1. ..the materials supplied by the test center. They're fairlly strict on using any materials other than what they provide. I've taken the test once and I did the same thing you describe.
2. No way, but you can write anything you want using the material provided by the testing center.
3. I have been struggling for two years. I've already taken the GMAT once for a 640 (ok verbal terrible quant). I struggle with my weaknesses which are lack of focus, energy and time. I will not give up on my target of 720. Only you can defeat you. The only defeat is to quit trying. Never quit!
4. What is the value of: 2^x + 2^y 2^y (1) x – y = 8 (2) x/y = -3
5. forget it...got it....
6. kaily - A few more thoughts to help you put this in perspective. Only 1 in 50 people (random US pop. sample) , without prep, will score 720 on GMAT or score 171 on LSAT. The rest of us poor unwashed masses have to bust our asses to reach these scores. You have no chance of an easy 170 LSAT. You might as well just study smarter/harder. That's the only realistic conclusion you should draw from your 580. I know. I got a crappy 640: good verbal, lousy quant. You must have both to get a really good score on these types of tests. Good luck.
7. OG or on the GMATprep software>> Use both. Princeton Review has a few good strategies for folks who who don't have grand GMAT aspirations. 500 is 39% so I think you can reach your target score without much trouble. I think that if you have time to thumb through any GMAT prep book, you should be able to get the additional 70 points with just a few hours study.
8. The LSAT is a tougher test than the GMAT. LSAT requires greater verbal and logic ability than the GMAT. I hope you're not setting yourself up for a bigger letdown.
9. > Congratulations on a great score! Please give an example of what you mean by the unfamiliar quant format?
10. OG10 & OG11 are actual GMAT questions which have been retired. The GMAT quant is a test of ninth grade math. Something every fourteen year old child should know. Problem is that it has been a few years since most of us were fourteen!
11. Fantastic improvement. Congratulations. Would you say that the quant you saw is the same as OG level? How many number properties questions did you see? I'm unconcerned about verbal, but I'm targeting 47/48 in quant so your feed back would be helpful. Thanks.
12. Well..ok, but $250.00 is high times here in Alabama....a weekend of beer and wings at Hooters. Good luck on the test.
13. r1234 - It was 800bob sitting in your seat. You should have let him finish the test! Seriously..that was a tough break for you. Good luck getting your money back and psyching yourself up mentally for the next try. Also, I would hold the test center responsible. Speak to the manager and insist that they right this wrong by reimbursing you or that they arrange with GMAT for the next test free. They will most likely give you a line of bullshit about how there is nothing that they can do. Be persistent and then politely threaten to sue the individual your speaking with. Remember to threaten to sue him personally. He won't give a shit if you sue the company. If you are convincing, he will take care of you asap.
14. suithink - Thank you very much.
15. I noticed errors in OG10 on the explanations for problem 424 p228 and problem 439 on p232. Anybody have complete errata for OG10 or OG11?
16. "Hells Bells" man! You're "Back in Black"! Fantastic!
17. Your improvement is an inspiration for me! What was your q and v for the first attempt? I too am trying for a huge jump. On my second attempt I need to achieve q47 from q34 (first attempt) to reach my goal. What was your q and v for the first attempt? Awesome man!
18. Thanks man. Verbal was my strong suit on the first attempt: v42, q34. I'm confidant I can boost verbal to 44 without much effort. Of course, I have an advantage because I was born in US and shoud be able to get a good verbal on GMAT. I feel like I can get to q47 on the second try. You folks from India are awesome. You guys are geniuses and it makes it tough on ordinary Joes like me! Best of luck to you. Thanks for your response.
19. Awesome improvement. Congratulations! What were your Quant and Verbal scores for both the first and second test? I'm trying to go from 640 to 720 and I'm interested in the score combos. Thanks.
20. Thanks man. I follow your reasoning. It can't hurt to ask Pearson. I will ask the assumption questions, including the cases, to Pearson. The Pearson guy I'm emailing now seems to understand how it works (He's Indian I think :>) We just had to go through a few support layers to get to him. I appreciate your offer to help me. I will take you up on your offer if I run into a concept I don't understand or I need a number property technique. My first GMAT attempt was T640, Q34, V42. As you can see, I am a quant moron. The thing is, I realize GMAT quant is simple. I think most twelve year old children would understand the OG quant. I am confidant I can score q47, v44 on my next attempt. This should enable me to get to a 720 total which is my goal. I hope a complete understanding of OG quant is enough to get me to q47. I copied you on the email I sent to Pearson.
21. ok...what they say doesn't seem reasonable to me..but here it is..if you suggest a response for me to make to Pearson...I will keep on them...at least they are talking to us! Our question: Irregardless of percentiles, how can a score Q50, V37 have a lower Total Score than Q50, V36? (Friend 2) - (name removed) tested on 2nd Nov 06 and received Q50, V37, Total 710. (Friend 1) - (unnamed) tested in Sep 2006 Q50, V36, Total 720. Pearson response: The right and wrong answers are converted to intermediate scores. These intermediate scores are then converted to the Quant and Verbal scaled scores that you see on the score report. The intermediate scores are also added and then converted to the GMAT Total Score. There is a range of intermediate scores for each scaled score. For example, intermediate Quant scores of 60 to 64 might correspond to the Quant scaled score of 50. In all likelihood friend 1 had intermediate scores on the high end of the interval and Friend 2 had intermediate scores on the low end of the Quant and Verbal intervals. Thus when added, the sum of the intermediate scores for friend 1 was higher.
22. Hey man, It seems to me that your Total should be 730. I asked Pearson our question in the manner below because "Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not one bit simpler." I also didn't want to suggest an answer so as not to prejudice their response. My intent is to keep driving for an answer that makes sense or until they change your score to 730. Question to Pearson: Here is our main question: Irregardless of percentiles, how can a score Q50, V37 have a lower Total Score than Q50, V36? Response from Pearson: I was just focusing on the total scores and percentile equivalents. I’ll go back and research the individual section scores. This may take a few days.
23. saurabhinindia - Here is the answer I got from Pearson. As you can see Pearson is confused on our second question. I'm going back at her on that point. I will send you a private message with the entire email that I send to Pearson. charu - The "period" is a year. See email from Pearson below. Based on the response below, I'm definitely going to test before July 1. GMAT test takers are getting "smarter" every year. 1)The percentile changes are scheduled to go into effect every year on July 1. In 2006, we ran into some technical difficulties and these changes were not finalized until October, 2006. 2)The two percentiles that you show for 710 (94th percentile) and 720 (96th percentile) are correct and correspond to the current tables. Did you have further questions on these?
