  1. Same here, doodes.. :( I'm waiting for UMTC, MSU and Vandy (MS in CS). All the best to all of us, hopefully some good admits will come. If they do, I guess even the fact that you were waitlisted in the beginning would not matter much, the end justifying the means.. :) right? best, Attraxion.
  2. That's not what I was talking about.. one can make sense rationally and not racially
  3. Pretty bugging racist, if you ask me.. do you regularly choose universities on the basis of what illiterates in your city are saying about it? And what about all the professors that are working hard and doing great research in a univ? Don't respect Indians and Chinese but at least respect those guys.. best, Attraxion.
  4. I've applied for MS CS. My friend was for PhD.
  5. One of my friends got a reject last week. I'm waiting, too, and haven't heard. When I mailed them (around 10 March) they said we will notify you on email as soon as we decide. best, Attraxion.
  6. are you guys talking about the Informatics department? I thought CS deptt was merged with Informatics in Indiana? And BTW, where is Indiana in the top-30? As far as I know, Indiana CS was ranked 42 in USNEWS 2002 and hasn't been given any rank (supposedly because of merger with informatics) in 2006.
  7. Hi, I've received the same letter from UIC (MS in CS). Admitted and being considered for aid. I think I might join it. I am somehwat inclined towards Chicago as it is a large city as well as a big univ where chances of funding are said to be good after joining. Admits - WUSTL (no aid), Indiana (2000$ waiver), UIC (being considered) Rejects - JHU (PhD), Penn State (PhD), Wisc Madison, UMass, Maryland (all MS) best, Attraxion.
  8. Thanks for your replies, pals.. Hi Ivo, good to hear from you again, I was totally out due to a big attack of typhoid.. spent almost a month in complete bed rest, doing nothing.. even now they don't let me eat many good things :) Thanks for all the praise, but you know my acad record is very average. Still, I'm hoping I will get at least a couple decent admits. I'll work my way up to my aim in life from there, PhD or no PhD.. Great to hear about your recent accomplishments, congo !! RS and Mir, I forgot to mention that I had applied for the Informatics program at IUB (which is not the same as CS). You guys would have different situations. Call them up and ask if your reviews are done. Maybe its only the informatics ones that are done. Shoaib, this program (Informatics) is not in the usnews rankings because it is one of a kind. As regards CS, I think IUB is ranked in the 40s. best, Attraxion.
  9. @Klop, you mention the possibilities of shifting to a PhD from the MS, but what do you think of my chances of landing it in the first place? Please refer to the wording of the email again... @mir_d, I got the information via e-mail on Thursday night (thursday morning for USA)... did u apply for PhD or MS? if PhD, call / email them and enquire, they have (as you can read from the email) finished reviews. If MS, wait for a while, they are (as you can read from the email) still reviewing.. best, Attraxion.
  10. Hi All, After weeks of waiting and becoming utterly frustu, I finally got something to hear. Not good news, though. It goes like this - I wrote back and said yes. Is this a routine procedure in universities, asking for MS if not worth PhD? Or would this be typical of Indiana? Can I make anything of my chances for MS here? You know, I am tending to think, unless they thought I was good for MS why would they bother and waste their time? So maybe I will get MS here... Please tell me what you think. best, Attraxion.
  11. hey, thanks (a bit early but I'd rather do it now) :)
  12. Not yet :( I'm bogged down in a lot of things, semester exams, thesis work and stuff, and I'm getting very late... but I'll post my first packets by dec 5 (which is also, incidentally, my Bday :)) It won't be an early application to be sure, but at least I'll get time to make it good (I hope) Hows it with you? best, Attraxion.
  13. I'd second that, Ivo, when you're not "using" Fulbright, don't mention it too.. best, Attraxion.
  14. Nice thread guys.. Wish all of you all the best.. BTW, Michigan and the lakes suit me fine, although they're a bit cold.. best, Attraxion.
  15. Hi Guys, The exam did not seem to be too tough, if anything I rued the fact that I hadn't practised Graph Theory and Algos too well. I attempted 53 questions. Sure of around 35 and the rest educated (2-3 eliminations guesses). What score would you say I'll get? best, Attraxion.
