  1. How do you think of writing math equations in SOP? Not deriving anything, but simply stating the main models of my research topics.
  2. Thank you so much for your comment. It really helped me a lot!
  3. Hi guys, I just received letter grades for this semester and it's somewhat frustrating. Judging from the previous thread, it seems that a B for Real Analysis is quite critical, and it also happened to me... What makes problems worse is that it is not the only B. Could you guys give me some advice on what to do? Would taking grad math courses help? (yes, I am the one who recently posted a thread about taking grad math courses, but this time with a more critical issue...) Below is a detailed look on my math/stat courses taken: Calculus I,II (A,A), Linear Algebra I,II (A,A+), Analysis I,II (baby rudin; A,A), Intro to Probability (A), Mathematical Statistics (A), Differential Equations (B+), Numerical Analysis (B+), Stochastic Processes (A+), Applied Math (A+), Topology I (A), Real Analysis (Lebesgue measure; B+) That B+ for Real Analysis really breaks my heart...
  4. Thank you! I will try consulting the faculty after I get in. Hope you have a great day :)
  5. Hi, I'm an Asian (non-Chinese) looking forward to applying for Finance PhD in around 2022. I have concerns regarding taking grad math courses. Would taking grad Probability (measure-based prob) and grad Real Analysis (Hilbert Space) be of any help in the application process? The concern is due to my sub-optimal grades. Please see my profile below for your reference. I'm also open to Econ PhDs. Test Scores: (GRE) 170/163/5.0 (Q/V/W) Undegrad GPA: CGPA: 4.0/4.5 (3.7/4.0 if A+,A=4.0, B+,B=3.0, etc.) from a regionally well-known Asian university, Econ major. Econ Classes (advanced): Econometrics II (time series), Empirical Analysis of Policies (DiD, Matching, etc.), Game Theory, Intermediate Metrics (IV, Probit, etc.) Math&Stats Classes: Calc I,II (II being multivariate), Lin Alg I,II, Analysis I,II, ODE, Probability, Mathematical Statistics, Stochastic Processes, Numerical Analysis; the following are being taken this semester: Topology I, Real Analysis (measure), Applied Math (deep learning). Mostly A+ or As, except for the following: Game Theory (B+), Industrial Org (B), ODE (B+), Numerical Analysis (B+) Research Experience: A few undergrad-level papers, but none significant. Work Experience: 6m intern at an Asian global IB (Research) 3m intern at a major global IB (Risk) Others: I will be enrolled in MA Econ from the same University starting next semester. I have a high chance of getting TA-ships and RA-ships, which could hopefully boost my chances. Concerns: Gauging from the above profile, would taking grad math courses help my application? (I am pretty confident I can get A's) Also, what else could I do besides writing good papers in my Masters? What would be the most probable target schools that I can aim for? Thank you in advance.
  6. Thank you for your guidance. I will try to get advice from the Business PhD thread.
  7. Thanks! Maybe I should take them :)
  8. Not my primary research interest, but yes, especially social network theory.
  9. Well, actually I am going to attend Econ Masters from next semester, so grad micro and metrics courses would have been taken by the time I apply for Phd. I was just wondering if some advanced math courses would provide any benefit in the application process. (Since my undergrad GPA is not as optimal: around 3.7/4.0 US standard)
  10. I am a final year undergrad student looking forward to applying for PhD probably in 2022. I was wondering if taking grad math courses (grad Real Analysis - Hilbert space, grad Probability - measure based prob theory) would enhance my chances. I have taken most of the relevant math courses (analysis, real analysis, topology, stochastic processes, etc) and I think I would most probably get at least A's from the grad courses as well. If so, should I take them, or would it be a waste of time? Always thank you for great advice (btw, I am looking forward to studying financial economics)
  11. Thank you guys :) It helped me a lot!
  12. Hi, I just took a GRE exam today, and received a score of 170/163 (quant/verbal). I'm expecting writing score of 4.0-4.5. I was wondering if raising the verbal score would be of any benefit. (btw I'm from an Asian country, so I thought maybe high verbal scores could show my linguistic ability)
  13. Regarding Finance Phd, I've seen top 50-ish placements directly from BA or MA here. The ones who took Masters from top US schools have placed in some decent schools in US and UK. Anyways thank you for your advice! (and sorry for the late reply)
