  1. Hey deepakz, No Probs with your date.. it is perfect... Just practice more computer based tests like Cambridge review. Practice GMAT problem solving questions from the GMAT forum.... and you could also buy Quant Aptitude by RS Aggarwal to hone your mathematical skills. Best of luck Saraj
  2. Ra_prasadh, You can take the GRE again only once a calender month, so you would have to give it in oct only.... Regd preparation, I would suggest to do GMAT maths as your maths is quite Low... You can download the OG questions from this site or from scoretop. Apart from that browse the GMAT problem solving section.. They seem to have great questions.. Take as many CBT's as possible. Try the cambridge review CD, it has good maths questions..you could also try Quant Aptitude by RS aggarwal. Hope it helps Saraj
  3. Hi samy, Great score.... keep up the good work..... Best of luck for your apping process....
  4. See mohit, From my personal experience, I have known that GRE is 99% a matter of LUCK and 1% hardwork (I might be exaggerating here... but LUCK DOES PLAY A MAJOR ROLE)... I had also worked HARD on my first attempt, but screwed up eventually.... However I immediately took the retake date as soon as I came back from the test center.... I got a decent score (NOT A VERY GOOD ONE)... However there are several people I know who have a really good score in the first attempt without working that hard... I really empathize with you.... You could see asphalt's thread when she couldn't do well in her first attempt... I agree with you 100% that maths is becoming tough... but its a matter of luck... my second time maths was fairly easy... Take your time and weigh your options... you will feel better... Remember its your call... we are here to just give you advice... Hope it helps Cheer up[clap] Saraj
  5. I dont think taking GRE recently or late is the deciding factor... Infact I also faced the same problem first time I got 1320(V590,Q730) and second time, which was three weeks later,I got 1480(V680,Q800), I mailed my query to many people including grad coordinators of univs and they said that since the lift in the score is good, most consider the latest one... Some univ like purdue WL might take average.....
  6. hey dsaqwert, Were you satisfied with your score??? personally I was expecting something around 290-300. However consulting from various sources I found that we need to clear the threshold of 250+. I hope that if I get 5, I can make it to 275... I just hope that PSU doesn't have any special criteria for the TOEFL scores. Saraj
  7. Gave my TOEFL today... was expecting more..... However here is the break up... Listening: 30 Structure: 13-29 RC's: 26  (I had double checked all questions...dont know where I went wrong...Though the level was a bit higher than Powerprep) Over all: 230-283 My essay topic was: Some people like spending time with a few friends while others like spending time with large number of friends.Discuss the advantages of each. Which one would you prefer. I wrote about 5 paras of medium size and mentioned various points. I think I might get a 5. I hope its a decent score.... what do you say...kinda depressed with it....
  8. Please evaluate this one too.... By the way Bruno and He hels.... where are thou??:hmm: Some people pay money for the things they want or need. Other people trade products or goods for what they need. Compare the advantages of these two ways of obtaining things. Which way do you prefer? Explain why. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It is a widely accepted phenomenon that we need sacrifice something in order to achieve something. This sacrifice may however be of two different kinds. Some people need to pay money in return for the things they want, while the other trade products for the things they need. I would prefer giving money in return for the desirable things. There are myriads of advantages of offering money in return for the products required. The threshold advantage is that money is a commodity that is universally acceptable and one can pay the exact amount for the item for which the procured goods are worth. On the other hand if a person trades another product in return for the goods needed, there is a possibility that the dealing may not be fair, or in other words, one good might be more expensive than the other good. Another advantage offered by money over the "barter" system is that money does not get spoilt over time. However organic goods like fruits & vegetable may deteriorate with time and its reciever might incur a loss if such goods are not used immediately. When trading large quantities of goods, there might be chances that some traders may be gulled by the sly traders as some of the large concealed quantities may contain the goods to be mixed with cheaper alternatives, which may not be perceptible from the outside, during the dealing. However, a disadvantage of the money system is that when we pay money in return for the goods needed, the reciever cannot make use of the money directly and needs to again pay the money to someone else in return for the goods which he/she desires and thus, this cycle continues. Instead, if we procure goods by giving away goods, both of such commondities can be consumed directly. To sum up, I find the advantages of obtaining things by giving money to far outweigh the advantages of trading goods in return for desirable goods. As a result I would definitely prefer the former mode of obtaining goods more than the latter.

