  1. Hi, I currently have two options: I have a W in Operations Research (withdrew for multiple reasons). So I could retake this class, or choose to take Advanced Probability. Which option do you think I should take? (I wish I could take both but their lecture times overlap). It would be great if you could let me know what your thoughts are, and thanks!
  2. During one summer, I've done research at an institution that is not my home institution, and I took two econ electives while doing research there. Is it necessarily a bad sign that I took those electives not at my home institution? Thanks!
  3. Hi, I went to a ~top20 econ phd institution for undergrad. During most of the semesters when I had mix of econ/math + other courses, I had a lot of downs in terms of grades. But during the last three semesters, I showed improvement (at least that's what I think) - during the first of those three last semesters, I took the first sequence of real analysis, an econ elective, did the thesis, and the rest were random gen-ed courses. During the last two semesters, the courses were basically almost all math courses (4/5 math courses each semester) and these courses were all advanced courses. Thankfully I managed to pull up my grades straight As in the past three semesters. It also seems strange to me that my academic performance were much stronger when I stacked up my schedule with all the advanced/math courses (I guess the skills just built up overtime through struggles and they thankfully helped eventually), but would the admissions committee rather see this as something suspicious/bad? I would like to hear some opinions, thanks for the help! :)
  4. Hello, I was wondering if the admissions care about when math courses were taken - obviously, the calculus sequence are conceived widely to be taken first before most of other courses since they are pre-requisites for a lot of them, but do the admissions committee look for the order/sequence through which other courses were taken? (like linear algebra, real analysis, and so on). Thanks!
  5. Yeah that was my plan. And if I were to publish, I was planning on trying to at least have received the "revise and resubmit" before applying to PhD (and I thought that this will work favorably for me during the admissions process), but I read somewhere else that being in the process of publication or publication at anywhere doesn't add value in PhD admissions - is this true?
  6. Your point makes sense. But since I'm in the process of preparing myself for applying for phd programs, I would like it if the publication (if it ever happens at a decent journal) will have at least some value that will work favorably for me. Any other thoughts?
  7. I'm currently working on my senior thesis and my advisor finds my research worthy of publication. I plan on working for two years or so upon graduating, and so I might look into publishing during that time period. But I am aware that publishing before PhD is extremely difficult, but say that I managed to do so at a decent journal - will it be a significant factor (more than other factors) that will help me during the application process for top schools? I'm trying to see if it's even worth putting the efforts in publishing before PhD, as the majority of people say it's virtually impossible. Thanks!
  8. I have two B's in undergraduate econometrics courses, but I have an A in PhD econometricsI If possible, I plan on taking PhD econometricsII and also measure theory (math). How will the two B's in undergraduate econometrics courses be viewed if I get As in these courses as well? I would like to be competitive as much as possible for Top15 Econ PhD programs. (I'm from Top20-25 Econ PhD institution.) Thanks!
  9. I see, I will go for measure theory for now then. Would there be any way to make up for my grades in matrix algebra?
  10. Thanks for your input! Do you also think that grad linear algebra will be of no significance then? Was wondering which combination of courses will make me competitive for top schools
  11. My options are: grad linear algebra, measure theory, and graph theory. I want to apply to the top schools (20 and/or higher), which course do you think should I go for?
  12. Thanks for your input! Other thoughts, anyone?
  13. I'm currently an undergrad, and I have a quick question about taking grad linear algebra: Initially, I took a matrix theory/algebra class (which was called something like Matrix and Linear Transformations and so it covered some parts of linear transformations), and got a C initially, which I then retook and got a B. Later, I took a course that's actually called Linear Algebra (so this is the more legit linear algebra course & covers everything that was covered in matrix theory/algebra class + more linear algebra stuff & is mathematically rigorous, proof based), and got an A. I have an option to take grad linear algebra as an elective, and I was wondering what you guys think, given that even though I got an A in the Linear Algebra course, those bad grades in matrix algebra worry me. (I had some hard time with math in the beginning, but did better as I took harder courses: in fact, I got straight straight As the past three semesters in all math courses including: two sequences of Real Analysis, Topology, Stochastic Process, PDE and Fourier series, and so on.) I would like to be competitive for top schools (20 or higher), so let me know what your thoughts are, thanks for the help!
