  1. stem: Cost= X*Thinkness*Length^2, where X is coefficient of proportion/price per unit of length and thikness Choice 1 gives the price difference of Th1 L1 X and Th2 L2 X. 0.2*4*X=0.1*4*X+160 X=400 Sufficient the same with 2 thus D
  2. 1. I'll take A instead of B. 'instead of' denotes substitution - i will not take A, i'll take B as a substitute of A. 2.I'll rather take A than B. 'rather than' denotes preference - both A and B are ok, but I prefer A and I will take A more eagerly than I would take B.
  3. DoingMyPart, Mt.Rainer, So, the only difference I see is: specially 1. in a special manner; "a specially arranged dinner" [syn: especially] 2: to a distinctly greater extent or degree than is common; "he was particularly fussy about spelling"; especially 1: to a distinctly greater extent or degree than is common;"he was particularly fussy about spelling"; 2. in a special manner; "a specially arranged dinner" [syn: specially]
  4. i choose E, because it's the only variant without ambiguous 'they/their' referring to 'army'. but even E doesn't look perfect
  5. agree with 800Bob, It's A Besides, I doubt that 'to contend something' (as in E) is idiomatic. What do you think?
  6. C 'to deal' seems more precise. What's the difference btw specially and Especially ???
  7. gmat0850 what scares me in C is 'formation is when materials combust'. Formation is a process, not a time. It cannot be 'when'. May be, this question is not properly worded. May be the authors meant 'Imperceptible to the eye or the nose' ? :)
  8. B 'require that the info be published' - idiomatic
  9. A says 'evidence for societies' E says 'evedence that societies arose simultaneously' Logically, it is the point of when and how societies arose rather than a point of whether there were any societies.
  10. B. completely avoids ambiguity. Other variants use strange ellipse of the verb.
  11. only D clearly says 'monoxide is formed when materials are combusted' but 'monoxide imperceptible to the ear' is really strange
  12. 1. 'Majority view but think' - only D&E maintain parallelism. E. 'would in the future' - wrong tense, sice we have Present (view) not Past hence D 2. waiting for a reasonable explanation :) The only thing that bothers me in D is abundance of 'like', while B is more precise.
  13. not A,B,D because of 'that' meaning 'goods' not C because of 'goods in worth'. It looks unidiomatic and even if it's not, imho it means smth like 'valuable goods' Hence E
  14. I see it in the following way: now B doesn't have this useless 'by' preposition, but still B parallels unequal concepts: 'such a variety of criteria as ABC'. Variety parallel with ABC. But these ABC are not a variety, they are certain criteria. A says: 'variety of criteria such as ABC'. Criteria and ABC are parallel. That's why I chose A. hope it helps
  15. C. there's elipse here. Second 'are' is not obligatory, like in 'I'm as old as you (are)' A. unidiomatically says 'MG are likely in planning'
  16. E. though i'm confused with 'within them'. As for Tenses, the y seem to be ok 'were closed becuse before that T had raised and salt was crystalizing at the moment when chambers were closed'
  17. My resoning: The sentence doesn't compare status1 and status2. It says the status remains the same regardless of the election. It was the same and it is the same - action started some time ago and is still going on. Thus, Present Perfect is obligatory. as for 'Since', I agree, it would be the best marker of Present Perfect. as for 'During', I do not agree, its rephrasing would be 'last century'. But 'in last century' just means 'in last 100 years counted from now'.
  18. 'A' correctly expresses the idea that 'layer of dirt covered the first 3-4 feet' 'B' tells about 'high dirt' - nonsense as for the clause/sentence, imho 'House was conical' is a sentence. 'its framework overlaid and banked' is a clause, because there is no predicate, just two Past Participle. If it were a sentence, then a semicolon would have to be used btw 2 indep. sentences.
  19. A. 'according to criteria' + 'criteria ABC' - correct B. 'according to variety' + 'variety by ABC' - wrong
  20. completely agree. D&D 1. because it maintains parallelism 2. because it is logic, precise and because correct Tenses are used.
  21. yeah, D is the only one with proper 'by at least two million dollars'
  22. to difine the correct preposition, I usually just mentally read a word combination in reverse sequence: a cigarette in which thin layers = thin layers of paper in a sigarette a cigarette for which thin layers = thin layers of paper for a sigarette - illogical
  23. A. 'broke policy...for(because of) deciding to sell' - illogical B. 'broke policy... for(because of) the decision at to sell' - illogical C. 'broke policy.. when it was reorganized ... for its decision to sell' - illogical + ambiguous 'it' D. 'broke policy ... in deciding to sell' - seems to be the best, but i'm confused by 'in' E. 'by deciding at its reorganization in 1958 on the selling of' - wordy.
  24. Perhaps the point is that 'that violence and stark terror pervade EI Slavador' is a subject and 'was reported' is predicate, not clause&sentence respectively. Therefore, Sequence of Tenses is not the guideline here.
  25. I remember this exaple from the OG. I explained it to me in the following way: 'less lending' is Adjective+Noun. It is not parallel with 'inreasing pressure' where Action is seen, but parallel with 'increased pressure' - 'Adjective+Noun'. Why an Action - The decision of the bank was: to give less lending, to increase pressure. But if we choose 'increasing pressure' t would mean that bank's decision was 'to keep increasing the pressure step by step'
