  1. Hello Everybody Can anyone please tell me what is this % Below column in Official GRE Score? Does it mean we are among those many people? or does it mean those many percent people are below us? thanks, Tyro
  2. 65. "People have been so encouraged by society to focus on apparent differences that they fail to see meaningful similarities among ideas, individuals, and groups." [dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance] The author states that people have been so encouraged by society to focus on apparent differences that they fail to see meaningful similarities among ideas, individuals and groups. I partially agree with the statement. We are living in the world of competition. Here everyone wants to prove him or herself different from others to attract the attention of people and eventually to succeed. Society plays the main role in this. It encourages the people to focus on differences than similarities. People want different ideas and new things everyday. At such front it is difficult to invent something new everyday. So people copy others ideas and put them forward as their own. But to show themselves different from others they have to exaggerate the differences so that other people of society will consider them different. For example there are so many soft drink companies in market. So if Coca cola wants to launch a new soft drink then they have to focus on advertising it by showing how it is different from other products. Otherwise people will not buy it thinking that it is same as other products. But while focusing on differences people are not so fool that they fail to see meaningful similarities among ideas, individuals and groups. They do notice the similarities also, for instance Pablo Picasso and George Braque's cubism paintings. People found Picasso and Braque's cubism slightly different but while noticing the differences they also noticed the similarities between their styles of paintings. Otherwise critics would not have mentioned that Picasso and Braque have similarity in cubism. However it is society, which makes us see the differences between different groups or different religions. Due to which people fail to see the meaningful similarities between ideas of different religions. This sometimes results into clashes between two religions. For example society made the Hindu's and Muslim's of Hindustan (Earlier name of India) to feel that they are different from each other and it lead to division of the Hindustan into two countries India and Pakistan. And people of both countries instead of seeing similarities between both religions focusing on differences and still fighting with each other, even after fifty years of independence. Recapitulating, it is due to today's competing world society encourage people to focus on apparent differences. But people are intelligent enough to see similarities also. But when it comes to different groups and different religions people focus more on differences and fail to see meaningful similarities between ideas of those groups or religions.

  4. Hello, My Exam date is after 7 days. Can anyone please rate my essay? [dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance] [blue]Author states that the Computer Chip Factories in Eliot Valley Region are causing water pollution and low water levels in the reservoirs and lakes. But to provide his statement he has not provided sufficient evidence. The first assumption author has made is water pollution is worse in the Eliot Valley Region because of the Computer Chip Factories. To support his statement he says that recent study shows the water pollution is worse than any other parts of country. But he is not stating whether the study covers the causes of water pollution or not. The study can be made only to find out the water pollution level. Unless the study chows the cause of water pollution is computer chip factory the author's statement that water pollution is caused due to computer chip factory is groundless. The second assumption author makes is that due to the use of large amount of water by computer chip industries the water levels are low in the lakes and reservoirs. But the reason of low water levels can be insufficient rainfall in last few years. Author has not mentioned of any study made to find out reasons of the low levels of water in lake and reservoirs. Unless such study is conducted the statement the water levels low because of large use water by computer chip industries remains baseless. Lastly author states that by limiting the amount of water supply to computer chip industry they can improve the quality of water. But by limiting the amount of water to the computer chip factories can increase the levels of water in lakes and reservoirs. How is that going to improve the quality of water? Author has not provided any cause-to-effect relationship to prove his statement that limiting the amount of water to factories will improve the quality of water. In summation, author should provide the evidence that study is conducted to find out the causes of water pollution and study shows that water pollution is worse in Eliot Valley region than any other part of country due to computer chip factories. Also to strengthen his argument that water levels are low because of large amount of water usage by computer chip factory he should provide the study conducted. Moreover he should provide the cause and effect relationship that how limiting the quantity of water supply to computer chip factories going to improve quality of water. [/dance]
