ramP232 Posted June 24, 2004 Posted June 24, 2004 hi, this is my first post,... n a rather long one... :) but hope its useful. just gave my GMAT last morning... scored 720 :) (Q-48, V-42) I have given below the scores i obtained in the practice tests. I work in an MNC and on most occasions my days are quite long...10-14 hours... So i found it quite tough to balance both...moreover i started my preps quite late... But taking the last week off n to just think of GMAT n focussing on test strategies really helped...you need dedicated time to get in the groove. Practice Tests: 1. Powerprep1: 660 2. Powerprep2: 640 3. Powerprep3: 700 4. Kaplan1: 550! 5. Cambridge Review: 680 6. Kaplan2: 560 7. Peterson section tests (section tests are quite helpful. I would recommend that even after you start with your last leg of practice tests, you take a break for a day in between n concentrate on specific sections that you feel you need to improve on.) 8. Kaplan section tests 9. Powerprep: final practice test: 710 (the day before GMAT) From my GRE n TOEFL experience, i have found that the powerprep tests are closest to the real thing... n my final score has always been the score i got in my final powerprep practice test (which i took the day before the final) +/- 20 points. It helps you to know where you stand n also serves as a confidence booster. But i would like to add that the questions in the quant section in yesterday's test were particularly difficult. It was nothing like any of the quant sections i had attempted before. I have always found quant to be quite easy n fun but frankly was quite alarmed when i noticed the difficulty of every question yesterday. So i would suggest that one solves different kinds of problems of varying difficulty...just to get more comfortable so that in case you are faced with a situation where the difficulty level is higher than expected you wouldnt be too perturbed. GOOD LUCK TO ALL! ---RamP. Quote
post2ashish Posted August 10, 2004 Posted August 10, 2004 Hi guys, i'm facing a problem.. could some one help... When i'm practicing [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip], i find tht i'm able to answer all the Qs in an RC with reasonable time (avg 2 mins or less per Q) but during a Comp-Test, somehow i'm unable to comprehend the RC in one go... & i have to read it again (if not full than a part of it) after reading each Q & before answering it... [any strategy how to avoid this] I have my GMAT scheduled on 24th Aug. Let me share my practice scores... Took the PP1 & kaplan diagnostic during the weekend... startling revelations... got 690 in PP1 (after i have completed the SC part on OG) & 640 in kaplan diagonistic... Before the test i was not at all confident abt my performance in SC but to my astonishment, In both the tests i cud not perform upto the mark in RC & CR whereas i did pretty well in SC.... Also, i'm not able to complete the test in verbal section in due time... in both the tests i could complete only 35-36 Qs before the time ran out... if i can save some time & actually attempt these Qs, i'm sure my score will go up by ~30 points... [could someone share some time saving techs] seems i have worked a lot on SC & now need to work on CR & RC for-a-while ashish Quote
arisnb Posted August 10, 2004 Posted August 10, 2004 Hi everyone, I've got a question. How to do convert the 800 score test into Gmat score. I got percentile of both math and verbal but can't seem to find the calculator to convert it. Thanks. Quote

Frankie Satin Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 Kaplan 1 (1999 version) - 530 Kaplan 2 (1999 version) - 570 (I couldn't finish either sections in time...actually left about 8-10 questions blank) Princeton (free one online)- 700 800Score test 2 (paid $29.99 for it) - 780 (the math part is a waste of time. I got a 58 on the math and it took less than 50 minutes to finish...do not recommend) PowerPrep 1 - 740 Actual GMAT - 690 (and still a little bitter but getting over it) just a warning in case you didn't see it in the other threads. The math part on the actual GMAT was much harder than expected. I think to best prepare for the GMAT now is to get the most recent [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip]. The old ones may give a false sense of security. Quote
Soummo1998 Posted September 18, 2004 Posted September 18, 2004 I was wondering whether someone could give me some insight as far as how you were scoring in the practice questions in the [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] prior to taking your actual GMAT. I'm taking the GMAT in a week's time and am scoring about 7 out of 10 on the SC under timed conditions and about 8 to 8.5 out of 10 on RC and CR. On Verbal, I generally can score about 9 out of 10 on PS and 8 out of 10 on DS. Just wondering if one really needs to be in the 9 out of 10 average for all question categories to be able to score above 700 on the GMAT. Thanks in advance for your time to answer my question and offer any other advice that you may have based on your experience. Quote

