  1. History of Economic Thought by E.K. Hunt. He's got a Marxist bent that he takes out most on Mill and Keynes but is still very thorough and does a good job to contextualize the developments in Economic thought with what was going on politically, economically, and socially at the time.
  2. Yeah my guess is that for top 10 schools this probably doesn't mean anything. Although the schools themselves usually won't accept their own undergrads anyways right?
  3. Wait, Boulder is worse in the granola-posh department? I find it awful in Eugene so I can't imagine how much worse it could be.
  4. Yeah it's all these minorities fault for wanting equal protection.
  5. All I'm saying is that I highly question how frivolous a lawsuit was if the employer's response is to avoid hiring minorities.
  6. Isn't it really hard to transfer? Is that actually a realistic option?
  7. I got this going on plus I stress eat a lot. I have actually stayed at relatively the same weight only because I've made it a point to start to go in early and workout before I begin doing any work. I am definitely envious of those with a spouse/significant other who can split chores/cooking up. My housemates just shed all over the furniture and demand I feed them at 5 in the morning every day.
  8. First year is going OK. **** tons of work, especially now because I'm trying to spend one day a week doing practice problems from the fall to stay sharp for end of year tests (whatever your program may call them). Does anyone find it extremely difficult to eat healthy during the first year? I come home from class and just feel exhausted usually.
  9. I've never seen a curve that actually hurts you like that. Yeesh that is brutal.
  10. I took a significant amount of time off between undergrad and grad school and I am very glad I did. Maybe it isn't viewed that favorably by adcoms, but I don't think I'd have done well in a grad program straight out of undergrad. I'm also strongly in favor of mandating that everyone take a year off between high school and undergrad as well.
  11. Disrespectful? Really? I mean I agree that it would appear "irresponsible" but you'd have to be on a huge ego trip to be "disrespected" by this.
  12. Good measure might be to compare qualifying exams among schools? See if on average a top 20 school asks harder questions than a top 40? edit: As far as research prep I mean I guess comparing field courses might be a better measure?
  13. IMO 3 and 5 sound like your best bets. Why would you take 4 if you could take 5?
  14. Uh just a heads up but I recall last year that they accepted the brunt of applicants really early and then only maybe a few got in after that first round. So the odds are not really ever in your favor if you weren't accepted in the first round, but it's still possible for you to get one.
  15. After 1 quarter I definitely think I'd be overwhelmed without it.
  16. Yeah you have more math than I do. That should be enough to handle the coursework in the first year.
  17. From what I've heard in general (ie across all departments) NYU is pretty much all TA's and Adjuncts teaching undergrads. No clue about UM. Not sure how this would impact your chances, but it might limit your opportunities for gaining research experience.
  18. I know people that have gone from consulting to PhD but they all want to go into academia so can't say much about if you want to go back into the business world.
  19. Pretty sure 161 doesn't translate to a strong score on the old scale. Maybe his end goal is a T-20? If so a Canadian Masters might be a good call?