  5. My exam is after 7 days. Can anyone please rate my essay? I will be very greatful to you. [dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance] "What society has thought to be its greatest social, political, and individual achievements have often resulted in the greatest discontent." ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For centuries our society has been achieving something or the other achievement. Such achievements have made our life easier to live than earlier. But sometimes some achievements have resulted into greatest discontent. The achievements, which are beneficial to everybody or to greater part of society has rarely caused any discontent, for example the achievement of World Wide Web. This achievement has more advantages and scarcely any disadvantages. It has made the communication between people fast and cost of such communication is affordable by almost all the society. Though sometimes the virus spread through the Internet cause discontent, it is negligible as compared to the advantages of it. Also the modern technology has made available many anti-virus softwares, which can protect our computers from the virus. The other examples of beneficial achievements we can see are telephone, aeroplane, different automatic equipments which can do the work of human being, automobiles etc. All these achievements have more beneficial results and hardly any disadvantages. Some of the individual achievements have been resulted into beneficial results for society, for example achievement of Mother Teresa. Mother Teresa worked for the poor and orphan children of slums of Calcutta. Her achievement has changed life of many poor children and thus has benefited the society. No one will say that this individual achievement has caused any discontent. However the political achievements cannot always be advantageous for everybody in the society. It is difficult to satisfy the whole nation at one time for the political leaders. Sometimes they have to take the decisions to achieve something. People may or may not be happy with such results. If people do not like the decisions of political leaders then the achievements caused by those decisions can result into discontent. For example the present Iraq and US war. Many of the US citizens were against the war. But Bush administration decided to go for war. They achieved success in banishing the Saddam Hussein from Iraq. But still people are discussing that government should not have gone for war instead they should have concentrated on internal problems like declining economical situation. Many people are unsatisfied with this achievement of Bush administration. It has resulted into greatest discontent among the citizens of United States. Sometimes the achievement, which can cause harm by misusing it, can result into greatest discontent. For example after the invention of nuclear weapons, when those were used on Hiroshima, the whole world mourned for the people of Hiroshima. The achievement of invention of nuclear weapons resulted into disaster than into energy source. It resulted into discontent among people of the whole world. Though all the achievement of society does not result into greatest discontent some of them may result into discontent. The achievements if misused then it may result into discontent. Also sometimes political achievements cannot make happy the people of the nation and can result into discontent.

  8. I am not satisfied with my essay because I could not think of any good points or any examples. Can anybody give me any suggestions regarding it? I have posted it here. 195 The goal of politics should not be the pursuit of an ideal, but rather the search for common ground and reasonable consensus. Author has stated that the goal of politics should not be pursuit of an ideal, but rather the search for common ground and reasonable consensus. But I think the goal of politics should be both to pursuit ideal as well as search for common ground and reasonable consensus. Everybody plays politics; it may be at different levels like at home or office or may be at state level or at national level or at international levels. Ordinary people will play in their everyday life while political leaders will play to show them as ideals and so to get more votes from public. But why do we need play politics? The first reason is; it is not possible to make happy everyone at one time. The decision, which we take, can be beneficial for few but it can be detrimental for others. In such situation those for whom it is beneficial will become happy while the others will become sad. At this time one should find out a moderate solution, which will be beneficial for everybody. Is it possible always? No. Then we play politics, we take a decision, which we consider is most favorable and pretend that we are not hurting anybody. Take an example of our everyday life. Suppose you are a development manager in a software company. Two software professionals, equally competent, report to you. Some new software has come. Company wants you to select one of those two professionals, so that they can send him abroad for training on new software. You know both software professionals are equally capable, talented. If you select one the other may think that you are in favor of former. Here you have to play politics to take a decision, which will not hurt any of the professionals. Because the hurt professional may leave the company thinking that he is not getting good opportunities and company will loose one very important resource. So in such cases the goal of the politics should be to search for common ground and reasonable consensus. However for politicians the goal of politics should be to pursuit ideal so that they can get more votes form public. Political leaders play politics to show themselves as ideals. People look at the political leaders as their ideals. People are always interested in the life of politicians. At such time if the political leader behaves eccentrically then it makes great impact on his career. To avoid this they have to play politics to show themselves as ideals. Moreover the followers of political leaders closely follow them in their behavior and also in their decision-making ways. So if a politician wants his followers to be good and ideals then he has to pursuit ideal. In summation, the goal of politics should be both to pursuit ideal as well as search for common ground and reasonable consensus. For different people the goal can be different.
