  1. does anyone know which programs allow the greatest number of transfer credits from previous CS MS coursework? also, which programs are known to have shorter avg times-to-degree? this data is difficult to find on the web, so i'm guessing word-of-mouth is the best route.
  2. i just got into a cs master's program ranked 30 by usnews. now i'm looking for advice about what my goals should be if i want to get into cambridge (:D ) for phd in three years. i'm going to try to get an ra and of course A's, but what else?
  3. unlike the MS, the ME coursework can be completed remotely. i can't afford to quit my job and pay out of state tuition so i might do that. just wondering if anyone knows anything about it. tia
  4. general reputation of your alma mater is only important if you think you may switch careers or apply to a job/school somewhere where the recruiters are not well-informed about your field. and to impress friends and family, if you care about that sort of thing.
  5. just wondering if anyone is still waiting for response letters from CS programs for fall '06. thanks.
  6. the world university ranking conducted by someone in china placed the top four as harvard, mit, cambridge, berkeley.
  7. comparing your profile to others' here and based on your admits, those all seem like good targets. did you choose those schools based on your research interests? if so, then sounds like a good list.
  8. it's here (4th reply) but neither school is included. umn is ranked higher in the overall cs ranking, i believe. http://www.www.urch.com/forums/admissions-results/46781-usnews-cs-systems-ai-ranking-needed.html
  9. congratulations on the admit. if you search around, there is a 2006 ranking for artificial intelligence somewhere. it includes the top 20 schools. i can't remember if jhu or umn were included.
  10. yeah i noticed that too and i found it strange. i originally applied only to schools that had programs with at least a few classes and *some* research in an area i found interesting. but even still only one or two of those schools had a focus in my primary (or preferred) area of intended specialization.
  11. you should email the dept grad advisors. i doubt there is a lot of knowledge about those programs in the online community.
  12. ask them if they can give you a deferment. probably only give you till spring, but maybe if you explain your situation.
  13. do you mean eecs? i've seen quite a few reports of letters received from uci eecs on here, but only one or two reports of a response from uci ics. same thing on gradcafe. hmm... maybe they just don't post here.
  14. do you know of anyone who has been admitted to ics? i haven't heard back either.
  15. not sure if you're referring to the graphic as seductress, but misspiggy is male, i think.
  16. I'm not sure if i want to enroll, but the response is due monday. can i send in my intent letter and then withdraw later (i.e. for a good reason, like i get into another school i'm waiting for or for health reasons)? Or maybe a better question is, how would that work, since I'm sure it's possible? Thanks for any help.

  20. usc is much better than sdsu for cs
  21. if you need help moving old threads around, i'd be willing to help if you want to make me a temporary mod.
  22. umich is ranked 15, ucsd is ranked 13, and gatech is ranked 11. the usnews rankings are based solely on surveys sent to professors in each dept.
