Profile Evaluation: Phd in Operation Management
yangyang2000 replied to Racer's topic in PhD in Business
I would take linear algebra and real analysis for the credentials, though honesty not much of either is used in depth in RM research.- 5 replies

Need advice: an English major in a marketing phd
yangyang2000 replied to Day360's topic in PhD in Business
We have a CB student at Rice who did an undergrad in English + masters in education. Depending on your MBA program, the stats preparation there should be enough for your stats/psychometrics classes as a CB. -
I think the OR/OM track would be good if you want to do theory type research. It's generally strongly encouraged in both fields and most top journals publish majority theory papers (unlike most other business disciplines). Empirical asset pricing as someone mentioned could be an option if you also like to test theory. However, if you don't really have specific interests in finance, I'm not sure going to finance is a good idea. OR is much more closely tied to phenomena you can easily observe and thus you might find this research more interesting. This might be a personal bias, but this is the way I felt having sat through finance seminars and talked extensively with my classmates in finance. On the other hand, you make a lot more money in finance.

Anybody here have any idea what business faculty salaries are in Europe?
-
UG gpa is a bit low, is that due to conversion from international grading system? Grad GPA could also be considered on the low side, was this a financial engineering/quant heavy masters? I would also talk to your rec writers, maybe they didn't give you the best rec.

There were a few programs I never heard back from, shoot them an email, they should tell you.

Quantitative Marketing - Math/Stats Preparation

But if you need to take more classes, dynamic programming would be good, a good substitute would be macro. -
Quantitative Marketing - Math/Stats Preparation
yangyang2000 replied to efh0888's topic in PhD in Business
First year sequence of micro math and metrics should be plenty, I'd focus more on getting acquainted with the marketing literature. -
If you can score significantly better on the GMAT, you should reapply

Where's your home country?

The fact that most people, business PhDs and applicants at that, don't know of its existence should be telling.

Your spouse has to be happy for the next 5 years, go with school B.

Please Withdraw Your Application If You Have Better Choices
yangyang2000 replied to jife's topic in PhD in Business
Having been through this 2 years ago, I'd caution anyone from withdrawing too hastily. I ended up going to a program that is lower ranked than an earlier accept, I changed mind about the program during the flyout. -
I would caution against rescinding an acceptance...if that is a planned course of action, I'd try to negotiate a later deadline, if they don't agree, take the offer, but remind them of the 4/15 rule for binding agreements. Make sure everything is clear up front. The academic world is small, I would try to minimize the likelihood of making a bad impression.

If you have other offers, I would negotiate the deadline, if they don't like it, then tell them no.

Really need advice... thinking of Quitting

Suck it up. Most of the battle is persistence. -
It is possible to write mktg papers as a Econ phd and switch disciplines at the time of job mkt. Marketing job market is before Econ, so you could test out the waters this way. It is very difficult to do so if you aren't from a top Econ program.

Why job market for Quant Marketing is better than Behavioral?
yangyang2000 replied to hugh's topic in PhD in Business
I think there's also a skew in distribution of schools that hire quant PhDs. More higher ranked bschools hire quant PhDs, so the avg salaries are naturally higher -
I think it's the same. Depends if the school is also giving flyouts. I had three phone interviews all were accepts, 3 fly outs with 3 accepts.

My understanding is that I'd you do OB in edu, it'll be in educational leadership/administration programs. These typically require some experience either teaching or in admin roles. Business PhDs almost never require any xp. The pay you end up with after an edu phd will be significantly lower (40-50% lower). My dad is a full prof in education, I expect to make more straight out of my marketing phd. Your qualifications are fine. You'll have to explain your interest in business applications in your sop, but that shouldn't be too much of a problem.
-
Both are fine, I have both and use both. The only thing is certain software may be only available in windows (SAS comes to mind). I have a desktop pc in the office to do the heavy lifting and carry a mbp for work outside the office. Many programs will provide you with a computer.
-
There are strategy programs that aren't OB/Econ based. If you are looking at marketing strategy, you should look at Journal of Marketing papers and find authors whose research is similar to your own interests. Then look at the programs at their school. Often times, there are program whose behavioral track allows you to do strategy work, even though the labeling is cb.