  9. I think here politics is the government related politics. Or is it the everyday life's politics which people face in offices or in society? Any suggestions about this??? thanks, Tyro
  10. I have not yet taken my GRE but still I am commenting on your essay. Munni your essay is good in terms of ideas. but you have to properly arrange the paragraphs and the flow of essay. You are writing paragraphs of one line. One more thing you have mentioned dandi march etc about gandhi. but who will understand it. So do not mentioned such petty details. Try to mention something which the ETS writers will know. Also try to write some good conclusion. Your conclusion sounds weak. Thanks, Tyro
  11. A field contains infinite knowledge. how can we decide our boundries or limits?
  12. Can anybody share some points regarding following topic? I find this topic difficult to think. Thanks, Tyro
  13. Hello I think you have stressed on saying that there is truth in history. while you should choose wheather exploring history is objective pursuit or creative enterprise. Here I think one should understadn the difference between objective pursuit and creative enterprise. What I felt is Objective Pursuit - Tell objective (Remember what is subjective and objective. subjective will be biiiiigggg theory and objective will be points.) Creative Enterprise - Telling biiiiiigggg interesting story and not the objective details of history Any comments please whether I construe it correctly or not. Thanks, Tyro
  14. Hello Sonali, Here are comments from me. (In Red) You are saying history not only useful for daily life but gives inspiration and lessons of life. Which I think is one and the same. Thanks, Tyro
  15. Dear Everybody, I got the official guide but i could get the 9th Edition. Can anyone tell me is there much difference between 9th and 10th edition? Do I have to buy 10th edition? I could not get it, may be will need to search more. Thanks, Tyro
  16. 087 In any field of inquiry, the beginner is more likely than the expert to make important discoveries. I am writing what I understood here. Can anybody please tell me is it right? In any field of inquiry -- Here it means in whichever field it is inquired (almost all) Right? Invention - Finding something new that which is not exist. For e.g. Invention of aeroplane, Invention of Radium by Mary Curie. Discovery - Finding something new that which is exist but not known. For e.g. Discovery of some new caves or new planet or galaxy etc I believe beginner can invent because it is something new which noone knows. So this beginner guy has started working on something and he invents it. But he cannot be called expert as that thing is newly invented. Expert will discover. Because to discover something one should have at least some knowledge(as he should know what he wants to find out). Exception archeological discoveries. Any comments please. Thanks, Tyro
  17. [dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance][dance] Any critics ? The author claims that there is no such thing as purely objective observation; all observations are subjective, those are guided by the observer's expectations or desires. I will say that the statement is partly true because there are objective observations. There are few observations, which can be called objective observations. The observations, which can tell what is exactly there, are called objective observations. For example Newton observed the falling apple and he discovered the law of gravitation. He expressed that, as force is equal to mass into acceleration. He could exactly tell, what that observation is by expressing into exact scientific terms. The same observation we can express in non-scientific terms or in subjective form to a layman as "the apple fell down because it has weight and this applies to all other things which has weight". At least the layman will understand what weight is because he can fill the weight when he lifts something. So he will understand the things which has weight will fall down. Objective observations describe what is there, as perceived without distortion by personal feelings, prejudices or interpretations. Subjective descriptions can include personal judgments, interpretation, and feelings. For instance, a group of people is looking at a still life painting of Picasso in an art gallery. When they will be asked what did they see in the painting? Some of them will tell what they exactly saw but some of them will tell the way their mind observed it. The later observers will tell the things their mind perceived with their personal judgments, interpretations and feelings. Objective observations can be expressed in subjective form but all subjective observations cannot be converted into an objective form. Sometimes our mind gets an abstract view of what we are observing. Such abstract view we cannot put into exact phenomenon. But the things, which we can put into exact phenomenon, we can explain those using simple language also. Einstein had said "All the physical theories ought to lend themselves to so simple a description that even a child could understand them." For years science has been facing the dilemma of objective and subjective observations. There are few laws of nature, which scientists could not convert into purely scientific terms. So the contemporary science adopted the subjective observations. As per contemporary science the universe we live is both subjective and objective. In summary, some observations are objective. But all the objective observations can be converted into subjective observation. But all subjective observations cannot be objective observation. So we can say there is no such thing as purely objective observation as one may debate; the observations, which are objective, are subjective also.

