Hi, I'm really interested in getting into the joint program in Financial Economics at the University of Chicago, I'm wondering if it's better, for any reason, to apply through one department or the other in order to maximize the probability of being accepted and getting funded. Are the admission committee in each department looking at different things? Is it background dependent? Or once I state that I want to apply to the joint program it won't matter anymore? Should I state that I want to apply to the joint program? Also, does the master conferred is dependent on the department you apply? Chicago Econ department is well known for sending unfunded offers, is this true as well for Booth? I've a bachelor's degree in finance and a bachelor's degree in economics both from a university outside U.S.A. that usually places students in the top 20, more in economics than in finance, but it happens as well, and I'm going to finish an economics master that is specially rigorous in economic theory. Hello, I just received an email asking me to complete a 3 hour data analysis and coding quiz sometime in the next few days as part of the University of Chicago Pre-Doc positions interview process. Has anybody taken a similar quiz that may be able to tell me what I can expect? This is my first time doing this for an academic interview, however, I've taken IBM's coding quiz for a software development position in the past. I plan on brushing up with a couple questions on HackerRank, but I'm not sure if this is going to help seeing that this is a data quiz and I haven't heard the language requirements. Any advice would be great, I haven't had an acceptance come in yet so I'm really hoping to continue this interview process. Thank you!

Hello everyone, Does anyone have any advice about whether or not it's a good idea to add a 4th referee for the universities that give you the option? I know that Duke recommends that you don't unless you really feel it's necessary which is fair enough, but others like Chicago, Cornell and Brown give you the option of adding up to 5 referees and don't seem to recommend against it. Is it likely to be an advantage to provide 4 referees for schools like Chicago etc, or is it definitely better to stick to 3 for all of them? Many thanks.

Hi Everyone! I am a junior from China who is participating a visiting program in the US right now. Trying to finalize my application list for graduate schools next Fall. I am interested in PhD programs near Chicago for some personal reasons. I am a top 5% Economics major from Wuhan University with some research experience in Applied Micro, IO, Labor and Micro theory are my top three field choices. Any suggestions are highly appreciated!

Can anyone comment on whether the PhD program at Chicago deserves its bad rap? Concerns about things like extremely large and poorly-performing cohorts in some past years, uninvolved/inattentive advisors who don't care about their students, intense competitiveness/unfriendliness within cohorts, and extreme criticism at seminars come to mind. I still have many pending decisions but I'm mentally ranking my options now and trying to figure out whether I would prefer to go to Chicago or do an RA stint and shoot for better (HMSBP) in 2 years. In particular I'm still recruiting for RA positions because I'm not totally sure I would choose Chicago over being an RA. My interests are more or less within applied micro (labor, devo, political economy, I/O).

Anyone have suggestions about which would better for someone who didn't study econ in undergrad but is interested in maybe doing a PhD? Thanks so much! Hi all! I'm preparing writing sample for my applications right now. The only thing I currently have is a short (5 pages single spaced) assignment. I see that the top programs have very specific page limits on their require writing samples (Harvard 15+ pages, Chicago 15-20, etc.). Does anyone know if submitting a short writing sample would be a bad idea? Thanks in advance!

Hello, I have offers from Chicago's PhD program in economics and Harvard's public policy PhD at HKS. My interests are mainly in development and applied micro broadly (including health, labor, environmental, empirical IO). Chicago attracts me because of its prestige in academia and its training and strength in economics. However, I heard the program is brutal and mentoring by faculty is lackluster. Recently its faculty seem to be macro/finance/theory focused, which is not my area of interest. Harvard attracts because of its strengths in development, connections to Harvard/MIT econ faculty, and a smaller cohort with more flexibility in coursework. There's also a certain prestige of Harvard broadly, and for any non-academic jobs. However, it is not as prestigious in the economics job market, making it tough to market a Public Policy PhD as opposed to economics. Is there anything (other than quality of life and financials) that I am not considering? Is there a clear (or weakly dominant) winner here? Any thoughts are much appreciated!

Hi everybody! I am going to Chicago's flyout (on April 4), but I was thinking that it would be useful to build a TM group in order to visit Northwestern on another day. I know that many of you facing the same dilemma probably choose to visit NU instead. Anyway, in case anyone is in the same situation ... Maybe on April 2? What do you say? I'm not sure but I presume that being a group let the Department provide more resources (a few current students, faculty members, etc....).

Hey everyone. Nice forum you all have here. I am favorably impressed by the collegiality. I'm in my early 40s and about 35 hours away from finishing and Econ undergrad program at UIC. (I have noticed quite a bit of caginess about what school posters attend, not sure if this is just habit or policy?) I had a crummy go at college in my late teens, so I went back with a pretty gimpy GPA, but it is coming up very fast as I am in the "a B is failing" mindset, more or less. I think i will manage to graduate with a 3.25 or so and with distinction in the dept. My interest in econ definitely runs more along the lines of an introspective generalist with a lot of real life experience in job markets and other cultures and the like than that of any sort of "quant." I have thoroughly resigned myself to getting through some real analysis before I'm done, and i will attempt to even like it, but it is not what interests me about econ. As such, I will cop to a bias against excessive mathematicization of human experience and pretty deep skepticism about microfoundations, assumed rationality and whatnot. I am most interested in attempts to fuse schools of thought or disciplines to come to terms with the fact that institutions matter, people have very transitive, endogenous preferences, etc. (Did i just hear a big needle scratch followed by silence?! I think not, but just asking.) To that end, I would be interested to hear from more generalists, heterodox folks, those who think economic history matters (even perhaps more than anything?) and any other cranks or fellow travelers! I am definitely mulling PhD programs and those with a strong interdisciplinary leaning strike me as a likely better fit. Please feel free to share any experiences/thoughts along those lines. Cheers!
