  1. Hi there, I am presently contemplating an offer from LSE for their MSc Econometrics and Mathematical Economics (EME) programme, which comes along with a conditional offer to the MRes/PhD programme should a distinction be attained for the EME programme. I would like to seek some advice on the following please: How is the quality of the course instruction/teaching for the EME programme? I have heard relatively negative feedback pertaining the MSc Economics programme in terms of the lack of guidance/support but would appreciate if views on the EME programme could be provided (and whether the lack of guidance/support is generally what one should expect in postgraduate programmes). Over the past few years, what has been the proportion of EME students attaining a distinction? Appreciate the advice!
  2. I'm a UK student, and in October I'll be starting my BA in History and Economics at Oxford. For those that are not familiar with the programme, I'll be able to take the same economics options as PPE and E&M students, but combining them with a few history courses rather than politics, philosophy or management. Although it's early, I have recently begun to consider an economics PhD, however I realise that my BA is not particularly quantitative. I'm hoping to apply to top 10-20 schools in the US, since funding is not so generous in the UK and the placement records of even the best programmes here aren't amazing. Would a good performance on a UK Master's programme at Oxbridge/LSE/UCL be sufficient to make up for my lack of maths background? What else could I do to demonstrate my quantitative skills? Thank you for your time :)
  3. Hi everyone, I'd be interested in your views of what odds my profile has of getting into a good programme. I graduated in 2011 and went to work in management consulting. One thing led to another and now it's 8 years later and I'm 30 and I still have a feeling like what I really want to do is research and teach. So I'm going back to do a MSc to see if I'm really serious about this, and then would like to apply for a PhD if I still feel the same way. My job has not been technical, but has been focused on banking regs and strategy, so potentially gets me some useful insights. I'm starting an MSc in Finance and Econ from a top European programme in 2 months. My questions are: - Assuming I do well in the masters, what are my odds of getting into a top ~20 finance programme? If it's quite unrealistic, I suppose I can give up and go back to the old sort of thing I did - Is there any point applying this cycle before the degree is done? I sort of feel like I'm already pretty old to spend another year RAing, but I guess it's needed.ProfileType of Undergrad: BSc economics from a top UK University (think Ox/Cam/LSE/Imp). But graduated 8 years ago. Undergrad GPA: 1st honours. Got firsts in all courses except 1 or 2 Graduate GPA: About to start MSc Finance & Econ from a top European programme GRE: Haven't taken it yet Math Courses: Real analysis, differential equations, multivariable calc. All 1sts (but 8-10 years ago) Undergrad econ couses: Micro, macro, applied econometrics, and public. All firsts except applied metrics Grad econ courses: to come: Micro, financial economics, financial econometrics, possibly macro, 2 electives Letters of Recommendation: I'll need to get some good ones from the MSc because I'm sure no one from undegrad remembers me. Can throw in one or two from work for good measure even if not that relevant Research Experience: Will be doing some RA work for one of the professors during the MSc. Otherwise nothing applicable so far. A few non-technical company publications, but irrelevant. Research interests: Empirical corp finance (particularly banking/credit), banking theory Teaching Experience: 1 year of TAing a class in undergrad in 2010 Work Experience: 7-8 years in management consulting for the financial services sector at a fairly prestigious firm [Cross-posted to PhD Econ forum - let me know if it shouldn't be here]
  4. Hello everyone! I have received an admission offer from Barcelona GSE for the M.Sc in Macroeconomic policy and financial markets program. The offer is partially funded, so I will have to spend 10000 euros + living expenses (1 year). As an international student, I need to get a clear idea of how would this programme help me in the future, that is, whether an investment worth it or not? Background: I am a Mathematics graduate from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and have worked as a research associate in the economics area at Indian Institute of Management (IIM). Both of these institutes are the best in the country and have an excellent international reputation. Through my work until now, I have garnered an enormous amount of interest in financial markets; I aspire to either work for international development institutions as a financial economist or as a global investment manager in international corporations. The concerns I have in mind are as follows: 1. Non-EU alumni placement information: It is not possible to figure out how non-EU students have fared after graduating from the Barcelona GSE website and resources. As a non-Spanish speaker, I want to know how the opportunities to find a job within the EU after this program are? As another poster @iitiim has mentioned before: "At the end of it, if I have to return to my home country, then I don't think I will be able to get a job that offers any significant raise from what I am currently earning, which basically means I will get no return on the investment." 2. Location of the programme: The programme takes place in the Bellaterra campus, and all other BGSE master's programmes take place in the Ciutadella, how does this affect the living experience (as I see networking one of the essential components)? Thanks for taking the time to read and reply! Cheers, notmyname
  5. Hey guys! Im michael, and i'd like your input on what is maybe the best route for me given my very particular interests and lack of experience with the American Academic sector. So, i Hold a Bsc in Economics with a minor in natural resources from a very good Latin american University, with a grade average of 7.8/10. I basically worked full time and studied at the same time.. all in all 2 years in government and 3 in private sector. Quit, it alll to become research assistant on environmental economics research for 6 months. Worked some more, and later got a full scholarship from the Ecuadorian Government to do an MSc in environmental economics and climate change at the London School of Economics. Loved it. graduated with a merit... did well on my exams but didnt do as amazing on my thesis, given that we had a MASSIVE earthquake in ecuador and my data failed to come thru, but hey i still did well. Took modules on valuation, and ecosystem services in the global south, besides quantitative methods, environmental economics and natural resource economics and climate change economics. Came back to Ecuador late 2016! designed a short course for my undergrad uni which i taught on climate change economics and local issues - so a 2 months teaching experience. By jan 2017 i joined the Charles Darwin research station for the Galapagos Islands as an Environmental Economist, doing research into 2 projects, one of them very linked to my masters dissertation. Im still working with them. Sept 2017 i shared preliminary results at the IMPAC4 conference through an oral presentation (international marine protected areas conference) - its an environmental economics paper that i hope to have published by the end of the year Oct 2017 awarded Youth Leadership of the Americas Initiative professional fellowship by the U.S State department (YLAI) for a sustainability project i co-wrote. Currently placed at University of Illinois at Chicago at the great cities institute for a month, and ill give some guest lectures. Probably will also give a guest lecture at the New School in NY next month before heading back to Galapagos, Ecuador. I am interested in doing a Phd in the States, and my initial thought and focus has been Duke, their UPEP programme... altho im not sure if i should maybe look into Econ PhDs that have an envrionmental option.. i know UCSB and UCDavis are good, San Diego too.. and obviously Berkeley but thats agricultural/natural resource economics. What about Yale? What about Stanford and their E-IPER programme? or Columbia and their Sustainable development programme? those are interdisciplinary like UPEP at Duke. And then.. im also thinking of public policy programmes in either the Keneddy school or at Harris.. I haven't done the GRE but i will prepare for it. My TOEFL score is 114 out of 120 and that was before LSE, im planning on retaking because it will expire by the time i apply. Where should I aim at given your expertise? Straight econ with environmental econ as my path ? Agricultural/resource econ? or interdiciplicary like Duke, Columbia and Stanford? or Public policy oriented at very rigorous schools? Also, realistically what are my chances? I have a very specialized CV but i am unaware if it'll be well received in the U.S universities. All the Best, Michael