I3aron Posted October 3, 2004 Posted October 3, 2004 I am a little relieved when I see most people's Kaplan scores are 60-100 points below their actual GMAT. Can't tell how frustrated I was after taking the first Kaplan CAT -- didn't finish all the questions and got 640. Got a little better in the next two Kaplan tests -- 680 and 710. But I suspect Kaplan gradually lowers the difficulty level in subsequent tests to artificially boast the scores, not sure if anyone else has the same feeling. :) I scored on two Powerprep tests 710 and 750. Will take GMAT on Columbus day and let you guys know my score. Quote

I will take it again though. The only resource I haven't exhausted is the Official Guide which people seem to think is a good resource on this site. Knew my verbal would be kind of low and usually my math score makes up for it, but I found the math on the real GMAT harder than I was expecting. Quote

Very unnerving experience. This forum has been very useful and has helped me strive towards 700 plus scores. This is an actual question from the exam. It took me by surprise as there were alot of steps involved and I didn't understand what was required at first. After the exam I thought about it and figured it out. (Not exact wording. Exact wording was more complicated) There exists a cylinder with radius of 5 and height of 25. What is the ratio of the area of the two face of of the cylinder to it's entire surface area? Answer: 25pi+25pi/250pi+50pi =50pi/300pi =1/6 I almost cancelled my score but learned that it is very difficult to tell where you stand and the only time you should ever cancel is if you miss more than 4 or five questions. I am very disappointed with the verbal score. In my panic after the quant section I forgot that there were 41 q's and not 37 on the verbal. I took 6 minutes on #37 thinking it was my last question and then realized that I had four questions to go and 2 minutes left. Had to guess at all four. Probably would have cracked 700 otherwise. I am applying to Canadian universities and the average gmat scores are 625-640 for our best schools. I don't think I need to rewrite. Piece of advice think of it as a contest and challenge yourself against all the smart mothers who post their 700+ scores on this forum. Peace and good luck. Erin I'd like to thank you fro starting this forum, it helped me challenge myself. Quote
steve_shekhar Posted October 24, 2004 Posted October 24, 2004 DEMON, I have GMAT on 9th oct. i fared very bad in KAP test just 590...though i realised that i cud do better with little caution. can u gimmie some advise based upon ur experience? how close was the test to OG? and to KAP. some where in between? if [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] is 10 and KAP is 15 where is ACTUAL GMAT? 12.5??? Steve. Quote
DEMON Posted October 27, 2004 Posted October 27, 2004 Steve, With a 590 on Kap you'll score high 600's if you can handle the pressure whilst writing this torturous exam. The admissions council seems to be testing your ability to perform under the gun. I think that Kaplan makes there tests considerably harder than the actual exam to motivate students to study. The [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] is good practice and helps you learn the necessary concepts, however I caution you NOT to rely on the actual exam to be anywhere near as easy as the GMAT. My advice.... I think half the battle is learning the scoring algorithim that GMAC uses and then adjusting your strategy accordingly. Also make sure that you take at least 12-15 practice exams. Try the Princeton and Arco Gold exams, they'lll help to build your confidence and give an excellent indication of where you stand. Peace out and good luck... PS. Don't freaking run out of time and make the stupid ass mistake I made on the verbal section. Quote

Tatu Posted November 29, 2004 Posted November 29, 2004 Hi Guys My name is Tatu and i am a software consultant working for Accenture in Bangalore India.I need your(all) suggestion on ideally how much you need to prepare for GMAT.(in HRS or weeks). I have been preparing for past 10 weeks with almost 24 hrs a week. But still iam not able to score more than 620 on my practice tests. I took kaplan(540)..ETS(620). So do you Guys think that i should take some more time and take all the tests.Iam targetting score around 700-720.My weakness is RC and DS. Quote
mahaveloramaro Posted November 30, 2004 Posted November 30, 2004 Hello y'all: thanks for the many advices. I want to make you aware of an undocumented feature of GMAT test. I took the AWA without problem. I had 5 minutes break between the AWA and the Quant. I took the Quant. without problem. Went for another 5 minutes break. Because the test site was over crowded, I have had to stay in line to wait for my turn to use a uni-sex bathroom...so my break became about 15 to 20 minutes. When I went back to resume the test at the Verbal section, I had like 50 minutes only! It appears as if the computer computed all breaks against my time. Result: Q=40; V=23; GMAT=590. Has this happened to anyone else? If I were not taking a break at all, would the computer add 10 minutes (2 times 5 minutes) to my overall GMAT time? In which section would the time be added: verbal I assume? Thanks for giving your opinion on this. M. Rama Ro Quote