  16. Okay guys, really nice and useful thread this.. another one.. I heard that including a copy of your GRE/TOEFL score reports in the packet is always advisable, to reconfirm and also for the worst case when ETS goofs up. But both the score reports have a section where they list the 4 univs you chose at the time of testing. What do I do if I don't want to let this known to the univs (there was a thread recently about "what other schools you're applying to").. Should I, uh, put a paper over that area and then xerox the page? or should I not bother about the "other schools should be carefully told" and send then as they are? best, Attraxion.
  17. Arre yaar, better take the GRE first.. why do you say you have a pathetic profile? I think you're pretty cool yourself. Just get more than 85% on all GREs and you can get into the top 30 schools.. BTW, I'm from MNNIT Allahabad... best, Attraxion.
  18. Hi, I'm afraid I cannot tell you anything about DC, my area of interest being Artificial Intellegence. You just have to look at univ websites and find out research area.. And yes, your AWA (AWM?) can affect admission, 3.5 is quite a low percentile. I suggest you don't app to those who specifically say "we are looking at more than itna itna percentile on all sections of GRE as a minimum requirement (not average scores, mind you)".. best, Attraxion.
  19. Ya, and keep it short, students who are writing their own recos tend to write epics.. keep it no more than 6-8 sentences... chuck out words (they will invariably come up in your first draft) like brilliant, extraordinary etc etc best, Attraxion.
  20. Hey Ivo, I was waiting for your reply to my last mail (the second view). How did your things go, finally? Submitted? Guys, I'm not getting any pointed replies (preferably from CS seniors), and deadlines are fast approaching... would you all suggest I PM some of them (such as ritwik) and give them the link to this thread? Would they be okay with it? best, Attraxion.
  21. Hey, I like that "heck who cares" attitude :)... it is really needed sometimes, in the quest of your apping process... Shiv, you should post more of your profile such as grades, research experience etc for a better appraisal... best, Attraxion.
  22. Hey guys, I second asphalt and cri.. Shoaib, you don't need at all to take the GRE again.. first, you score is quite good (esp 790 in quant) and more on verbal doesn't really make a big difference in engg programs.. and second, reading the posts here you must have gotten the idea that GRE does not count for much anyways... The CS program at Wisc does not have the pre-screening, as you said... try it out if it suits you.. otherwise just go ahead and app in the ECE thing.. Would also like some replies to my final list, thanks :( best, Attraxion.
  23. Hey, you guys... thanks a lot for good replies, and it's nice to hear from you again, asphalt.. how is your thing going, about to finish? I'm quite enouraged by your posts, especially since somebody at another forum (edulix) told me I'm apping too high and "no univ is safe for a PhD", so I should come down to univs ranked ~60-70 or so. But the thing is, I don't really want to "just get into america somehow" and that's why univs below ~50 I'm not terribly keen on. I do have research and papers but the problem is that they're at what you would call a "local level", only one paper is under international review (don't know how it'll end up), the rest are all in college events. I am not yet sure on how to mention my research impressively and succinctly in the SoP. Pointers appreciated on that, too. Shoaib, I'd second what Asphalt says about wisc, in my opinion too (I've been through with the pre-screening) it is a guiding principle and not a rule. Mail the grad assistant. More replies wanted, please, esp from CS guys... best, Attraxion. PS: Shoaib, can you give me the link to the pre-screening page at Wisc? I wanted to have a look at it again (for second thoughts on its importance) but stupidly I can't find it now...
  24. What I meant is - It would be better if you did not tell us how you felt about your own profile (things like "enough work in the past to flout..." or "a killer reference") but told us factual details, like what research experience you have, who has given you a good reco and what has he written, etc... best, Attraxion.
  25. are these stats for the entire grad school or for CS? By the way, I've heard that Upenn gives MS admits (without aid) rather freely.. can anyone comment on the probability of landing up a job after paying for, say, a semester.. if it exists, maybe I can app for MS there... I need big big replies from people fast... wanna get over with this by Sunday.. please best, Attraxion.
