  1. So I submitted my application to NYU Stern, and there's a red X next to the transcript. I only uploaded an unofficial transcript, but noticed just now that the website says they require an official transcript. Does anyone (preferably someone else who has applied to NYU) know what I should do, or how I can get an official transcript to them? Their office is closed until Jan 3, which is after the deadline. Also as a side note, the application proof isn't loading - is that true for anyone else? Update: I uploaded an official copy through the status portal and now there is a green check mark, so that's nice. The application proof still isn't loading though, if anyone else is having issues with that.
  2. Hi, I was accepted at Columbia and Northwestern PhD in Economics and I am waitlisted at NYU. So at this point, I am deciding between Columbia and Northwestern, but still considering NYU in case of getting off waitlist. I will really appreciate for any opinion of which place seems as the best place to go. My research interests are more inclined towards financial economics and micro theory (where I know NWU has a strong tradition), however I am opened to other fields, so I am looking for the best overall department (any opinion regarding this I will appreciate it a lot). Also, I will like to go to the place that maximizes the chances of getting a good/decent academic placement (placements seem similar for the three programs, but maybe someone has a different opinion). Thanks a lot!
  3. Hello guys, I am interested in knowing the amount of funding (yearly stipend) that each school in top 30 provides to admitted students. I was trying to get this information via looking at gradcafe posts, but the information there is not complete. Can you share your information? Let me start first: NYU: $34,000 is common UCLA: $20,000-$27,000 UMich: $20,000-$23,000 UW-Madison: $22,000-$28,000 Cornell: $25,000-$32,000 Penn State: $28,000 is common Texas-Austin: $16,000-$18,000 UNC: $18,000-$21,000
  4. Undegrad: Econ Major at NYU. 3.7 GPA. I wrote an undergraduate honor thesis. Probably not gonna be very helpful. Grad: Stats and Math at Columbia. Probably will finish with a 3.5, or 3.3. Math and Stats courses: Finished:Calc 1-3(A), Linear Algebra(A), Real Analysis 1&2(A-), ODE(B), Probability(B), Mathematical Statistics(B+), Linear Regression Models(A-), Statistical Computation(B+). Work-in-Progress: Stochastic Processes, General Linear Modeling, Machine Learning. Will take: Optimization, Topology, Measure Theory and Fourier Analysis (Yes, this is an actual course despite its makeup). Caveat: I read up all the FAQs about math prep for Econ PhD. Sources include NYU, Berkeley, Cornell. I am basically catering my math profile for these three schools. Econ Courses: Basic stuff that you need to graduate as an Econ major. No advanced stuff. GRE: The first time I took it I got 327. Will take it again and hopefully land at 335. SOP: Very general and explains my passion for using math tools to solve economic issues. LOR: One from my undergraduate honor thesis advisor. The rest comes from my math profs who taught me analysis. Research Experience: Only came from my undergraduate thesis, which was supervised. Target Schoos: Berkeley, NYU, Cornell, Brown, JHU. Reach Schools: Vanderbilt, Rice, BU&BC, Chapel Hill, Washington St Louis. Safe Schools: I'll eat up any school that is outside the top 30. Questions: 1. Am I on the right track here? That is, am I doing enough? 2. I am extremely stressed out because I think F2019 will be a tough app year for Econ PhD. Anyone can share their thoughts on that? 3. Idk. Just thoughts? Any?
  5. Hi, I have received offers for Phd in Social Sciences from Caltech and Phd in Economics from New York University. I am pretty sure I would like to work in Economic Theory. I would appreciate if you guys could provide your opinions about these 2 places that could help me make the decision. Thank you.
  6. I am an Electrical Engineer , from India ( Shiv Nadar University ) who has a minor in economics ( Rank - 3rd/55).I have been recently selected in M.A. Economics program at NYU . What are my prospects of getting through a Phd. program in Economics after completion of this degree in a top 10 school in US ?
  7. Hi all, I've been lucky enough to receive offers from both NYU and UPenn and I'm trying to decide between these two programs. My research interests lie in macroeconomics in general, and more specifically labor, growth, public finance, and development. Both places have stellar faculty, although on this point I'm leaning slightly towards UPenn since I really like the work of guys like Akcigit and Greenwood. But only slightly. I think my decision will come down to department atmosphere and how well I might feel supported by faculty, as well as by fellow students, at each program. I think this is really important in your day to day experience, especially if you're in this for the next 5 years. From what I've heard NYU is great in this sense, as the professors seem to be quite invested in advising and placement, and although each student naturally wants to be the best of his/her cohort, the competition seems to take place on friendly and healthy grounds. On the other hand, I've read a lot about UPenn's supposedly high attrition rate and cutthroat atmosphere and I was wondering how true this might be, any UPenn students out there? Also, does anybody know what faculty interaction and the general department's atmosphere is like there? Do professors care about students? Thanks!