Hey dipalsoni, Its a good essay but I think you should add 1-2 more lines in your first and , second last and last para as they look quite small. And one more thing: hadn't eklayva developed the skills on his own, keeping Dronacharya as an idol???...It was only when he had mastered the art by practicing, did he approach him...(Thats what i know) Ziyod has given a good evaluation of your essay. I think you would get 4.5-5.
  10. Please rate this one and give me some suggestions...... Thanks.... Saraj Think of the most interesting class you have ever taken. Why did you enjoy this class so much? Use specific reasons and details to explain your answer. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Having been extremely fascinated by the myriads of manufacturing process prevalent in today's world, I eagerly awaited the advent of the "Manufacturing Processes" subject. Eventually the wait was over and I finally got the opportunity to attend this class in my fifth semester, which was taught by Professor Tiwari. I had heard that Professor Tiwari had the exceptional talent of bringing life to all the subjects which he taught, especially "Manufacturing Processes". Despite his old age and gaunt appearance, he would put in all his efforts and would illustrate every aspect of the subject with examples. However, he was a martinet and would become livid with anger when any of his students breached the protocols that he had fabricated. I was always curious to know how the intricate components were manufactured and how they achieved almost harmonious shapes each time. Proffesor Tiwari had eventually cleared both these doubts during the course of his teaching. He also explained that the machines called the Computer Numeric Machines or CNC have come in vogue and that these machines entail minimum human interference. When these machines are used along with robots and Automated Guided Vehicles or AGV's, we attain a perfectly human free manufacturing environment. After Dr. Tiwari had given us the detailed overview of this new manufacturing environment, he started asking us a brief questions to asses what we had learned so far under his tutelage. However, when he wasn't satisfied with our responses, he said he would take us to the Flexible Manufacturing Lab in order to give us a live demonstration. This live demostration was indeed an eye opener for all of the students as it enabled us to easily fathom all the facts which he taught in class. I had personally enjoyed every bit of this practical experience. To sum up, I was really fortunate to learn my favorite subject under the tutelage of Dr. Tiwari. His eloquence coupled with his personal experience made all his lectures impossible to forget, even in the long run. His lectures definitely increased my interest in this field and I eagerly hope to learn more subjects related to Manufacturing from him in the future.

Ashiabano, I had edited your essay completely and it took me 40 mins to do so...However, in the end, my comp got hanged and I had to "End task" it. (Darn!!!.......). I am soooooo sorry...... A brief comment: your essay has many(I mean MANY....) spelling mistakes which could eventually pull your score down.... You have also put it a lot of redundant information.... One more tip... avoid using "It would help the inhabitants of my town" instead use "It would help my community/society"... Keep practicing you would eventually get a hang of it... I would rate you at max 4.0 (Sorry.... really bites :-) ) Saraj
  12. Hey He hels and bruno.... I would be greatful if you could evaluate the above two essays also..... vdgreat would also be waiting for your replies....:) Thanks...

Bruno, He hels please evaluate this one: Thanks Families having fewer children should be rewarded for preventing overpopulation. Do you agree or disagree with the statement. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Overpopulation has become a major concern in the present era, as there are myriads of disadvantages associated with it. For example, due to current brimming population, there always remains a shortage of food and other necessaties.Overpopulation also coerces the people to destroy forests to fulfil their housing requirements and hence disrupt the natural cycles. This disruption eventually proves fatal to existence of life on earth. To mitigate the harmful effects of overpopulation, authorities from various nations should compel denizens to confine the size of their families. Confinement of the family size would lessen the proliferated birth rates and as a result, this restriction would ensure that the population would, in the long run, be well under control. If the families having fewer children are rewarded, it would serve as an incentive for them and would encourage other family members to also follow the same suite. There are scads of people who are oblivious to the ill effects of overpopulation, and as a result do not even attempt to confine their family size. The rewards offered to other smaller families in their immediate vicinity would lure them and they would stop to give birth to more offsprings. This process of rewarding may have some negative consequences as well. Some families, who have large number of children and whose family members are in dire need of money, may indulge in abandonment or even killing of their excessive children in order to be elligible for the rewards. However, the governments can successfully mininmize such cases by imposing huge fines and punishments on the culprits. To sum up, I find the advantages of rewarding families having fewer children, to far outweigh its disadvantages. As a result,I would definintely urge the governments of overpopulated countries to implement this course of action. The sooner this practice is implemented, the sooner we can ensure that the future earth would be a better place to live in.
  15. While you are at it, please evaluate this one too. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ At the culmination of the Internet usage across the world, a possibility may exist in the future, allowing the students to prefer studying at home using television and internet as their means of garnering education. However there are myriads of disadvantages of such a mode of studying.I believe that traditional education cannot be supplanted by the internet education, which one would like to recieve at home. Although I agree with the fact that internet would help in acquiring and disseminating information quickly,it would make the students indolent after a prolonged time.Students would strain their eyes after staring at the television or the computer screen throughout the day. This might result in visual disorders and would also aid in increasing headaches.Apart from these health problems, the sedentary task of students being glued to their cathode ray tubes(CRT's) throught the day would make the students more obese. Studying at home would also deprieve the students of viewing actual three dimensional objects instead of watching its 2D representation of their television or computer screens.Amidst the conventional teaching at traditional schools, teachers plan short visits to make the students exposed to new areas which would hone their skill further.Students who prefer learnings at home would be deprieved of these visits.Besides this, students spending enormous amount of time at home would become recluse and this would hamper their social life. They would eventually shun the company of their friends. Using the internet and television, the students would have the freedom to choose whatever they wish to watch and this would also increase juvienile delinquency.Students initially out of curiosity would engage in non moral activities like violence or theft and would later become addicted to it.This would have a deletorious effect of the societies. To sum up, I find that the disadvantages of using the internet and television as the modes of education at home to far outweigh its advantages. As a result I would definitely prefer to study at the traditional schools offering conventional education instead of using internet and television to study at home.

