My Target Scores

  1. Hi everyone, I'm currently finishing my B.Sc. in Economics at a good university in a European country, and I'm planning to apply for PhD programs in the US for either the 2018 or 2019 intake. I've received offers from LSE, UCL, Warwick, SSE (all MSc Econ) and Cambridge (MPhil Econ) and am now trying to decide which one would best prepare me for PhD programs in the US. My interests are in applied microeconomics. Does anyone have insights which of those programs is considered the strongest signal by admissions committees in the US (let's say TOP30) at the moment and dhow hard it is to actually obtain good enough grades at those universities to be competitive, setting aside all other parts of the application (RAships, LORs, etc.). Thanks in advance, any input would be greatly appreciated!
  2. Dear friends, i am an MS aspirant and want to do my masters in Software engineering.I shortlisted a few universities for my course.I came across Carnegie Mellon University Application requirements website and i was shocked to see that they admit students on minimum of 290 score(more information can be found at Application Components for Software Engineering-Silicon Valley Campus - Carnegie Mellon University) my GRE score is 321.As far as i have learned CMU is best in the field of computer's considering the researches and the placements they offer. so as a result I am bit confused, would it be wise to take admission in CMU?? Thanks all for your time
  3. Academic Profile (I apologize for any ambiguity, but I wish to inquire anonymously :shy:): BA in Business Administration w/ concentration in International Business BS in Accounting Minor in Spanish Masters of Accountancy w/ concentration in Tax GPA:3.4 I attended the same university for undergraduate and graduate degrees, and it routinely finishes in the top 10 of scoring nationwide on the CPA exam. Additionally, I was very involved with a number of organizations on campus; I assume, however, that this fact is nearly irrelevant at this point. GMAT: 650 (79th percentile) (42 Verbal, 36 Quantitative). I scored WELL above this on all simulated exams (GMAT provided and 3rd party), but honestly I don’t do well under lots of pressure. I’m wary of retaking the exam, as it’s always possible I’ll do worse. After graduating I studied full-time for the Uniform CPA Exam, and passed all parts on my first attempts (avg. score of 82, again, not great under pressure). I do not have my license quite yet, as my state board requires new CPA’s to work a full year for licensing. I know that ideally programs would like applicants to have experience in Big 4 accounting, but I for a multitude of reasons I chose to work in industry, and honestly feel I have learned more than many of my peers who went Big 4. I began working in the tax department of a fast-growing Fortune 500 company after completion of my exam in November 2011. Our department is comprised of 7 employees responsible for all income and sales taxes, and I report directly to the head of the department. I deal with assignments on both the income and sales tax sides and have taken the lead on several important research projects, cost-benefit analysis/tax planning projects, as well as general compliance and reporting. I am very involved in my community, as a volunteer with BBBS and my parish’s youth ministry. I am also very active in general, playing for a men's rugby team, and running 2 marathons per year. (Again, this may be completely irrelevant, but may come in hand during an interview). I am interested in applying to: Arizona State, University of Memphis, Ole Miss, Florida International, Southern Illinois, LSU, & Arkansas I realize I’m not a shoe-in for any of these schools (and four of them are probably “reach schools”), but am I completely unrealistic with where I’m looking? If so, where would you suggest? Thanks!
  4. I was looking for people to evaluate this profile for the 2012 cycle. I am shooting for schools ranked 30-60, maybe some Canadian/EU MA's, wondering if I'm being a polyanna here and have too high of hopes. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Math and Econ at Top 40 US, its an LAC tho so no grad course offerings Undergrad GPA: 3.45 (3.92 in Math and Econ courses) Type of Grad: N/A Grad GPA: N/A GRE: 800 Q, 640 V, 5.5 AWA Math Courses: Calc I-III (A, A, A), Lin Alg (A), Intro to Stats (B+, this was first semester freshman year tho), Methods in Statistics (A-), Applied Matrix Alg (A), Statics and Dynamics (A), Taking Real Analysis and ODE in the Fall Econ Courses: Intro, Intermediate Micro/Macro (A, A, A), IO (A), Directed Study (A), Taking Game Theory, Econometrics, Advanced Micro in the Fall Other Courses: Litany of poli sci and neuroscience/psych courses Letters of Recommendation: Uncertain on these, one prof I've RA'ed with, and another that I did a directed study with most likely. Research Experience: One summer at experimental economics lab, one year as RA for economist who teaches grad business courses, one year as RA for psychologist, have a behavioral econ experiment that is IRB approved waiting to run in the fall. Teaching Experience: None Research Interests: Behavioral Economics, Health Economics, Economic History SOP: N/A Other: I am hoping that showing more interest in research will be able to make up for some weaknesses in Math. Just wondering where I stand now, how the profile would stack up. Thanks for any assistance.
