aspirant1976
Bob, what do you say about the use of mere and merely. I feel mere(adj.) is right. Isn't that another criterion which favours E. waiting for your answer. thanks, aspirant1976
check.stone
nothing grammatically wrong with E, and it's preferable to D if mere is modifying "three percent" and not just "percent". but if we look at the emphasis on the three as opposed to five or ten or any other possible percentage of a cell's DNA that these genes could have been found in but were not, than the intent of the usage of mere/merely has to be on three solely. since the OA is given as D, whoever wrote this question is splitting this hair. and given that D is also grammatically correct(though less well written than E), the original meaning of the sentence appears to be the reason for OA being D rather than E. enough on this question. this question is clearly not from an official source. lawrencl
As a result of the ground-breaking work of Barbara McClintock, many scientists now believe that all of the information encoded in 50.000 to 100.000 of the different genes found in a human cell are contained in merely three percent of the cell's DNA. 50,000 to 100,000 of the different genes found in a human cell are contained in merely 50,000 to 100,000 of the human cell's different genes are contained in a mere the 50,000 to 100,000 different genes found in human cells are contained in merely 50,000 to 100,000 of human cells' different genes is contained in merely the 50,000 to 100,000 different genes found in a human cell is contained in a mere ....information ... is.... eliminate A, B, C D is bad because noun tense "cells' " and then "cell's " do not match. IMO E.
catchamogh
I opted for E but now really got confused between D n E... pls comment..
TaTum
My answer is E. "All of information" is singular, and "mere" should be in adjective form to modify "three percent."
mitzi
My pick is E. Whether "the" is used, the meaning of the sentence has a big difference. in 4, it means there are more than 50,000-10,000 of human cell's~ in 5, there is only 50,000-10,0000 of human cell's~
ap1010
I will agree with E. For reasons related to mere versus Merely
sushkan2008
I think its E...because of 'is'...