Thanks Bruno and He hels, I would definitely try to inculcate your advice in my future essays.
  17. Please evaluate this one. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ One of the most fundamental criterion for selecting a university is its size. Some students select universities that are big while others have a predilection for smaller universities. Both the universities have their distinct advantages and disadvantages and one must be acquainted with these facts before enrolling in an university. Bigger universities are generally highly ranked and they have more eminent faculty members.By taking admissions in such univerisites, students are able to utilize the expensive and sophisticated laboratory equipments and thus are able to better understand the subject. However, in such a large university, it is impossible to establish contact will all the professors and students and as a result one might not get the amount of attention which he/she recieves. The university campus may also be huge and as a result, students may easily be lost in vast areas and hence may be late for his/her classes. Smaller universities on the other hand, are relatively less famous. However, since the faculty members are also less, students are given more personalised attention. The teachers can identify the weak students and differenciate them from the genious ones, thereby giving them attention accordingly. The campus of a small university may be easy to navigate and as a result, students can reach their destinations on time. I would definitely like to pursue my education in a small university as I could establish a better acquaintance with my teachers in such a university.Since the number of courses offered in a smaller university would be less as compared to a big univerity, they would be taught by specialized teachers. The studies in a small university would be economical and I can easily make friends in such a univerisity.I could travel across the campus and locate the departments more easily.Such small universities generally have an ambience which is analogous to a large family. To conclude, the choice of selection of a university varies from one individual to another. Some are attracted to the grandeur of a big university while others, including me, prefer the close knit ambience of a smaller one.
  18. Hey Yesseramin and alwaysahead, Don't be so underconfident in verbal. Its certainly not that big a deal.(that is, if you practice hard:) ). In my opinion practice the verbal from the big book and keep doing that unless you start getting at max 4-5 questions wrong.Jot down all the errors that you make and keep reviewing them periodically. You could use google image search to search for images of a word, that would help u retain the word in your memory for a considerably longer period than rote learning. Download all the verbal material from this site.(Believe me... this site is brimming with GRE material and even I wasn't able to go through all of it..) Work hard and eventually your efforts will bear fruit. Hope it helps. Veena, You could find the 3000 rc file at the scoretop forum (www.scoretop.com) I think you could also find it while searching in this forum also. Best of luck. Saraj
  19. Hi Friends, I have a query about emailing professors and establishing a contact with them during the apping process. I am interested in emailing the professors of the universities I intend to apply, and try to establish a contact with them for my MS, however a friend told me that it is not necessary at MS level and only students applying for Phd contact professors. What would you suggest?? Saraj

Thanks bruno, for your advice. Could u rate the following essay which I wrote today as a part of the Cambridge fourth test. I would also be grateful if you could provide some more tips as I am beginning to have jitters:eek: after reading your conclusion that I might have gotten 0 in the above essay. Please help me out as my exam is next week. Thanks Some people wish to ban smoking in public areas,Others don't agree. What is your opinion? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The harm caused by smoking is evident in the advertisements and commercials, in addition to this, smoking also has a deletorious effect on the health of the people in the immediate vicinity of the smoker . Due to the immense heath hazards of smoking to the passive smokers, smoking should be done at places away from the throngs. Smoking is an addicition, which is generally started by students when they approach the adulthood. In its incipient stages, it is mainly encouraged by friends as an indicator for virility and strength in the male students. Many of the female students also start smoking at this age to emulate their male peers and to prove them that they are equally tough. This initial passion for smoking later transcends into habitual usage and as a result chain smokers are born. Once a person becomes addicted to smoking, he/she finds it hard to forsake it. These people conjure up myriads of benefits they claim to recieve from smoking, for example many people tend to smoke in order to mitigate tension or to overcome lonliness. They smoke throughout the day and at virtually all the places they travel during the day. The chain smokers are oblivious to the scads of people around them which are harmed because of the smoke emanated from their cigarettes or pipes. This smoke has harmful effects on the passive smokers after a prolonged time. Smoking the public places also lures non-smokers into smoking. It is this enticement, which proliferates the number of smokers. To sum up, smoking harms the passive smoker equally, as it does to the active smoker. To minimize this harm, we should undertake efforts to ostracize smoking in public and impose heavy fines on the offenders. Banning public smoking may also reduce the number of people who are enticed to smoking by seeing other people smoke. In the final analysis I would definitely agree to ban smoking in public.
