  1. so...school, jobs, traveling, studying, reading, home, research, friends, family, relaxing Hope we still have some of the above when we are actually in grad school :)
  2. So what's your plan before the life in grad school starts? For those of you coming off colleges, what are you going to do during the summer break? And for those of you who are working, what's your transition from a full-time job holder to a student? I was just curious... how long do you plan to arrive in town before classes start? What do you plan to do during that time other than moving, apt hunting, etc.
  3. Congrats! I'm so happy for you :) Hope you two have a great time together Things didn't work out for my significant other and me, however. My SO is going to Caltech and I'm probably going to MIT :(
  4. I would suggest that you take a look at the research opportunities. However, since it's between cmu and uwashington, I would say cmu. I replied differently in the thread between umich and princeton b/c they are quite comparable in his/her scenario. but come on...yashm....I kind of get the feeling that you know where you wanna go.
  5. I thought USC was good for CS. Have you eliminated it already?
  6. It all depends on your potential advisor. Look for some professors that you want to work with and try talking to them. If I were in your position, I would think about these questions -Do I want to eventually get a PhD? -What kind of job do I want? -Which school has the kinds of research projects that suit my interest and what kind of advisor would I have for such projects. If I want to get a PhD after MS, I would prefer going to Michigan. Reco letters matter a lot and I would want good letters from people who are known in the field. It is likely that some Pton profs are famous in the field but I would guess that the population of famous EE prof at Michigan would be larger since it's supposedly a bigger dept and more rigorous in Engineering. If I want a job in industry, I might choose Princeton since the name is more recognized. However,if I want a job in academia, Michigan might have a slight edge. After all, it comes down to your research interests and the school that would be a good fit for them.
  7. You already got offers from good schools like UC Davis, LSE, UVA, UW Madison, and Georgetown...some with $. Don't worry about it ;) Enjoy your trip!
  8. No, it's not U of Chicago I'm talking about. I feel like my research interests fit better with the school in Boston, but I'm not sure if I could live without struggling too much with that amount of money. Plus, I would like to have some money left (although not a lot) by the time I graduate in order to help with starting my career. The subway-bus pass combo sounds nice. Is it the same bus that econgeek06 mentioned? Do you feel safe when traveling by subway or bus at night (say, around 6-9 PM)? Thanks a lot and good luck with the schools you are waiting for :)
  9. One school sent me an acceptance packet by next-day mail with no prior email notification. They emailed me about the visit about 2 weeks after that. All of my other admits are sent via email.
  10. Thanks for all of your opinions. I've heard of Wustl since I remember about their recruitment events at my highschool. I probably have heard of U of Wash before but I must have confused it with wustl. oh well my memory sucks. but now everything is clear. thanks!
  11. Not necessarily true. I was admitted to a program about a month after the first acceptance entry on gradcafe for that dept. That also happens to some people I know too. No news is no news. Just keep swimming and don't be discouraged
  12. As long as you can show that you have the background for the research you're interested in, it should be fine. Coursework and past experience count more than your major. Lots of people are interdisplinary.
  13. Thanks dyiwang and econgeek06. The place I live in right now also has ~$600-700 rent so I think I can probably manage my money in Boston. But you know...the stipend in Chicago is so tempting.
  14. Congratulation on her admit. man...I feel you. My significant other and I are both applying for grad schools and we have got no overlap yet. Best of luck to you and your gf!
  15. Congrats! and woohoo on the funding. I'm so happy for you :)
  16. Congratulations! Ithaca is nice and Cornell has good campus food and icecream :)
  17. Hi Econgeek06, Thank you so much for your reply. I prefer having a single room within walking distance to the MIT campus or close to a T stop. Your rent sounds good to me. Do you share bathroom or kitchen with others? Do you cook for yourself? If I were to commute to/from school by subway every weekday, how much should it cost per month? Thanks a lot =)
  18. Quick questions: How much would one need to live comfortably as a grad student in Chicago? Would $2000 a month be enough? and what about Boston? Would $1400 a month be enough? Thanks :)
  19. Thanks.. I had an impression that Wustl is also a smaller school... maybe? Good luck to you for all the schools you're waiting for :)
  20. Mr. Postman look and see...is there a letter in your bag for me...why it's taking such a long time...for me to hear from that top choice of mine. :)
  21. I am not very familiar with these 2 universities and was wondering if some of you could share your opinions on them. What are the strengths of these 2 school e.g. in humanities or sciences, what specific field? Which one, do you think, is better overall? Any opinion on these two school is appreciated. Thank you very much :)
  22. it's according to their email. I'm just providing information so nothing personal please...