  19. The author claims that even when a nation's economy is weak, drugstores' profits are unlikely to decline appreciably. While consumers might put off some kinds of purchases when the economy is slow, prescription and over the counter drug purchases are dictated by consumers' health needs, which are independent of the economy. Therefore Medicine Inc. is likely to continue to have increasing profits and should plan to open an additional drugstore next year. At first sight the claims looks plausible but the examination from different angles makes it hallow. The business analysts for drugstore industry have stated that even when a nation’s economy is weak, drugstores' profit are unlikely to decline appreciably. But they have not mentioned any assumptions on the base of which they are making such claims. Have they studied any such situation which occurred in past? What makes them make such a hasty conclusion? To strengthen their claim they should provide the evidence of any study, which they have done depending on which they are claiming. It may be true that the consumers' health needs are not related to economy. But to purchase the health products or medicines one needs money. If the economy is slow then people will not have sufficient money. In such case if they do not have sufficient money to spend on drugs then certainly they will not buy those. That means the economy is affecting the sale of drugs also. Author should have provided some examples of why he is claiming that consumers' health needs are not related to economy and slow economy will not reduce the sales of drugs. These business analysts also states that medicine Inc. should plan to open and additional drugstore next year as it is likely to have increasing profit. Here the author should have provided that evidence of study made by them to show that profit is likely to increase. If the profit is not increasing then what is the point in opening new drugstore? To strengthen the argument the study showing proof that the profit will increase is required. In summation, the claim lacks to create an impact on the readers because of its shallowness. To strengthen the claim the author should have provided the evidences discussed above.
  20. Author states that ten years ago, as part of a comprehensive urban renewal program, the city of Transopolis adapted for industrial use a large area of severely substandard housing near the freeway. Subsequently, several factories were constructed there, crime rates in the area declined, and property tax revenues for the entire city increased. To further revitalize the city, we should now take similar action in a declining residential area on the opposite side of the city. Since some houses and apartments in existing nearby neighborhoods are currently unoccupied, alternate housing for those displaced by this action will be readily available. At first sight the argument looks plausible but the thorough analysis proves it to be a shallow conclusion. Here author assumes that the new area, which is at the other side of city, has the same environmental and physical conditions as that of the area, which they adapted ten years ago for industrialization. For Industrialization the basic requirements like adequate land, water supply, electricity and the most important one are transportation facility should be available. The area, which Transopolis adapted ten years ago, is near freeway. That means it is on the way for the transportation. To strengthen the argument author should provide the proof that the new area, which is at the other side of city has same facilities available as that of the area, which they adapted ten years ago. The second assumption made by author is the crime rate declined due to factory constructions and industrialization. Here if author gives the proof how the industrialization really affected to crime rate declination then it will strengthen the argument. Probably author can provide the statistics of what was earlier crime rate and what is present crime rate. The third claim author makes is the property tax revenues increased for the entire city. The property tax revenue increase can be by other reasons also like new facilities provided to citizens like good schools, good shopping complexes, due to which may people are interested in staying in that city which resulted in the increased property tax revenue. The evidence stating that the property tax revenue increased for the entire city only because of the industrialization of the area ten years ago will strengthen the argument. In summation the author has stated the argument without providing sufficient evidences and proofs. The evidences discussed above should be provided to strengthen the argument.
