  1. Hi, This website and its people has been so helpful during the admissions process. As I am just months before starting my PhD, is there any advice or tips that I should know in preparing for my study in the first year (passing prelims, etc)? Thanks
  2. I am interested in applied micro. My research experience has been all in development economics. Nonetheless, I know that my interest my change. UMD AREC offer me 4 years of guaranteed funding (I don't know how easy it is to get year 5 and 6 funding if I need it, although a professor told me that students usually get RA position or get employment in many agencies in DC). The connection to the DC organizations such as WB and IMF is great. It's also located in DC (city life), although the stipend is the same as Notre Dame. The placements are of course greater than ND, although I have heard from EJMR that the department is not a pleasant place (I take this with a grain of salt though, if anyone have more insights into this that would be appreciated). With ND, the funding situation is great as I am guaranteed for 5 years of funding. The department is on a fast upward trajectory from hiring like crazy with good faculty members across the applied micro field, which would give me more options in case I change my field. The department is also very collegial, with close interactions between faculty members and student. That said, the placement aren't as great as UMD AREC for academic positions. South Bend is also not inspiring as a city. Currently, I am indifferent between academic positions or private sector. Any advice would be very much appreciated ! Thanks guys
  3. Should it be important at all? I assume that I won't spend much time outdoors since I will barely have any free time.
  4. I was the one who posted on GC. I didn't get any email whatsoever. Checked the website myself.
  5. I didn't receive anything from UCSD, another implicit rejection...
  6. I spent my first 2 years as an undergrad in Santa Barbara. If you love parties, man there is no better college to be in than UCSB haha.
  7. Can anybody confirm Berkeley acceptance on GC?
  8. Hey guys, I have been lurking on this forum for a while. On another thread that I made, I am deciding between UIUC and Notre Dame with stronger preference towards notre dame for now. I know that UIUC is ranked higher currently, and Notre Dame's department is pretty young. However, their recent placement is really good relative to their ranking. Moreover, I have heard great things about the attention that graduate students get from the faculty members given their small class size. Furthermore, they are a very ambitious department with a lot of hiring in recent years. The department seems to be very very committed in improving the program and it seems to have succeeded in recent years. @startz, What is your opinion on this? Which one do you think I should take? Thank you.
  9. Does anyone ever call the department to ask when the admission results would be released?
  10. Thanks for your reply. I slightly lean towards Notre Dame right now because of how its department has been so serious in improving its reputation (they hired lots of faculty members in recent years).
  11. I am lucky enough to be accepted to both programs. However, I am confused as to which one I should choose. I am going to visit both departments in the near future. However, I would really appreciate if you or your friends could who go to one of these schools can give me some insights into each respective department. I know that rank-wise, UIUC is higher. However, ND's close tie between students and faculty members intrigued me as well.
  12. Hello, that uiuc post is me. I hope you'll get admitted soon.
  13. Has anybody received anything from UT austin? I have seen some acceptances on GC.
  14. Your decision will show up in one business day. Mine were like that too.
  15. Well, Berkeley Phd Admission website says that the applicants they usually recommend for admission has a Q above 163.
  16. Hey, I received a personalized email from the department, and received an official email from graduate school around a week later. I submitted the application on January 2nd if I remember correctly. I hope you get your decision soon !
