  1. I think its B too. The crux of the argument is to evaluate the cost effectiveness of the new genetically modified cotton seed. The only option which suggests that cost could be lesser using GM cotton is B. HTH
  2. I will go with 1 A and 2 C. OA please
  3. ETS software must have gone bonkers to give you that score ! Dont even bother to think about writing it again.
  4. Its simple: v = 1/(2r)^3 = 1/((2^3) * (r^3)) Now substitue r/2 instead of r so the equation becomes v = 1/((2^3) * (r/2)^3) 2^3 goes up and v is multiplied by 8
  5. Hey Security Geek, I always use one formula: AUBUC = A + B + C - AnB - AnC - BnC + AnBnC in this case 70 = 40 + 30 +35 - x + 15 x in this case is the number of students in 2 or more courses which is 50 now in this 15 the people who do all three M G and E are included thrice so 50 - 45 = 5. Hope that makes it a little more clear.
  6. just to add to it if they said repetetions are not allowed and numbers 543 are fixed are first 3 digits then the number of distinct phone numbers will be 7 * 6* 5 *4.
  7. Obiwan here it is: Simple : write down 2 ^ 100 as 2^96 * 2^4 (indices rule a^x * a^y = a^(x+y) so the equation becomes 2^96 * 2^4 - 2^96 take 2^96 common so it becomes 2^96 (2^4 - 1) = 2^96(16 - 1 ) = 2^96( 3* 5) But the question stem looks like 2100 - 296 I was a little perplexed when I saw that. HTH, --smitha.
  8. Here is the correct formula for set theory n(A U B U C) = n(A) + n(B) + n© - n(A ^ B) - n(A ^ C) - n(B ^ C) + n(A ^ B ^C) I am using the caret symbol to mean intersection. In this case no pf people who liked at least one i.e. 1 or 2 or 3 is 85% Number of people who liked 1 is 50 Number of people who liked 2 is 30 Number of people who liked 3 is 20 Number of people who like all 3 is 5 Substitute in to the formula and you get no of people who like A and B or A and C or B and C = 20 i.e. 85 = 50 + 30 + 20 - say X + 5 X = 25 Now 25 is the no of people who like at least 2 brands i.e. 2 or more and the 5 people who like all three brands are included in these 25 people 3 times so no of people who like more than one of the brands is 25 - 3(5) = 25 -15 = 10 % To elaborate further on why I multiplied 5, 3 times suppose 15 people like brand 1 and 2 and 5 people like all three these 5 people who like all three are also a part of the group that likes 1 and 2. => If you like 1, 2 and 3 it obviously means you like 1 and 2. HTH, --smitha.
  9. B 5 2X * 2Y = 120 such that x > 4 and y therefore X * Y = 60 obi X and Y have to be integers because you cant have a fraction of a plane flying. So considering the values for X and Y such that X > 4 and Y X = 5 6 10 15 30 Y = 6 5 3 2 1 Totally 5 xombinations. OA please.
  10. E 43520 48 weeks = 1 year which is = T Total intrest accrued in one year = 48 * 68 = which is I Rate of annual interest = 7.5 = R I = PTR/100 Therefore 48*68 = P*1 * 7.5/100 P= 43,520 OA please !
  11. 6. Plants that exhibit certain leaf diseases tend to measure extremely high in the amount of zinc in their leaf and stem tissue. Botanists have discovered that phosphorus of the type typically used in a phosphorus-high fertilizer reacts with the zinc in such a way as to prevent treated plants from exhibiting the leaf diseases, and zinc is the cause and not merely an effect of the leaf diseases. Thus, plants can be cured from these leaf diseases by the use of a fertilizer high in phosphorus. The two portions in boldface play which of the following roles? (A) The first is the first-premise that the argument includes; the second is the second-premise that is in support of this argument. (B) The first is the background that the argument includes; the second is the part of evidence in support of this argument. © The first is the first-premise that the argument includes; the second is the consideration that is in support of the first. (D) The first is the premise that supports the evidence; the second is that evidence. (E) The first is the first-premise that the argument includes; the second is the second-premise that is complementary to other evidence. I found it easy to analyse it this way zinc is the cause of the diseases and how do we know that because diseased plants exhibit high zinc contents. So I chose E.
  12. Yay I got just two worng !! Will be posting the my expalnations soon.
  13. There is also another way to do it simply take the LCM of times taken by each to complete one round: i.e. 750/3 , 750/6 and 750/18 LCM of fractions = LCM of numerators/HCF of denominators. This is probaly the easiest approach to this problem.
  14. Here is the explanation for HelloPatience's method. When two people are running in the same direction the relative speed is a difference in speeds of the two people. In this case A=3 B=6 C=18 So relative speed of B wrt A is 6-3 = 3m/s Relative speed of A wrt to C is 18-3 =15m/s Therefore relative distances will be: B wrt A is 750/3 =250 C wrt to A 750/15 = 50 So they have to bridge this distance of 250 and 50 between them which is the LCM of 250 and 50 which is 250.
  15. Just to make it a little more clear h = max when a least number is subtracted from it. so the part associated with -16(t-3)^2 ahould be min. This part of the equation is min i.e. 0 when t=3.
  16. H is maxium when t=3 i.e because of the -ve sign associated with the h part. Therefore object reached max height when t=3 so 2s after it has reached the max height t will be 5 so the answer is 86. h = -16(5-3)^2 + 150 = 86
  17. Isn't this one of the questions on Kaplan PS practice tests on the CD ? I had got this wrong the first time ;)
  18. B is sufficient. you need to know the reading speed alone to determine the no of pages read in 1hr and B gives you michelle's reading speed as 30 * 10 = 300 words/min therefore if there are 250 words on a page she can read (250/300) * 60.
  19. One simple tip to remember for these kinds of problems. To minimise a -ve fraction you have to minimise the denominator so choose x and y values with least denominotors in the given range. Similarly to maximise a -ve fraction maximise the denominator.
  20. Yes if the box is bulging the internal perimeter has to be a little less than the exact perimeter to hold 4 cylindrical cans so the answer has to be 30 and not 32.
  21. You can find more explanation on Kaplan. However take the highest 3 digit integer divisible by 3 then take the lowest 3 digit integer divisible by 3 and subtract the second from first and divide by the no and add one. You can follow this rule to find the no of integers divisible by some number in the given range. HTH, -smitha.
  22. Are there just two driving forces fear and self interest as the author contends ? No. Although fear and self interest are major driving forces, inspiration, jealousy, revenge have their own roles to play as driving forces. The famous story of King Bruce and Sipder evolved as a result of drawing inspiration from the spider's act rather than self interest or fear. The destruction of Troy again was born out of revenge. You can elaborate on these two stories and may be from your own experience. Not in the mood to complete the full essay. Hope this gives you some ideas.
  23. I am getting E as the answer. Here is my explanation: consider five letter code words first. You have 5 spaces to fill from 10 letters. So the the number of five letter codes without repeating the letters is 10 * 9 * 8 * 7 *6 Similarly no of 4 letter code words is: 10 * 9 * 8 * 7 Therefore the ratio of 5 letter codes to 4 letter codes is 6:1. Can you give the OA if C is the answer ?
  24. A for me too. I plugged in the answer options. MAT how did you arrive at those equations: Should it not be this way (10x + y)/x = 12(10x + y) +1 (10y + x)/y = 10(10y + x) + 4 Not sure if you get the same thing after simplyfying these dint bother simplifying.
  25. D for me too same reasons quoted by TwinnSplitter but I difffer from hin/her in the option because Once thought of as does not have a correct noun associated with it. Who thought of it remains unanswered.
