  1. hey chix.. Thanks dude... you have been a great help all along.. but man... i am SOO bummed about the quant score :((
  2. hi folks, Finished my GMAT Saturday Got 730. M 47  , v 44 i have been sulking since then.. I calulated the solutions to a couple of quant probs correctly early in the test (in the first 15), but clicked on the wrong choice in haste / carelessness. If only i had done better in quant .. i would have reached my target of 760 - 770.. 47 in quant is a HORRIBLE score for me. NEVER got that low a quant score in practise tests.. well i guess 730 is not bad.. have to live with in anyway. don't plan to retake, as i may not be able to repeat my verbal performance. for the quant, i feel i was "overprepared"; beleive it or not! i pracctised for 2 months with all kinds of Quant questions, but the actual questions were at least a couple of notches EASIER than what we see in the forums here. Strange as it sounds, that threw me off track. I feel soooooo low because I KNOW i had a higher score in hand. I got stuck on maybe the 9th problem.. wasted a lot of time on it. hence in the next problem after that, in an attempt to make up for lost time, I clicked too soon on an answer and committed to it!. As soon as I did that, I realized my folly.. but TOO late :( The next question was SOOOO easy, that my heart sank, and never fully recovered from that. I could tell right away that i screwed up, cos i did not get any difficult questions after that, till the end.! Verbal was fun.. Lots of nice SCs and CRs about 3 boldfaced one's The last RC was a killer. It was long .. and I was not able to concentrate at all. The content was VERY easy, but I was drained. I read, and re-read, and re-re-read parts of the RC again.. but never really "connected" with the RC. To make matters worse, around this time a new GMAT taker was assigned the seat next to me. The sound from his continuous keyboard thumping really did not help. I guess I must have made some mistakes in that RC. Otherwise I was confident of an even higher score. I will work on a detailed debrief if that will be useful to anyone. Please let me know if you folks have any questions.
  3. agree with Chix and centrino, i solved it Chix's way, but centrino's way is much faster!! Thanks. By the way in some other thread / forum, I saw a variation of this question. That apparentl was also from a recent " actual GMAT" The questions asked about the numer of ways to paint the wall with white being one of the colors. And the ans. is 32 ways. With white as a "compulsory color, we have five colors to choose from, so 2^5 = 32.
  4. Of course.. slope = 0.. stupid typo in my  last post.
  5. If a line does not *ever* pass throgh the 2nd and 3rd quadrant, it implies that it is paralell to the x axis, and that its slope is = 1. Hence D
  6. The question does not ask about the ways in which you can choose the group!! The question is "What is the probability that there will be 4 in each groups" the possible ways of splitting the 8 people: 1+7 2+6 3+5 4+4 Hence probability = 1/4. Whats tho OA on this CTG??
  7. No shankara. 3/2 is *one* of the solutions. The solution that you get if you assume the side of the outer square to be 8. Since the square can be virtually of any size, you have numerous solutions that follow the same ratio. Someone please provide a better explanation if possible. :))
  8. trymore, great explanation. but it took me some time to figure out ":The smallest number multiple of 2 > 10^6 is (2^10)^2= 2^20" Is there any easy way to get to this? i literally had to keep adding powers of 2 till I got to more than the reqd figure. Takes too much time!
  9. rcfobia, could you please explain this a little more? TIA
  10. I likeyou explanation thelongwait! Thanks Whats the general "technique " for this? take them as they come? or always solve quadratically? or plug innumbers? I always find these ones tough.. Is there a collection of these kind of problems somewhere? so we can get comfortable with them?
  11. Let side of A = a; volume of A= a^3 Let side of B = b; volume of B = b^3 Given: a^3 = 2 b^3 a = cube root of (2*b^3) = b * cube root of 2 Hence side of A = cube root of 2 times side of b.
  12. The reasoning is accurate, The answer however would be 10. 12*1/3 + 24*1/4 = 4+6 = 10
  13. If the numbers are 7, 13, 20, 27, 34, 41, 48 , the range of remainders would be 6, but the sum would be 42! If the numbers are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, the range of remainders is 6. Hence A is not sufficient. If the numbers are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, the range of remainders is 6. and the sum of remainders is 21. This is true for ALL consequetive numbers between 1 and 100. Hence B satisfies.
  14. I would go with B. "Any people", in D does is surely incorrect.
  15. C has a lot of issues. 1. From " Edward S.Curtis had made more than 40,000 photographs of the American Indian published in a multivolume work regarded as a magnificent" ...It sounds like the photographs were taken of people published in the books. (rather than the photographs taken being published) 2. from "....piece of visual anthropology, starting before the turn of the century and continuing for some thirty years." It sounds like the visual anthropology started before the turn of the century. B makes more sense. The modifier makes sense.
  16. OA is right lets say people in the low paying service (LPS)occupation in 1982 = 40 out of a total of 120 people and LPS employees in 1995 = 60. Since the percentage can't change, now the total employees is 180. This satisfies the first condition. there is no change in share of total employment. It remains 30 %. Now consider "high paying service occupations" (HPS). The total number of people employed changes. less that LPS, but the share increase. For example the total HPS in 1982 = 1 total HPS in 1995 = 7. number of increase = 6 (which is lesser than the number of change in LPS, 30) But the percentage change is almost 700 % ! Now this kind of a situation is possible only if the number of HPS is lower that LPS in 1982. Hence A. Makes sense?
  17. I would choose between C and D. D I guess makes more sense. The argumnet says that "the cost to consumers for retail items will drop." This implies that cost to ALL retail items will drop. Hence I think that the assumption here is that most (if not all) retail establishments would distribute fliers if subsidized. Hence D. What's the OA?
  18. The answers anyway would be B and E respectively. B for the CR because, since the stem says that Merlon county has some households above 40K, it obviously has some between 40 and 60K
  19. given expressions = n-x+n-y+n-c+n-k => 4n - (x+y+c+k) -------(1) Given stmt 1. x+y+c+k+n/5 = n x+y+c+k+n = 5n x+y+c+k = 4n -------------(2) subst (2) in (1) 4n -4n = 0 Stmt 2. gives us nothing. Hence A.
  20. among the choices it has to be E. we have to look at the contrast that the sentence is trying to create. "HL tomatoes only look less apetizing, but they are more flavorful" => makes sense. "HL tomatoes only look less apetizing, although more flavorful" => does not make sense.
  21. Will go with c. "To speak".. should be followed with "to do" (Edited :-)
  22. would think 1. b -> To me A. reads as ..fit for a "gourmet by most Japanese" 2. b -> what is cultivated? madagascar prewinkle? or the derivative? 3. b -> would makes it sound like the expert is trying to make it fail 4. a -> .. "highest price as prominently as.."sounds better than " as prominently higher price.. as".. 5. e - > others are not comparing like items. What are the OAs ?
