Hi all, Currently undergrad. Got into Brown and CMU. Interested in macro, development, monetary economics. Have an offer for RA position for top 3 business school, with new APs. Also in the process for a prestigious pre-doc fellowship. What are your thoughts on what to take? Thanks a ton!

Hello everyone, Does anyone have any advice about whether or not it's a good idea to add a 4th referee for the universities that give you the option? I know that Duke recommends that you don't unless you really feel it's necessary which is fair enough, but others like Chicago, Cornell and Brown give you the option of adding up to 5 referees and don't seem to recommend against it. Is it likely to be an advantage to provide 4 referees for schools like Chicago etc, or is it definitely better to stick to 3 for all of them? Many thanks.

Hi there, this is my first post here on Urch. I'm curious as to whether any of you may have insight into the Econ PhD programs at Caltech and Brown University, and how they stack up against each other? I for one tend to prefer the culture at Brown better than that of California in general, but would like opinions as to how Caltech as a school stands. Caltech's website on Economics is fairly meager from what I could find, and I think it was a Social Sciences page rather than an Economics one. Brown University seems very selective, more so than Caltech. What are your thoughts about these schools?

Hi, I'm interested in development and applied micro economics, and need to choose between these two options. Historically, Michigan has had much better placement. But, they lack of senior faculty in development in particular now. They do have a lot of interesting APs joining this fall though. Brown has incredible senior faculty - some of whom have joined in the past few years, but I don't think that their placements have quite caught up yet. Brown is a riskier option (don't know if the placements will catch up) - so not sure whether I should go for the place with more interesting senior people or the program that has a higher median placement.

Hello I was wondering what peoples' thoughts are between Michigan's and Brown's programs for someone interested in Development and Political Economy (applied micro), and maybe some of the firm side of IO/trade (contracting & market power) and possibly history? It seems to me that placements are better generally from Michigan, but that there are concerns about the some senior faculty possibly leaving (don't know how much of that is rumor vs reality), the IO group has basically all left, and the political economy group is only in the poli sci department (does that matter? there are Econ Ph.D.s there) On the other hand, Brown has a slightly worse track record historically, but does have some exciting new people in IO (Jesse Shapiro) and Dev (Dan Bjorkeregen), and a strong history in Dev and Political Economy (Dal Bo). Additionally, it is on the East Coast so likely more interaction with Harvard, MIT, Yale, Princeton, etc. It seems to me that they are prioritizing Econ going forward. At both places, faculty and students seem accessible and excited, so fit/culture doesn't really seem to be an issue either place.

So I have two options that I am considering right now. I have a PhD offer from UCSD that would pay about 20k/yr with a readership/ta position after the first year. I also am considering the "MA" track at Brown (which, from what I gather, is a way to get around the promise of full funding to all PhD students, I'd have to pay 50% tuition + living expenses), whereby after the first year I would receive full funding and be in the normal PhD program (about ~29k/yr). Now, considering my interests in micro theory and development, Brown is the more appealing program without considering funding. Of course, I'd be more than happy to go to UCSD, and I consider myself lucky to have admits this cycle since I really limited myself by only applying T20 (I had very unrealistic expectations). I am unsure if I should actually be considering the Brown program, and am very conflicted. I intend on visiting both schools, but I'd like to start weighing my options as soon as possible.
