in Economics are few and far between, and I have already started looking for RA positions but I can't be sure of getting a good one. Most colleges in India don't allow students to take courses unless they have qualified the college's entrance exam i.e. I can't simply enroll in a college and take up courses that would improve my profile. Is there any way to circumvent that problem(signalling subject knowledge without having them on transcripts) ? Hardly any one from my college ever applies for Phd in Econ. Would be grateful if someone could suggest other ways to augment my profile that would give me a fighting chance for 5-10 in 2018.
  10. Congrats guys !!! Looks like another reject for me
  11. Anyone heard from Columbia , NYU , Boston University ?
  12. So no email from Michigan means implicit rejection or do they have a waitlist
  13. I would gladly take a WL at this point in time, though given the staggered nature of Penn State notifications, one could fall in all three categories.
  14. 5-6 Penn State Rejects popped up on GC in the last hour. Legit ? Anyone
  15. Last Year posts on GC indicate that the offers were sent after 2nd week of Feb all at once. That is why these staggered offers are a bit surprising.
  16. Can anyone confirm the Penn State offers on grad cafe. Have been 6-7 posts till now spread over a number of days. Are the offers always distributed over a period of time ?
  17. Got a rejection from Minnesota. Does it imply that there is a high probability of getting rejected from Columbia,NYU, Northwestern, Michigan ?
  18. Type of undergraduate: Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee(majored in Chemical Engineering) Graduate: Indian Institute of Management Calcutta(MBA) (graduating in 2017) Undergrad GPA: 8.26/10 (10 in a class of 60) , was ranked in the top 5% in a class of 700 after Year 1 Grad GPA: 7.8/9 ( 20 in a class of 460) ( 8.25/9 in Econ and Maths) GRE: Q 170 V 163 AWA 4.5 TOEFL - 113 ( R 30, L 29, S 26, W 28) Math courses: Cal I-II (UG) A( Covering Differential equation, Vector Calculus, Fourier Transforms etc) Numerical analysis UG B+ , Statistics Grad A- , Optimization, Real Analysis ( Self Studied using Rudin as reference), Operations Research A+( Covering Markov analysis and Montecarlo Simulation), Dynamic Systems UG B Econ courses: Micro A- , Macro A , Intermediate Macro A+ , Behavioral Econ A+, Econometrics A+, Labour economics(pursuing), Game Theory (pursuing), Eco Dev A, International Economics (pursuing) Research Experience: None Published; 2 Working Papers ( Intergeneration Education Mobility ; Monetary Policy), basic research in Behavioral Econ, presently pursuing research in Eco Dev and Game Theory under profs who will write letter of recommendation Work Ex: Programming background, worked for a couple of years for a Tech firm TA: Not exactly the kind of TA in US universities, more of an informal type for Macro and Operations Research in Grad( will provide proof to Uni) SOP: Slightly longish in order to explain my weird profile Recommendation: One from Game Theory professor graduated from Princeton, one from Macro Prof from U Minnesota, and one from Eco Dev prof graduated from JNU (India) Interest: Dev Eco , Game Theory and Monetary Policy Applying to: Michigan, Minnesota, Columbia , BU, Maryland, Virginia, Cornell, Rochester Concerns: Unusual Background Apparent Lack of Math. I believe I am adequately prepared without much coursework to show for. For e.g. don't have courses on Matrix Algebra, Linear Algebra ( these courses are a prerequisite to get into IIT) Also 2 semesters of Calculus might seem less but Differentiation and Integration aren't taught to us in UG, they are part of prereq. Self Study might not count for much but I am fairly comfortable in Real Analysis, Introductory Number Theory. If it counts for anything, I have solved 100+ problems on Project Euler. Little Research work. Most of it is in process. Help Needed - Am I aiming too high? Want to crack at least 1 with funding.