  14. Is it possible to enter finance job market from Econ Phd?
  15. Non-US Univ ranked Top 2 in Korea Major: Econ ; Minor: Math GPA : 3.95/4.5 Major : 4.1/4.5 Relevant Coursework: Econometrics I,II Macroeconomics Dynamics, Game Theory, Financial economics Analysis I,II, Topology I, Mathematical Statistics, Probability, Calculus I,II, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra I,II Work Exp.: 6 months at an Asian global IB (Equity Research) 3 months at one of the major BBs (Credit Risk) Research Exp.: One paper (undergrad level) on derivatives One paper (undergrad level) on exchange rates Recom. Letters: 2-3 good ones ready from econ profs, and planning one extra from industry personnel. How do you guys think would work out? I heard Phd Finance is a bit different from econ. How should I prepare?
  16. yup calc 2 is multivariate calc. in my univ. thanks!
  17. Is it worth investing one more year to have a math degree? I am currently an economics major + math minor. I will be taking most of the relevant math courses (calc12, lin alg 12, ode, pde, analysis12, real anal, num anal, topol12, etc.). However if I invest one more year and take those less important math courses (algeb12, appliedmath, complex anal, geometric calculus, etc.) I can receive a B.S. in mathematics as well. Would it be worth it to put in my time and money into getting a double degree in econ and math? or is just a minor in math enough?
  18. Well.... I am not so sure about applying directly to phd program. Your GPA is not enough considering you are not from the top 3 Korean institutes. Even for the top-3 institutes that GPA is a bit weak. The promising point though is that your final year GPA is quite good, and you did well in UT Austin. You can try applying to the unis that accept last 2 years GPA. But even considering that, I am very worried about not seeing any, not even elementary proof courses in your profile. The best choice for you in my opinion is to go to top3 econ MAs in Korea, which is what most Koreans do, and take the relevent math courses needed. Elementary proofs and real analysis is a must. Considering even those who top their undergrad programs and got econ RA opportunities from their junior years apply to econ MAs first,I believe it's your best option as well.
  19. Thank you for your reply!! May I ask what other theory applicants do for their profiles? Are there people doing "theory" RAs during undergrad studies? Thank you.
  20. Finished Junior studies. Planning 1.5 more years in undergrad. 2 more years in grad. I am wondering what I can do to prepare for phd right now. Type of Undergrad: Top 2 Economics program in Korea, Top 100 world wide (US News, by subject) GPA: 3.9/4.5 (3.7/4.0 where A,A+:4, B,B+:3, etc.) ; math&econ: 4.2/4.5 Type of Grad: N/A GRE: N/A, TOEFL: 110 (sp. 27, wr. 28) Math courses taken (undergrad): Calc I,II (A,A+ ; Calc II = mutivariate), Linear Algebra (A,A+) Planning to take Analysis I,II, Real Analysis, Topology I, Diff. Eq., Partial Diff. Eq., Intro to Probab., Mathematical Statistics, Stochastic Process, Topics in Applied Math Econ courses taken: Principles of Econ I,II (A+,A+), Micro (A), Macro (A; retaken), Math for Econ (A), Stat for Econ (A+), Econometrics I,II (A+,A ; metrics II = time series metrics), International Finance (A), International Trade (A+), Financial Econ (A+), Strategy and Information Econ (B+), Empirical Micro (A+) Planning to take Industrial Organization, Indus.Org. Seminar, Empirical Analysis of Econ Policies, Mathematical Economics, grad micro, grad macro Other Courses: Statistical Inquiry (B+), Formal logics (A), bunch of other philosophy & law courses Recommendation Letters: 1 from Metrics professor who knows me well. 2 others not yet decided. Research Experience: 1 paper on International Finance (exch. rate) with 5 other undergrads. Presented at an undergrad conference. 1 paper on Finance (derivatives) with another undergrad. Will be presented at undergrad conference. 1 funded independent research on Micro Theory. Ongoing. I know all three are not much of a signal. Research Interest: Primary - micro theory, secondary - finance Concern: What can I do for now to get ready for theory application? I heard a rigorous math course work is a prerequisite for theory work, so I'm planning to take a lot of math courses in the following semesters. What else can I do to improve my profile? Would taking an RA job at a Korean research institute help as a theory applicant? (most of the work will be on empirical studies). I'm confident of my mathematical potential, so I would like some advice assuming my future math scores converge to A's.