  8. Hi guys, could you guys help me choose between these three programs: MA Economics at NYU (Accepted) - 1.5 years MA International Economics and Finance at Brandeis (Accepted with significant scholarship) - 2 years MA Applied Financial Economics at Duke (Awaiting Decision) - 2 years Specifically, I would appreciate if you could comment on each school's academic reputation compared to each other, their recruiting facilities and employment prospects as well as career resources, taking into consideration that I am an international student. As you can tell, I'm not interested in pursuing a PhD in the future and working in the industry is the goal here. Personally, I'm interested in Financial Economics so I really like the Duke's program but am not so sure about the recruiting there. NYU is preferable in terms of location and prestige, but the program would be less financially oriented. And I just don't know enough about Brandeis but the scholarship made it a lot more attractive. Thanks!
  9. Hi, I did not know that nyu's deadline was 5pm on 18th December and not 11:59. So I ended up paying and submitting at 5:20 pm est. Will my application be rejected without even being opened?? Thanks
  10. Hello, Currently I am enrolled in a little university known as Bentley. It is a small business university. I like it but I don't feel like the environment and opportunity will allow me to have research experience or good recommendation letters. My current GPA is 3.71 (mind you I am a freshman into second semester). I think that I could possibly transfer to NYU, U of Michigan, Northwestern, or possible somewhere else. Outside of accounting and finance Bentley is not well known and really now I am dead set on pursuing economics career. Here is the kick, I have a scholarship at Bentley that covers half my tuition. Its a great help to my parents and even though they say its okay if I change schools I feel bad for wasting my merit scholarship, however I could use the merit scholarship to get accepted at a reputable economics program. So should I transfer to a better undergrad to position myself for a good PhD (top40ish) or should I stay and try to preform better? This is very important as deadline are approaching and any answer would give me a piece of mind. Thanks in advance.
  11. Hello everyone, I am glad to say that I was accepted into UMich LSA and NYU CAS for Economics and Mathematics double major. My ultimate goal is to do Ph.D in economics, preferably in econ theory, experimental econ. However, right now I am having trouble deciding which school would offer me the best education to prepare me to apply for Ph.D. Which undergraduate program would be a better choice? I am out of state for umich, so the costs between the 2 would be similar. Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you!
  12. Hello everyone, I was accepted to UMich LSA and NYU CAS for Economics and Math major. I am having trouble deciding which school is a better option for future Ph.D chances in Econ. I would love to hear from someone who went to either one for undegrad and hear their feedback on the programs, like class availability, engagement with faculty outside classroom, research and RA opportunities. Please PM me! It would really help to make a decision! Thanks
  13. Hey all, as many others I am here to get some help evaluating my admission chances for top programs in the US (NYU, Columbia,...). My 'advantage': I still have two and half years left in my undergrad before I will start applying for grad programs, so I hope with the right decisions in the near future I can prepare myself to be a strong applicant! My profile: Bachelors in Economics (University Freiburg, germany) Bachelors in Mathemartics (University Berlin, germany) Economics degree is almost finished, I will start maths this fall. By completition I will have more than enough math and econ classes, I dont worry about that, BUT: - gpa? the things is that in some classes, I just could not get an A. For example my public policy class, best of 250 students, and I got a B-. in economics I will probably get a gpa of 1.3 - 1.6 which formally translates to 3.4 - 3.7 however no one ever got an 1.0 (4.0 US scale). Do american grad schools know that it is harder to get perfect scores in germany and other countries? - research experience, I worked on a research project for my professor when I studied abroad in the US last year. Nothing to fancy though. I will definately try to get some more research experience during the next years. Is research experience in maths also welcome for economics phd applications or should I really try to get research experience in econ? - teaching experience, I tutored maths/statistics for two semesters - GRE I dont worry about the quantitative part, verbal part could be a problem not being a native english speaker - LOR: well mh, no one really famous, but at least one really good letter from a professor who knows me, I worked for him and even did a grad class with him! So what do you guys think? What should I focus most on the next few years? Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
  14. I am interested in getting a PhD from NYU Stern/Columbia GSB in finance/statistics/decision theory at some point in the future. I have an offer to work as quant at an IB in NYC. I'd like to know if undertaking courses at NYU/Columbia from the PhD curriculum part-time to the extent possible, would a. Strengthen my application(I have an undergraduate+masters in engineering + some quant experience) b. If admitted, reduce the time I spend completing the PhD, full-time, to 2-3 years - assuming I manage to do most of the coursework in the curriculum part-time while working. More generally, how could one utilize a few years spent as a quant in NYC to prepare for a business PhD? Apologies if this question has already been asked/answered before - forum search didn't return anything relevant.. Thanks!
  15. Hello everyone, I am collecting all the information I can (placements, relationship between grad students and faculty, realtionship between grad students, life on campus, the city, etc.) about the PhD. in Economics program at Princeton, Chicago, NYU, NW and Minnesota. I am macro-finance so it would be great if you can rank those departments in that field. Any suggestion is more than welcome! Thanks.
  16. I am now holding two admissions: Master of Economics in New York University and a master of Finance (1-2year) in London School of Economics(1 year) and had to decide before April 29. I am definitely not looking for a Phd in any area, I would like to work in Europe or North America in area of finance or consulting after graduation. I may not need to work for long, 1-3 years might satisfy. I am Asian, and am not sure with policies, especially England. Could you guys give me some ideas on which school possess greater popularity among employers. I know NYU might have access to many career resources, but not sure. Thank you guys!
