  1. There is nothing to get offended about in GMATBong's post. If you have the patience to go back and check GMATBong's previous post, you'll know what his credentials are, and how he is helping the MBA community here. If you are so sensetive to feedback, why post at all? Why don't you put the topic's heading as "I am posting my profile. I know there is nothing wrong with it. I don't like advice"!! Dude, this is a nice helpful community here. Learn its ways first!
  2. Well, if you are sure that you want to be in the manufacturing related field post - MBA, then MMM is a better option. You get two degrees at the cost of one(MBA + MS). I spoke to an Indian MMM student yesterday, and according to him, some companies put a premium to hire MMM students. But before applying, do bear in mind that there are only 50-60 seats available in the MMM versus the 400 odd seats in the MBA. Btw, you need to have a manufacturing background if you are thinking of applying. GmatBong, How does Kellogg treat younger applicants? Are they anywhere comparable to H/S? What is Wharton's take on this issue?
  3. People who are planning on applying to Fall 2007, join " sept2007intake " on Yahoo Groups. Checked out sept2006intake and sept2005intake groups. They were good. Maybe sept2007intake will be better
  4. Satya, you just arent your GMAT score + College you studied in + GPA. There is much more to the application process. What are your hobbies? What are your interests? What are your achievements apart from making to REC, Trichy? Tell us more about it! For all you know maybe you can get into one of the top 10 B Schools..:)
  5. I recently had been to a reception hosted by Chicago GSB in my hometown. There was this alumnus who said that each B-School has its own character and adviced all the of us, who were attending the reception, to check before enrolling whether our character and that of the B-School match. When I asked him about the ways in which I could find out "the character" of the B-School without actually visiting it, he said that this can be done by talking to the alumni. He said that after some experience, you'll actually know if you are talking to a Wharton graduate/ a Chicago Graduate / Stanford Graduate. Is this true?????
  6. Thanks for the info GMATBong. Erin, who do you think is more popular - you or GMATBong? ;)
  7. Hello GMATBong, I shall be applying for the fall 2007 program. So I have one year more to go before I start applying. I thought the maximum number of schools that I could apply for is 6. So, I am a little curious as to how someone would manage to apply to 10 schools. Do you split schools round wise or apply for R-1 to all of them? Please tell me more about this. Can you also tell us the # of schools that you applied to and which tiers they belonged to, if you dont mind? Regards, Maelstrom
  8. Hey Amit, I had been to a reception hosted by Chicago GSB last week. The Assistant Dean who had come over, told us not to worry about the conversion at all. She said that they know how difficult it is to score high percentages in India and they'll do the conversion for the applicant, by comparing the applicant's % with other similar applicants' %s - both past and present. If I were you, I would fill in --NA--. You will be sending them the transcripts anyway; so why bother? - Maelstrom
  9. Hi Mariachi, I have heard a lot about Said. But not much about Warwick. Cranfield and Manchester are supposed to be OK. But I am not a pro myself. I think you should post this Q on BusinessWeek Forums. There are a lot of knowledgable people there who are willing to help you. I dont think you need to pay anything to access the BW forums. - Maelstrom
  10. Hey Mariachi, Congrats on your score. With your unique background, I think schools will be more than ready to talk to you. So I think you should be aiming a bit higher. How about LBS and Said? - Maelstrom
  11. I agree with Chimni. You say you hit the 700s in the PP before working on OG. Your actual score should have been there abouts. You say you are weaker in Quant than compared to Verbal. But your Quant seems to have remained consistent and your verbal has dropped down. So either you were over confident with the verbal part ( believe me, this can happen. I committed this folly ) or you were plain tired when you were approaching the end of the test. If it was the former then when you retake, everything should be fine. If it was the latter then you need to build up your test taking stamina by taking more tests. Nothing to worry about. You'll do well the next time. Best of luck!