  21. Hello nsoonhui, I do not understand why are you writing about companies. I feel in your essay first paragraph is not at all required. You are saying the topic statement is wrong. The topic statement is not wrong, I think you misconstrue it. it is saying people who make important contribution are not those who implement their new ideas but those who perceive talents and coordinate skills of others. One should write what he feels. Whether those who develop new ideas make important contribution or those who are good coordinators and perceivers of others talents make important contribution. Or ealse you can be on fence, can say both make important contributions in way or the other way, what is important is to make contribution not by which means. (means here is "where developing new idea or coordinating) Thanks, Tyro
  22. Hello Everybody, I have a biggggggg doubt. Can we introduce some new view in our essay which is not discussed in issue but is related to topic. For Ex. In the following topic it is said "only by being forced to defend an idea against doubt or contrasting views of others does one really discover the value of that" Here I am saying sometimes by arguing on the idea and sometimes by implementing the idea, one really discover or realizes the value of that. Is it OK to write so. I have posted my topic, you can check what I am writing and give your opinions. Thanks, Tyro 8 "Only by being forced to defend an idea against the doubts and contrasting views of others does one really discover the value of that idea." A human mind conceives ideas. These ideas have its value. One has to realize the value of his or her idea. Sometimes people do not realize the value of idea when they conceive it, but they realize after arguing about it with others, after defending doubts and contrasting views of others. Sometimes they realize the value not by arguing but by implementing the idea. Every person tries to prove that his point is true. When we discuss our ideas with others, we get both positive and negative responses. Few people admire our idea while few of them oppose it. The people who oppose the idea are the one who criticizes it. Such people make us to think more about the idea. Sometimes we come across some points, which did not strike us. People contradict our views. We need to contradict their view to prove our idea. This causes us to actually realize the idea. For example in last week I thought I should change the arrangement of my house in such way that it will look commodious without throwing the old furniture. But when I discussed it with my husband and children they were not ready for it. Because they were very much used to for few things to be at certain place. They could not think of not having those things at their places. To prove my point I had to argue with them, contrast their views. That time I realized it is such a mess in my house that it has to be cleared. So here I first just thought of the idea. But I really realized after arguing with my husband and kids. Sometimes it needs one to implement the idea to realize the value of it. There is a quotation by Thomas A. Edison "The value of an idea lies in the using of it.” For example many filmmakers just think of some idea to make the film. That time they do not realize whether the movie will be box office hit or not. But after the completion of movie when they actually launch the film and it hits the box office, they realize the value of their idea. If you ask those producers or directors they say, they wanted the movie to make good business but they did not think that it would be a box office hit. That means they discovered the value of their idea after implementing it. To sum up, I would say many people discover the value of their idea by arguing on it, by contrasting views and doubts of others. The healthy debate on the idea brings many issues in picture which at the first sight we cannot realize. While sometimes they discover the value of idea after actually implementing it.
  23. Thanks blue2sail, You have really foudn out the biggest flaw of my essay. I think I should reqrite the essay. Thanks once again. Also Thanks juliahuang for commenting and your important suggestions. I am poor in writing and so not using much complex sentences. Thanks Tyro
  24. Hello KFree Thanks for the comments. You have pointed the greatest mistake I made in using arbiter :). I should have used autocrats. I read my essay and I realised the points which you are pointing at. Yes I am focussing more on success than on "very few know how to make best use of it" Thanks a lot. So did you write on this topic. Please do post wfter you finish writing I would like to read your essay. Thanks once again. Tyro ** arbiter = judge, I don't think this is the word you want here. You want something like "Leader" only to have a neutral term ("leader" is more positive than negative.) Perhaps "ruler" will do since ruler can be good or bad.
