lawrencl
Scientists have trained their telescopes on Arp 229, a pair of merging galaxies, and saw stars exploding in numbers far greater than expected. A and saw stars exploding in numbers far greater than expected B and saw stars exploding in numbers far greater than they were expecting C and saw stars exploding in far greater numbers than expected D and seen stars exploding in far greater numbers than being expected E and have seen stars exploding in far greater numbers than expected OA E
bungholio
I prefer C over A because in C "far greater" empasizes the numbers. B is wordy and they seems ambigious D being expected is incorrect E incorrect tense... have trained.... and have been.
Rat
I vote for E. have trained... and have seen .... looks good to me. I prefer C over A because in C "far greater" empasizes the numbers. B is wordy and they seems ambigious D being expected is incorrect E incorrect tense... have trained.... and have been. bungholio, whats wrong with choice E? Can you please explain more? Thanks
bungholio
"have trained" is in past perfect tense... this action happened first and then the next action happened.. that is seeing the exploding stars. have trained and have seen say both actions happened in past but no way correctly indicate which action happened first. I believe " have trained" is in Present prefect tense. If this sentence were trying to talk about the actions happened in the past, it would use Past perfect and simple past. Am confused here about the timing of actions. But still vote for E.
bungholio
Rat, yes you are right, "have trained" is in present prefect tense. the scientists trained the telescope first and then saw the stars exploding.
shud
E should be correct. ..have trained.... and have seen.. a parallel construction. I don't think that construction like '...have seen ... and saw' will ever be correct. Besides, in this sentence action of seeing the star should follow the training. iknownoone
Scientists have trained their telescopes on Arp 229, a pair of merging galaxies, and saw stars exploding in numbers far greater than expected. A and saw stars exploding in numbers far greater than expected B and saw stars exploding in numbers far greater than they were expecting C and saw stars exploding in far greater numbers than expected D and seen stars exploding in far greater numbers than being expected E and have seen stars exploding in far greater numbers than expected OA E The verb tenses need to be consistent in the sentence. I'd go with "E" since both "have seen" and "have trained" would be in the present perfect tense.
