  1. I would go for E here . As per the question stem changes in tax code are required to encourage savings . However since "decreasing percentage of the United States is under 40, an age when savings are traditionally low" changes in the tax code would not be that helpful thereby weakening the arguement .
  2. I too went for D here. But there is an interesting catch here and that is "We should not assume anything" .In the link that Crazygmatter gave ,I think the comment of Bose has some merit (@bose : we do not know anything that will happen when light is flashing) .keeping this in mind and as we should not assume anything I feel C should be the right answer .
  3. Completely agree with shooter .I too went for D .
  4. good question ! I too fell for C
  5. I think 0 is neither a positive nor a negative number .
  6. @effective_factor : We want to know why the newly discovered treatises lend no support to the attribution of Lacrimae to Pescard ! As we scroll through the options ,D says "the later treatises probably had no source for their attribution other than the earlier treatise" . This means that their is no new evidence provided by the newer treatise as they relied on the older one as their source .So this logically completes the sentence .
  7. How about C ? In the question stem : "And in the past, when the pie was still growing, management could afford to acquiesce" Now C says that since the population is increasing the absolute value of economic pie is also increasing !! Hence the share of the labor workers ought to increase accordingly.
  8. I feel D should be the answer . Basically the author wants to prove that increasing taxes is not the only method to reduce Governments debt .Another option is to sell uranium which currently is worth 25% more than the current market price .And by selling Uranium government can not only pay its debt but also reduce its overall debt as well .But for this what needs to be true ??? That this does not depress the market rates of helium else it will not solve the intended purpose .
  9. Agree with you makumajon ,actually I went a little too far in trying to be more clear :)
  10. Q36: Is (ac/bd)>(c/b) ? Now here since all are positive integers we can rewrite the above equation as Is a/d > 1 ? A. This information is now redundant . B tells us that a>d ,hence sufficient enough . Note : We cannot perform division and multiplication operations on equalities until and unless we are sure about the signs . Also since they are integers ,we can safely assume that a/d >1 .
  11. Q5: Here A. |x + 1| = 2 |x – 1| Here the value of x comes out to be either 1/3 or 3 . Try the four possible cases . (for ex : -(x+1) = 2(x-1) or (x+1) = -2(x-1) or -(x+1) = -2(x-1) or (x+1) = 2(x-1) ) Here we are not sure what the value x can be ,so insufficient . B This tells us that the value of x is not equal to 3. But that does not help .Insufficient . Combining them we know that the value of x has to be 1/3 .Hence the ans is C .
  12. Tough one .Its a close call between B and E .However ,I feel that the ans needs to be E . Say for example ,agreed that as per B the results of the survey can be taken as a reliable estimate ...but what if say only 20 percent of those 59 percent of the registered voters turn out to vote ,and all the remaining 41% of the voters favor the ruling party .In that case the ruling party will stay .So we need to make sure first that all the registered voters come to vote .Otherwise even if we consider B to be true ,it wont help much .
  13. Was confused between C and E .However,as far as conclusion is concerned ,after reading the stem ,I came to the same conclusion as in C . B can be discarded because the stem also says that "Microbial life has been found in bedrock more than five kilometers below the surface of the Earth".So the conclusion as in B is not complete .
  14. Actually gmatcraze ,this is based on the formula : a^2+b^2 = (a+b)^2-2ab. Now substitute a = 3^x and b = 3^-x (or 1/(3^x) ) into the above equation . 3^x and 1/(3^x) cancel out each other ,hence we see only 2 being added at the end .
  15. Evan reads 60pages/hour ,so by 1:00 he must have read 30 pages .Now by 2:00pm Evan and Marla must have read 90(60+30) and 80 pages respectively .So we can neglect options A,B and C .In the next half an hour Evan will read 30 pages (90+30 ) and Marla will read 40 (80+40) pages .So by 2:30 both of them will be at page 120 . Hence the Ans is D .
  16. B doesn't make much sense to me ! I too will go for C .
  17. I will go for A here . I was confused between A and C ,but then I chose A because we need to compare interaction of gravity waves with matter to interaction of electromagnetic waves with matter . In C it seems interaction of gravity waves to matter is compared to electromagnetic waves.
  18. I searched the net and here is what I got .I am directly pasting the explanation : This is an odd one. Curious as to the original source (before 1000). Sentence core: Building X would constitute a wasteful use of Y, (modifier). Meaning: Building X would be wasteful, at the very least because of one particular reason. (It's not the only reason, but it's a large enough reason that it is sufficient all by itself as a reason not to build. C changes the meaning - it indicates that the duplicated facilities thing is the ONLY reason why it would be wasteful, but that's not the original meaning. Eliminate. D also changes the meaning. The modifier is supposed to be a reason why building is wasteful. The use of "while" here seems to be introducing a new general piece of info, not providing that piece of info as a reason not to build. A's modifier has multiple prepositional phrases in a row. That's often a warning sign on this test - the GMAT writers generally prefer to avoid 3+ prepositional phrases in a row. The placement of the word "alone" also is a bit problematic. Logically, we know they're trying to say "for this reason alone" but just that word alone could also be interpreted to mean "facilities alone" - as in, facilities by themselves, with nothing else around them. Finally, the "alone" part of the meaning here is a key part of what ties the main clause to this modifier: X is wasteful, and one reason for this is Y. So it would be better to have the "alone" language between the two - if we have that as an option in one of the choices. B has many of the same problems as A. But take a look at E. It moves the "alone" meaning (but changed to "if only because") to the beginning of the modifier. And it make the remaining meaning very clear. Why is this wasteful? At the very least, because duplication should be avoided. Building X would constitute a wasteful use of Y, if only because Z. So my pick would be E.
  19. Still not able to understand whats wrong with B .