  12. I dont see the split up here. I think people can advice you better, if you can post it here.
  13. Now that you have already been to the US, I think getting a F-1 will be a lot easier.
  14. Hey Jax, I feel that 690 is enough. The average GMAT scores of the top 5 .i.e.. if you consider H/S/W/C/M as the top 5, ranges between 711 and 695. So you are in the ballpark. Being a US citizen, I think you have an advantage. Retake the test only if you are confident that you can bump up the score by atleast 30 - 40 points. Instead of wasting time, I would suggest you strenghten other parts of your application. For example, your extra - curriculars seem to be your weak point. Yes, granted that you have been a teaching assistant and a research assistant, but do they qualify as extra - curriculars? I am not sure...Of course, I might be wrong as I come from the other side of the planet. Other than that everything else seems fine. :)
  15. Thanks for the reply GMATBong. I have a couple of quick questions if you dont mind answering them. 1. GMATBong, you asked me to apply to H/S this year. But the main problem is I have changed jobs recently. I will have been an entrepreneur for less than 6 months if I apply to R-2. So I think it will be be difficult to “prove” that I have the heart of an entrepreneur after only a few months. Will I lose my age advantage if I apply to H/S next year? ( I will be 23 this August ) 2. Will publishing economic papers help? Or is my time better spent doing something else? I posted this question on BW. But I am not getting consistent answers. While Linda says it may help, Alex says it wont. Sandy even went to the extent of saying that the adcoms may look at me as a confused person who really doesnt know what he wants to do. Please help.
  16. CEIBS is in the list. McCombs is not. Purdue is not. The British are crazzzy!
  17. GMATBong, what are the chances of me getting into 1. U of Chicago 2. CMU 3. Purdue? I want to specialize in General Management with a manufacturing + techno touch. Do these school s have a "special liking" towards youngesters like H/S? To answer your question from the previous post, I was ranked 9/157 in the class. Aggre - 84%. Was ranked 65 among the 30,000 odd people who took up the Karnataka CET exams when I wrote. Thanks for the help!
  18. I have been following the BW posts from the past couple of weeks. From what I have learnt, the earlier you apply, the better your chances are. Its just an urban legend that people are repeating when they say that your chances are better in R2 than in R1.
  19. Hi All, Here is my profile:- Education - Computer Science and Engineering ( Non - IIT ) good GPA Pursuing Master in Business Law course ( distance education program ). Work Experience - Worked for a Software MNC as a software developer for almost a year. Actively took part in recruiting; was also given a medal for my recruiting prowess Quit my job recently to help manage a small factory that a cousin of mine is starting. We are starting work on ISO certification of the plant now. The switch from software was done basically to differentiate myself from the Indian IT crowd. Moreover I plan to specialise in enterpraunership and I thought the factory experience would prove valuable in the long run. GMAT score - 720 Volunteer experience - Worked on a databse project for a governement hospital. Teach destitute children on weekends. Extra - Curriculars - Have been playing the sitar from a few years. Have played once on AIR, But havent done anything spectacular. Here are my questions :- 1. With no "wow-factors" on my resume, will I be competitive in B-Schools ranked 15 - 30 ( McCombs, Georgetown, Uni of Southern Cali ) 2. I plan to apply for the 2006 fall program. By then I will have only 2 years of work experience. Is this too less? Should I wait for one more year and apply in 2007? Thanks in advance. - Maelstrom

Was actively involved in recruiting. Also got a medal for my recruiting prowess ( ). - Currently helping a family member setup power electronics business. Am part in-charge for the day to day working of the factory. Working on getting ISO 9000 and UL approval for the plant.( Thanks for the advice you gave me. I made the switch. I am loving every minute of it! ) Extra - Curricular Activities - Have been playing music from the past few years. Have given programs ( including one on State Radio ). Volunteer Work - Have started working for CRY - Have taught software programming course in my Alma mater. I plan to apply for Fall 2006 ( shall have 2 yrs work exp) to the following schools:- 1. McCombs 2. Georgetown 3. Maryland ( Smith ) 4. SDA Bacconi, Milan 5. Purdue I want to specialize in entrepreneurship. Post MBA I want to come back to India and get involved in "Manufacturing" outsourcing. Do I stand a chance of getting into these schools? I majored in Computer Science and Engineering; but my future plans as of now, are not related to IT. Will this be a drawback? Should I wait one more year and apply for fall 2007 ( 3 years of work exp )? Do let me know what you think. Thanks.
  21. Sir, You are an inspiration to all of us. We are lucky to have you as a member of this Forum. Keep it up Mister. I just checked out your earlier msgs. You seem to be thinking of an MS as well. Are you sure you are who you say you are and you are not misleading the innocent folks here? Thanks, Maelstrom
