  1. A textbook example on how to spot a lefty snowflake college kid: he/she uses word "toxic" out of context of pharma-/toxicology/debt restructuring. EJMR is a great forum, with healthy amount of teasing and humor. I have asked several serious questions there in the past and always got very thorough and detailed responses (after filtering stuff like "GTFO undergrad" etc.) that helped me to make important decisions, not to mention serious research threads that pop up there once in a while. US kids got so soft and easily-offended recently that every channel of communication that does not require forced virtue signaling, and thus does not guarantee a "safe space", triggers them so hard they disregard this channel altogether. I bet, though, in 5-6 years you'll be checking this website like crazy for job-related news regardless of its "toxicity". P.S. Please do not reply to this post and do not start another useless exchange, we all know what you're going to say. This post was only meant to show that there are alternative opinions regarding EJMR and its role in the community. P.P.S. This will be my last post here. It was fun, I got into my dream school, and I wish you of all good luck in your future careers!
  2. Inside news/rumors about Chicago Harris PhD, anybody? I hope they will announce decisions today.
  3. lol at the last UMass post on GC. "I'm also wanting to go into feminist econ", ffs. This is what happens when your let sjw humanities people into you profession.
  4. Didn't hear anything from Haas either after the interview. HKS also keeps silence (though it seems that they have announced PolSci track results).
  5. I just got some news! HKS PEG Economics track hasn't made any offers yet, they are still deciding. One of my LOR writers (alumna of this program) asked the chair of the adcom. All the Econ track acceptances on the GC are fake! There is still hope, folks.
  6. Well dah :) The thing is that I don't consider myself a top applicant. I got 2 years of RA experience and a master degree, but my grades ain't stellar, and I probably was a borderline acceptance at UChicago. If, just if, UChicago rejected me for some reason, then I would have ended up without any offers at all.
  7. You should've received an email with registration link for the Dule OneLink or something
  8. Admitted at UChicago, rejected at Duke and (implicitly) at Caltech. Go figure.
  9. Can anyone confirm HKS PEG acceptance on GC? Didn't hear from them, though one of my LORs (I suppose it should be very good) is from an alumna of this program, so I expected at least a WL...
  10. My dude, sorry for you PSU reject, hope you'll get much better offers soon! Since you are a Duke student, can you mb confirm a bunch of Duke's PhD acceptances on GC? There are only three of them, though looking at past years, when Duke rolls them out, GC is flooded with new posts. I wonder if they are legit, and if yes, will there be more? I didn't hear from Duke yet, and this eats me, I really though it would be an easy shot.
  11. Mb the guy/girl reached out to the admission committee chair or whatnot and asked of his/her status (armored with a comparable offer at hand). A friend of mine contacted Yale just like that last year and was notified that he was waitlisted approx 2-3 days before they sent all the official emails. This is not to encourage you to bombard the department with inquiries, though.
  12. I never said it's a bad idea to go to UMass for PhD. Their placement history page do seems a bit fishy though: they do not report graduates' names and positions (hence it is impossible to distinguish tenure-track from non-tenure-track placements). Also, I wouldn't say their industry placements (there were only a handful of them in 2000-2017) are impressive.
  13. They, for some reason, still try to push this narrative about the "heterodoxy" of the department, but, honestly, I don't see it. It is true that some if its younger faculty work on somewhat unusual topics (though nothing that deviates much from the mainstream stuff), but all of those who self-identified as "heterodox economists" (Pollin, Skott, Epstein, etc) now either lean heavily toward mainstream as well, or went absolute deadwood, so as a PhD student you wouldn't want to work with them anyway. the rest of the folks there seem pretty alright, I am even following some of them on twitter.
  14. I am going to enroll to a language school in Luxembourg to start learning German and Luxembourgish (sic!) and will probably work in a very nonchalant manner on my current research, maybe visit some archives -- I am doing econ history, you see :)
  15. I did. Dream school, would take their offer over many more traditional "PhD in Economics" programs in top-15.
  16. Interesting. What are your primary fields? Indeed, Caltech usually makes announcements somewhat earlier than the rest of the schools.
  17. Great, mine were 10-12 min too. They just asked about my interests, what my plans are and what is the probability that I will attend conditional on them extending me an offer. Hope it's a good sign. I think that the delay with replies this year has something to do with the shutdown. Now that it is over for at least a month, we might hear from a bunch of schools next week!
  18. Hi guys! Just curious if anyone else was contacted by UCLA Anderson (GEM) and UC Berkeley Haas (Business & Public Policy) recently? There are no posts on the grad cafe. I was contacted by both for a short skype tête-à-têtes (can't call them interviews even) this week and I have been wondering ever since if this is the usual step of the admission process at these schools or are they just "ground searching". Thanks!