  17. Right now I'm not sure what exactly I want to specialize in, but I know NYU stern would give me more options. NYU also gave me a quarter scholarship and it has the city life but no campus. Northwestern has prestige and a campus life, but I'm afraid it will be difficult to find a job with econ degree in northwestern. Any feedback would be appreciated and please give me your reasons.
  18. Hi all, Im new here and its my first post (obviously). I'm from india and am planning to do MS in Business and IT for i've done my undergraduate in IT. Something like Management and systems. My dream is to get into NYU. :D Am keeping my fingers crossed on that . Till then im working my butt off to make sure i get into it... I've just started to prepare for GRE and the admission process all seems so confusing . 19. Has anyone applied to the NYU Politics graduate program, and if so - any results?? I know the GSAS admissions FAQ says to expect letters by late March, but the Department website says by mid-February...
  20. Decision Time, Schools and Choices, and Planning for the PhD, Advice / HELP Hey everyone, as a reader of this forum, I have utilized it in the past for my planning regarding PhD admissions for economic programs, and right now, I am transferring schools (undergraduate) and looking to make the right choice for attaining my goals in graduate school. Ultimately, I am shooting for a Top 5 school and realistically wanting to gain admission to those in the Top 15. At the present, I am graduating my sophomore year of college, and I will be transferring to a 4-year school. My reason for transferring is that I graduated from Northern Virginia Community College (with a 4.0 GPA), and I need to transfer to get my degree. Relative to economics and math, I have completed 200 level Micro and Macro as well as Calc I, Calc II, Vector Calc (Calc 3), Lin Alg, Intro Stat, and Diff Equations, all with A's. I plan to pursue a double major in mathematics and economics in order to receive the rigorous math preparation for an economics PhD. Additionally, I would like to take some introductory graduate level economics courses to be competitive for top tier schools. I'd like to work extremely hard to finish my next two years with 4.0 and if not then hopefully a 3.8-3.9. By dilemma is in choosing the best school from my choices. Ignoring for a moment the differences in price, funding, and college environment, which school will be best with respect to the following: · the availability of upper level mathematics and economics courses, · availability of professors (notable or otherwise those willing to work with me so I can attain excellent LORs), · ease of graduating with a high GPA (the school doesn’t have issues with GPA deflation) · the overall undergraduate ranking and reputation of each school · the departmental rankings of each school in mathematics and economics · the graduate rankings of each school in mathematics and economics My choices of admitted schools and some of my thoughts wrt each school are as follows: · Vanderbilt University: o U.S. News Ranked 17 in overall undergraduate education o Fair availability of upper level math, but not to the same extent as NYU of UW-Madison o Professors are supposed to be readily available and willing to work with students on projects and research o Ranked significantly lower in undergraduate mathematics according to Gourmand Report Rankings o Ranked much lower in grad math at #51 by U.S. News o Ranked at #34 for Graduate economics programs o Concerns over reported grade deflation at Vanderbilt and difficulty or likely impossibility of graduating with the GPA I want · NYU o U.S. News Ranked 32 in undergraduate education o Exceptional availability of upper division math and econ courses o Wondering if professors are as approachable and willing to work with students? o Undergraduate ranking of Math department by Gourmand among the very best in the nation o Grad school rankings by U.S. news put NYU in the top 5 for analysis and top spot for applied mathematics o U.S. News puts NYU overall at #10 for grad math rankings o Ranked at #12 for Econ Grad program by U.S. News o Unknown about the difficulty of maintaining a high GPA? · University of Wisconsin Madison o U.S. News Ranked 39 in undergraduate education o Exceptional availability of upper division math and econ courses o Thinking that given the school’s size and environment, there will be good professors to work with for LORs o Undergraduate ranking of Math department by Gourmand among the best in the nation but not as high as NYU but in the top tier o Grad school rankings by U.S. news put UW-Madison at #10 in Analysis and #16 Overall o #14 in Grad Econ overall by U.S. News o Suspect that getting the GPA I want will be easier than at either Vanderbilt or NYU · College of William and Mary o #33 overall in undergraduate education o Not really considering due to the lack of availability in upper division mathematics and introductory graduate economics courses I guess the issue I’m really struggling with is the idea of going to a collectively lower ranked school over Vanderbilt. Similarly, I know that NYU and Wisconsin have better math and economics departments and will probably be easier on my GPA. Would top graduate schools rather see a top GPA from Wisconsin or NYU over a lower GPA from a reputedly more rigorous school (even if the departments aren’t as well recognized)? Or am I better off period where I can graduate with the highest GPA? Also, would making close connections with professors at either NYU or Madison be as feasible as at Vanderbilt and would those connections help with graduate admissions to those schools’ economics programs? While I’d ultimately like to get to a top 5, I’d be perfectly happy with NYU or Madison’s grad program so I’m wondering if going there would provide an inside edge with admission and funding, assuming I meet all the other criteria. I know this was a long post, but thank you to anyone who reads this and offers advice!
