  1. Yes i think emailing brings bad luck-emailed UBC and Toronto and got swift negative replies. If I had waited maybe they would still have a spot after someone dropped off the waiting list.
  2. Rejection from Toronto..i asked for early consideration and got a rejection email. I have to confirm with a US program by early April. Is it wise to send an email to UBC to ask for early consideration?
  3. Yes, my GRE is low. I am not proud of it. I could have done better. But I wonder if they look at the entire profile or if GRE cutoff is very rigid.
  4. Oh, that does not look good. I am an international and I feel there might be higher benchmarks for international students. My GPA is 3.96 and I have scored well in my Math courses. However, my GRE did not go as well due to being under-prepared
  5. I find it slightly puzzling that even though the minimum GRE requirement for UofT and UBC is 160, it is often quoted here and otherwise that 170 is required to get into these programs. I can see that in the page you posted as well. The GRE scores are very high.
  6. When do the Canadian universities start sending out their acceptances? Any idea? Has anyone been with contact with any POI there?
  7. Anyway I got 161 in quant so I am not positive about the outcome from any of the schools. Will retake GRE and apply again this year
  8. I know they send out acceptances in february so I am just checking in-isn't the application 'sweat' thread?
  9. Has anyone heard back from SFU, Toronto and UBC?
  10. congrats! what were your stats? have your started your program?
  11. Can you please share your Stats? Does 161 in quant rule out admission?
  12. Hi I applied for Toronto's, UBC and Simon fraser's PhD programs but now I think my GRE is quite low to get into any of these. I have 164 in verbal but only 161 in quantitative. Anyone has heard of anyone with a low quant score getting in?
  13. No, unfortunately it's more than 5 years old so it doesn't count.
  14. Hi all, I am new to this forum-I am applying for PhD programs in Economics in both Canada and US this year but I am struggling with the choice of schools. Would really appreciate help on evaluation of my profile! My stats are as follows: Undergrad GPA: 3.96 at LUMS which is one of the most reputable universities in Pakistan Minor: Maths Major: Economics Graduate School: Cambridge Degree: MPhil in Economics Overall score: 64.3 My LORs will be from 3 economists: PhD Economics McGill PhD Economics UC-Davis PhD Economics Cambridge Research experience: 3 years as an RA for a think tank Interest in political economy of the labour market and institutional economics I would really appreciate help on whether I should apply to top tier schools or be more realistic and apply to mid-tier. Which schools would suit me? I would love to have more insight from those who have been through the process. The biggest gap in my application is lack of publications and the somewhat less than stellar score in MPhil due to some attenuating circumstances. I have to take my GRE yet so I am not sure of the score. But last time I took it, I had 800Q, 690V, and 5 AW. But GRE is a matter of luck so fingers crossed on that one. What do you guys make of my profile?
  15. and what do you think of job prospects of oxford economics for development program?
  16. I was just wondering if you guys can compare the career options after cambridge Mphil economics and Oxford Msc in Econ for Development? Are they very similar and can we do consulting after any of these? I want to keep my options open and want to be able to do both consulting and pursuing an academic career. any thoughts? By the way, I am interested in working in intergovernmental development agencies. Which one will be good for me?
  17. Does anyone on this forum know whether economic consulting is a possible career after completing msc in economics for development at Oxford? Or does the development part mean that one can only take jobs pertaining to development? How would you compare this program to mphil economics cambridge for example? by consulting, i mean consulting that happens at different firms such as Oliver and Wilde, McKinsey, Deloitte and any firm that requires analysis of markets etc. They pay a lot, much more than academic research. However, I am not sure if I will get a job there and if I would be interested in such a job so I want to keep my options open. I am more interested in development agencies by the way but they would prefer phDs rather than masters. So I don't know.
  18. Thanks econchef. That's quite a number of universities. I guess they are all second tier. It's a relief to know that my courses are sufficient because I was really beginning to doubt my transcript.
  19. No they haven't made a mistake. I didn't submit any proposal! They might have found my statement a bit confusing. Right now I have mailed them a rough idea of the thesis. I will pm you the idea. Can you give me some feedback?
  20. I am an international applicant and wanted to get into fully funded Queen's MA program. I haven't received any mail from U of T or Queen's. I have a decent profile. Someone over here suggested that I should apply to Waterloo in the next cycle. However, I am afraid I have only taken Micro1, Micro2, Macro 1, Macro 2, Empirical, Linear, ODE, Statistics, CAL 1 and Cal 2. Rest of my econ and math courses are very easy and theoretical in nature. Is that what is making me lag behind? Which program would accept me with funding in Canada or maybe even Europe, USA? My GPA is above 3.9 but the courses are not that great (not math-oriented and no advanced micro, macro etc, no real analysis).
  21. Guys, I received a mail today where the administrator has asked me to write about my research interests and thesis topic for DPhil in Development Studies or Economics. I applied for MSc in Economics for Development and now I have to write a thesis topic for DPhil. What best to do at this point? Is this a good sign or a bad sign? My friends got admission last yr without going through this step. Did anyone else receive this mail?? Any guidance how to write this statement? Would it be advisable to identify someone to work with? I am interested in education, social equity etc. Work done by Marcel Fafchamps is relevant to this. And should I say that I would like to apply to DPhil in Development Studies or Economics later on? How will that affect my application?
  22. guys, I received a mail today where the administrator
  23. same here enrique. I got a rejection mail too. It's quite disheartening. But I hope something better comes up. iA.
