  1. Hey Bigdog, also check the mathreview from the gre.org website. You can find it with powerpep software also, which has math review button. In that you will find all topics which can appear on gre math section. http://www.gre.org/pracmats.html
  2. Hi Dingus, your first and third ans are correct. but second one is B. for the first analogy, i still didnot understand the analogy. Tamper means: to make secrete illegal arrangement with, as by bribing.????
  3. 1)Tamper : Adjust a) misrepresent:communicate b)warp:deform c)confess:tell d)mar:deface e)undermine:stop 2)Metaphor : Literal a)biography:accurate b)melody:spoken c)poem:rhythmic d)anthem: patriotic e)ballet:intricate 3)Prescience : Future a)irrationality:sanity b)predictability: past c)irascibility:emotions d)erudition:esoterica e)talkativeness:loquacity
  4. No. of ways to pick 5 numbers from 1 to 20 = 20c5 = 17*19*48. No. of ways not to pick up 10 and 20 = 18c5 = 36*14*17. Therefore probability of not picking up 10 and 20=18c5/20c5 = 36*14*17/17*19*48 = 21/38. So, the probability of 5 numbers include 10,20 = 1 - 21/38 = 17/38.
  5. Each company has 3 rep. Consider them as a whole. and there are 6 companies So we have to choose 2 of 6 = 6c2. And From each company one representative = 3c1 = 3 Therefore Ans.= 6c2(3c1*3c1) = 15*3*3 = 135.
  6. oh yup! for 16), I did mistake in calculating x. x=36*40*12 and therefore per person charge when 40 people chart = 36*10*12/40 = 108. Thanx.
  7. 16. A group can charter a particular aircraft at a fixed total cost. If 36 people charter the aircraft rather than 40 people, then the cost per person is greater by $12. What is the cost per person if 40 people charter the aircraft? Ans: Let x be the total cost for chartering aircraft. Therefore x/40 is per person cost. When 36 people chart, per person cost is x/36. x/40 + 12 = x/36 solving, x = 2160. Therefore per person cost when 40 people work = 2160/40 = 54.
  8. [(2^2-1) (2^2+1)](2^4+1) (2^8+1) = [(2^4-1) (2^4+1)](2^8+1) //(a+b)(a-b) =a^2-b^2 = (2^8-1)(2^8+1) =(2^16-1)
  9. Q. Seven one dollar bills are to be distributed among Lucia,Gomez and Domingo so that each person receives at least one $1. Column A: The number of ways to ditribute the bills so that at least one person receives at least $3. Column B: The total number of ways to distribute the bills. Is there any easy and quick way to solve this problem? I got confused a lot while solving it.
  10. or in this case the remainder is -7???????????? so n cannot be -ve?
  11. so n can -51 which satisfy this condition. I think ans is D
  12. matroid: Why did you suppose number n as non negative. The number n when divided by 11, remainder is 7. So we can say: n= 11x + 7. which also when divided by 5 leaves remainder 1. If x= 4, then n=51 (Remainder =1,when divided by 5) So n is +51. but is there any number which is -ve also.
  13. Column A: Time required to travel d miles = d/s Column B Time required to travel d/2 miles = (d/2)/2s = d/4s. As d and s both r positive, column A is bigger.
  14. thanx awhig! I am preparing from barrons only for maths section. Is it sufficient? i think probability ,permutation and combination is not covered completely in barrons. compare 69^2 and 70^2 - 139 column A = (70-1)^2 = 70^2 +1 - 2*70 = 70^2 - 139 therefore both columns are same.
  15. Hi Lorcar, dont worry. what is ur major? If you r applying for master in computer or science then may be university will give more importance to quant score rather than verbal. Is it ok to take exam after the deadlines? was verbal section very difficult? Is the actual GRE difficult than powerprep software? 2) For sitting arrangement problem: Each couple can be sitted in 2 ways.(WH or HW) And if we consider each couple(husband and wife) as one number(a,b,c). then problem will be how many ways we can arrange (a,b,c). Which is equal to, 3*2*1 = 6. Thus total number of times the couples can be arranged in the way so that husband sits close to his wife = 2*2*2*6= 48. Is it correct? How did u approach this problem?
  16. Hi Bigdog4, I also solved the 4th exam. My answers are: sec 1: bdcbc accdd adcdc eecab eeaea dbcda becbe dce sec 3 abbcd accaa bddaa dbbeb edeca badce I also think that number 6 is print mistake. ans a. and what abt Q.25. I think its a.
  17. My approach is, Let x = amount of saturated fats in S. and y = amount of polysaturated fats in S. Therefore , x+2 = amount of saturated fats in T and y+2 = amount of polysaturated fats in T. Column A is, x/y and Column B is x+2/y+2. So just cpmpare two fractions. whichever is greater is the answer. One of the method to compare two fraction is, multiply the numerator of each fraction with the denominator of the other fraction. and compare the two products. The fraction whose numerator contributes to the larger product is the greater of the two fractions. Therefore, A :x/y ............ B: x+2/y+2 x(y+2) ............. (x+2)(y) xy + 2x .............. xy + 2y 2x ................2y //as x and y both r positive, xy can be cancelled. x ............... y and x > y. So column A is greater.
  18. Can somebody plz explain 4th one? rave: to speak or write with wild enthusiasm, to speak wildly and incoherently pan: to criticize or review harshly flak: strong clamorous criticism or opposition. pan and flak both can be opposite.
  19. 1) Let x be the length of small piece. Therefore length of large piece is 2x+1. (x) + (2x+1) = L x = (L - 1)/3 Length of large piece = L - x = L- (L-1)/3 = (2L+1)/3. 2) Divisors of 64 are the factors of 64: (1,64,2,32,4,16,8). Out of these numbers 64,32,4,16 and 8 are the multiple of 4. Ans is 5.
  20. I think for 2) the word "Ironically" gives the hint that the two words must be opposite. Therefore though the city was seen as an unlikely theatre town, the enterpreneur beleived that it is appropriate to bulid theatre over there. So Ans is D. I was confused between A and D.
  21. 2) Because of the lack of theatres, the city came, ironically, to be viewed as an ------------ theatre town, and that reputation led enterpreneurs to believe that it would be -------- to build new theatres there. Does the word "ironically" give some hint in this sentence? why not ans. D? I aslo thought A but was not sure. Could u plz give explanation.
  22. Liability: 1) The legal obligation to make good any loss or damage that occurs(responsible) 2) Vunerable to some attack or change. Immunity: 1)exemption or freedom from something bordensome such as legal obligation. 2) Resistance to or protection against (some disease). In both meaning they are opposite.
