  1. Hi All! Does anyone have any idea how hard it is to get accepted to UIUC Econ PhD program as it's ranked among the top 30? And how are the admitted student profiles? Thank you in advance!
  2. I was admitted to a few programs somewhat similar in ranking and I need to start thinking about where I will go. I'm new to the academic environment, so I'm not sure what is ultimately most important in a PhD program. What should I ask professors and advanced students? Or what should I be hoping to learn? I have a few ideas, but I'd appreciate any advice. Thank you!
  3. So I just got an email from one school that said the Econ department will recommend to the Graduate School that you be admitted to our PhD program. It also mentions a visitation day that I have to rsvp by Friday. I have two questions: 1. What does it mean to be recommended to be admitted? Is this essentially saying that I have admitted? 2. I am working several hours from the nearest large airport and about 12.5 hours from the school. I also have very limited PTO, so I don’t think I am really able to visit (this is the first response of 19 programs). How much does this hurt my admissions/funding prospects if I explain my situation to them? How often to full time professionals skip these events and how understanding are these schools? I was thinking of asking to speak with the professor who reached out via phone - how would that be taken?
  4. Dear all, I've just completed a bachelor degree in PPE (Politics, Philosophy, Economics) and I decided to take a year-off in order to best decide what to do the next year. For sure I'll apply to a master degree and atm a MSc in Economics seems to be my first choice. I say this because almost all econ programs offer the chance to gain a very good analytical preparation and data analysis is something that really fascinates me. Besides I would also like to deepen my economic tools, especially in macro/int. econ/industrial econ which I find very interesting, but also explore new fields of the subject. I couldn't find any other course as interesting as some of the Economics programs that I've looked up so far. My perplexities are twofold, namely that I feel like being admitted to one of these programs would be very hard for me, as my GPA is 3.10 (and I'm well aware that it's rather low), but these days I'm also starting to prepare for the GRE test, in order to improve my chances of admission. Moreover, even if I got admitted, I fear that the progrm itself could be very very difficult, especially "mathwise" (as I don't have too strong of a mathematical preparation but I'd be ready to work hard on it) and even though I (think) am very interested in economics and in data analysis, I'm still not so sure if I should consider something else. So guys, what I'm asking you is: do you think I might be a good fit for a MSc in Economics or should I change my plans? What kind of economics programs could I be admitted to with my GPA and a decent GRE score? Any suggestions for some unis? Thanks :)
  5. I've been waitlisted at my dream school (in US top 12), but was told through their letter that they generally let in most of their waitlist candidates. In the form for the visit day, I listed the other schools where I was admitted / waitlisted, but have since been accepted to two more schools, ranked slightly below my dream one. I plan on emailing the person of contact about my new acceptances, but want to emphasize that if I was admitted to their program, with funding, I would accept. What's the best way to go about this? Also how likely would an acceptance happen and would they release that on April 15 or earlier?
  6. Hi folks, I am recently admitted to the PhD program in Management at Louisianna State U. Will it be worth attending it? Most of its graduates ended up going to teaching schools. Should I reapply after I complete the master program so that I can be more competitive and get into better schools like u of maryland? I applied without a master degree and am admitted to the master program of public administration of State University of New York. The curriculum of this program has a few quant related courses. Would that help with PhD applications? Also, my GMAT score is a bit over 700. Would that be good enough if I want to apply to 2nd tier schools like maryland/umn? If not, how much should I have on GRE? (I am not gonna retake GMAT) Any thoughts? I'd really appreciate your kind help!
  7. Hi everyone, I found that U of T seems to eliminate the doctoral stream from their application website and I was told by them they no longer distinguish between doctoral and regular stream, but you can still choose phd courses if interested. But I saw on GC some people still post they are admitted to the doctoral stream. Does anyone receive an offer explicitly indicating you are admitted to the doctoral stream or just mention it as an option for you? And do you think MA at UofT is still a good choice if they no long have the doctoral stream. Thanks.
  8. Hi everyone. I got accepted to one of my top choices, and they've invited me to visit campus as part of their admitted students day. Unfortunately, the date is a pretty difficult conflict with a work deadline, so it's going to be really tough for me to make it. Do you think it's essential that I come on the admitted students day?
  9. Hi guys! Me and my friend have low verbal score. We know that verbal is not that important, yet our %tile is even lower than 30 & 40, that is why we wondered what are your experiences on that issue? Do you know anyone who was admitted to a good school ? If you do, how other qualifications of that person was like? Need to hear good things. Thank you for any comments.
