  1. For those who have done campus interviews, what is the implicit dress code?
  2. Hi everyone. I got accepted to one of my top choices, and they've invited me to visit campus as part of their admitted students day. Unfortunately, the date is a pretty difficult conflict with a work deadline, so it's going to be really tough for me to make it. Do you think it's essential that I come on the admitted students day?
  3. Hey y'all! I have been contacted by a few tier- 1 schools that are interested in flying me out to visit their campuses and departments. That being said, it is virtually impossible for me to take off work. Is it acceptable for me to decline a campus visit without adversely affecting the outcome? Thanks!
  4. Hey guys, here is my situation and I am looking for an appropriate way to deal with it . I got an invitation to a campus visit two weeks ago and I accepted the invite. Last week I got an offer from one of my very target school and a very ideal contract from them. I have not yet signed the legal document, but the chance that I am signing it is 99%. In this case, I feel bad no matter what I decide on the campus visit. If I still go, I feel like I am wasting their budget and time. If I cancel the trip, I feel bad as I had expressed my great enthusiasm about visiting them. What will be the most proper way of dealing with this?
  5. Hey all, So I just got invited for a campus visit from one of my reach schools (suuuper excited) and am kind of wondering what to expect and, more importantly, how to prepare. I've had a quick chat with one of the professors and he told me that they're inviting a few more people than they have spots. It sounds like they day is going to be filled with campus tours, meeting grad students, and meeting several professors. Is there any advice those of you more familiar with the process can give? What do I need to be prepared for? I assume I should know about the research of the faculty members I end up meeting and I probably should have a few questions prepared. Anything else? What kind of questions are good to ask? What questions do those of you already enrolled wish you would have asked back then? I keep telling myself that it's also a chance for me to get to know the place and the faculty their, but I am currently too worried about getting in that I'm just thinking about how to increase my chances of admission. Sorry for the lose collection of thoughts. My excitement may have gotten the better of me here. Hope some of you might chime in with some thoughts. I'd really appreciate anything you can think of. TL;DR: Looking for things to think of/prepare for campus visit
  6. Hi everyone! New comer as applicant for Accounting 2018 Fall. I just got a campus interview from one of my perfectly-matched programs(as far as in my opinion XD). This invitation came way earlier than expected. There will be workshop and individual interviews with professors. Just wondering generally speaking, how how much is the chance of admission from campus visit? I know maybe this is a hard to answer question, but any thoughts could help! Thanks! Also, any tips for how to behave during the visit? especially the workshop part. I will share my experience with the visit and forgive me for hiding the name.

  9. I will be applying to economics Ph.D. programs this fall, but before that, my wife and I are moving to one of a few cities that are part-way between her new job and my likely eventual grad school. (Yes, I will be putting all my application eggs in one or two baskets, but that's another matter.) We need to choose a house based partly on location and commute times. Based on the houses that are available in our price range, our options are basically for me to have a 30-minute commute and her a 40-45-minute commute, or for me to have a 50-60-minute commute and her a 20-25-minute commute. She will be working at an 8-to-5 job five days a week for the foreseeable future, whereas I might have a more flexible work/commute schedule because I'll be in school. My question is: in most major U.S. economics Ph.D. programs, what is the weekly on-campus class and research schedule like throughout the five or six years it takes to graduate? I figured the students are on campus five days a week during their first two years when they have a heavy class load, but then maybe they don't need to go to campus every day after they start their doctoral research project. In your experience, do students and/or their mentors think it's acceptable, desirable, or feasible for the student to meet with their mentor in person once every week or two and communicate over email/Skype/phone the rest of the days? It seems like the internet would make writing, researching, and data-crunching from home quite easy. The point being, if I only need to make a long commute every day for the first two years, we would be much better off choosing a city that gives my wife a short commute. Thanks for any advice you can give me.
