  5. There were a few links available on the site for free dowbnload of the GAS tests...I had taken the 800 tets also but definitely think the GAS tests are much better
  6. Can anyone tell me how long does it tke to receive the official score.. I had taken the test on 8th aug yet to receive the official score,, Hey Erin,, can we hv a forum specially for discussing the admission strategy for fall 2006..
  7. Hey All !! thanks for ur wishes.. as I said the disappointment was transitional as I believed that I could score more . Initially thought was not to post my debriefing as I hvn’t cracked a gr8 score but then I thought an exam score shouldn’t stop me form giving back whatever I have learnt during the process.... This exam has been a learning and humbling experience for me. There were many things that I have learnt going through the ordeal in the last three months and would like to share with all, and sincerely hope if it helps even one person to better the score by a few points, I will consider it as a personal victory :) To start with …the initial plan.. I was never sure that I wanted to take this exam.. ..then over a cup of coffee with a friend realized that I need to improve my skill sets in finance if I intend to head independently any venture in future and then from their made my first target when to give the exam and what’s the min score I need….so the first learning… Be sure why u want to take the exam and what u need from the exam to achieve your end. Once I was clear about taking the exam , the next step was to plan the right strategy towards achieving the goal…there will always be enough and more people to advise you on the best way to prepare , more often than not we get tempted to replicate the starategy of the high achievers ( thinking the strategy is the cause for the score not realizing it could be the consequence of their dovetailing their abilities to their goal )..So my learning was …Plan for urself , what u need and what given the time constraint is the best strategy FOR U ..donot blindly replicate someone else’s strategy..to facilitate this process be active participants in forums..well I can vouch for Testmagic as one of the best..read all but takeout whats relevant for you. Spend the first two weeks doinf extensive research on the net …the net outcome of this should be a daywise plan for urself till the dday… Prep: Most of us after the research stage will be aware of the best shortlist of books and materials to use during the prep . Take a few part test of actual retired GMAT ( the paper tests ) and make a note of your strength and weakness ( this should be done before the final daywise plan is drawn). For quant make a small note for you that definitely cover the following areas: Number theory Inequalities and absolute value Set theory Basics of Probability and counting theory Key areas of Geometry ( special right triangles, exterior / interior angles, and quadrilaterals) Learning : Make sure to use the rule of 7 for all DS involving variables . Test for ( -2, -1, -1/2 , 0 , 1 , 2) Make sure to chk for units. Make sure to write down the kewords in the roghtsheet while reading the question ( such as consecutive nos, positive integers ..this helps make the rule of seven test list shorter) I wont harp on the most clichéd advise ..donot make silly errors ( how does one do it ..someone please tell me ;) ) For verbal : SC ( refer to the manhattan guide and OG). Follow up with 1000 sc for practice , comeback to OG in the last week for thorough understanding of each chice ( why is one wrong and why is one right) RC ..Practice mostly from Kap800 and OG CR…Use OG and Kap800, follow up with LSAT ( all materials can be obtained form various posts in the forum) Learning : For SC read all the choices and use POE For CR after eliminating three choices one is usually left with two. At this stage refer to the question stem again RC..read to understand , don’t skim. In the initial stages of ur preparation devote at least an hour everyday to participate in the forum. Be active participants in the section where you want to build ur strength. Practice Tests Well no practice tests are as good as the ETS ones but be sure you are aware of the change in the standard of quant ( the OG 11th edition , I suppose, will help you in this) Do not take the Practice tests for benchmarking scores. The objective should be to target a min no of mistakes and aim towards achieveing it . Remember no test other than ETS has been able to replicate the algorithm to make correct predictions of ur score. I will upload my practice test scores ( but as I said earlier donot use this for any sort of benchmarking) Some good practice tests other than Kap, ETS and Princeton ( scoring of this one is really buggy) are the Russian GAS tets. Learning: Most important net takeout from the practice tests should be your timing to always be in control of the exam. The timing strategy I followed: Quant : 1-7 ( 15 mins), 8-15 ( 15 mins), 16-20 ( 10 mins) , 21-25 (10 mins), 25-30 (10 mins) and 31 – 37 ( last 15 mins) Verbal : 1-7 ( 15 mins) , 8 – 15 ( 15 mins), 16 – 20 ( 10 mins), 21 – 27 ( 12 mins), 28 – 34 ( 12 mins), 35 –41 ( 11 mins) As I have said earlier use this just for ref but make ur own time. Exam taking attitude ( The most important section ) Remember it’s a smart exam ..keeps adapting to ur performance, but at the same time is very lenient. So keep a cool head. The best way to do this is to stick, no matter what, to ur time strategy. If you are over shooting the same just guess and proceed. Keep telling urself its an easy exam and just a means to an end. So not to get too tensed. Its natural to feel exam nerves , pause and take deep breath. The day before the exam ...donot study listen to some good music or do anything that relaxes you Finally, all said and done never loose focus on the ultimate goal. Have a game plan and remember this test fits into one section of the overall plan , so there is no point in getting too tensed or giving it too much importance. I dont believe that I have got the acore I deserve , I believe I can do better , but I will prove it in my actions in the future , will not retake the exam ;) Remember there are many peoplee close to you, who also make a lot of adjustments when you are going through the preparation process. The least you can do is to comeback with a smiling face and give them whats due rather than sulk if u hvnt done ur best and spoil their mood also.. My wife has been a pillar of support to me during my prep and now I hv to end this post to spend some time with her :) May the force be with all of you. Thanks Well just started shortlisting the schools..will probably look at school with a specilaised course in finance NUMBER & SET THEORY BASICS.doc
